HFCL Ltd (HFCL) on Monday said it has secured a Rs 1,127 crore order from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) aimed at transforming the Optical Transport Network (OTN) infrastructure across the state-owned telco's pan India network. HFCL's comprehensive network upgrade will not only cater to the requirements of enterprise and FTTH/broadband services but also position BSNL for the future with the seamless launch of 4G services and the anticipation of 5G services in the coming years. HFCL, in a release, said it has secured Rs 1,127 crore order to transform BSNL's Optical Transport Network. State-run C-DoT is expecting to deploy indigenously developed 5G telecom gears in the BSNL network in the next 6-8 months, a senior company official said. Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) CEO Rajkumar Upadhyay told PTI that the company has indigenously developed the entire 5G network comprising 5G standalone (SA) radio, core and IP Multimedia System in collaboration with startup Wisig and VVDN Technologies. C-DoT demonstrated the test network set-up using its 5G gears in a live video call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the India Mobile Congress 2023. "We have already deployed 4G and 5G non-standalone core in the Punjab circle of BSNL and are being gradually scaled up to pan-India level. State-owned telecom firm BSNL is planning to launch 4G service in December at a small scale and then roll it out across the country by June next year, Chairman and Managing Director P K Purwar said on Saturday. Speaking to PTI at the India Mobile Congress, Purwar said that the company plans to upgrade 4G service to 5G after June. "BSNL 4G service is ready for launch in Punjab in December. We have already done the hardening required for a network with 200 sites. We are in the process of installing 3,000 sites in Punjab," Purwar said. He said that BSNL will gradually increase network deployment to 6,000 and then to 9,000, 12,000 and 15,000 sites per month. "Our target is to complete 4G roll-out by June 2024. Post June 2024, we will be moving to 5G services," Purwar said. Loss-making state-run telecom firms BSNL and MTNL have signed a memorandum of understanding that will pave the way for synergy of operations between them, MTNL said in a regulatory filing. BSNL has already taken over mobile service operations from MTNL. "We would like to inform you that MTNL has inked a MoU with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited on Thursday, August 31, 2023," MTNL said. The government has in the last four years approved Rs 3,23,047 crore financial support for the revival of the public sector telecom firms and an additional Rs 1.39 lakh crore BharatNet project which is handled by Bharat Broadband Network Limited. Government-owned telecom service providers MTNL and BSNL have seen a decline in the number of subscribers in the past three years because of "stiff competition" in the sector as well as lack of 4G services on a full scale, Parliament was informed on Wednesday. Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan in a written reply to the Lok Sabha said following a financial relief package from the Centre, BSNL and MTNL have been operationally profitable since 2020-21. "The reasons for decline in subscribers are lack of 4G services on a full scale and stiff competition in the telecom sector. In line with Atmanirbhar initiative of the government, BSNL has issued purchase orders for one lakh sites to roll out 4G services all over India in the next 18-24 months," Chauhan said. IT company L&T Technology Services on Monday said it has partnered with state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for the deployment of private 5G network for enterprise customers. According to the agreement framework signed by both companies, the spectrum will be provided by BSNL using both PLMN (public land mobile network) and isolated allotment. L&T Technology Services (LTTS) will anchor the private network requirements by deploying equipment, applications, servers, technology and software, and core for the integration of devices and sensors within the customer's ecosystem, the IT firm said in a statement. "This partnership marks LTTS' foray into the 5G private network space, with LTTS assuming the role of a master system integrator for customers, offering choice of technologies, equipment and use case buildout, while BSNL will be the official network provider," the statement said.
