SIAM pushes for enhanced alternative fuels penetration amid focus on electric vehicles

Automobile industry body SIAM has proposed making petrol-powered two-wheelers and passenger vehicles material compatible with 10 per cent ethanol (E10) and 3 per cent methanol (M3) blends by 2025. In a white paper on 'Alternative Fuels for Vehicles' released recently, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) also said that by 2030, the auto industry could make specific vehicles compatible with 20 per cent ethanol (E20)-blended gasoline depending upon sustained availability of fuels with separately labelled dispensing at fuel stations. While electrification of fleet will be a major help towards providing energy security and improving environment, SIAM said that "India needs to work on other efforts, to not only complement this effort, considering the ultimate objective of improving India's energy security". With a requisite policy push and infrastructure development, to be done as an enabler of fuel diversification effort by the government, the automotive industry aims to .

Consumer appliance makers seek lower GST on large-screen TVs, air-conditioners, refrigerators

Consumer electronic goods makers have sought lowering the GST rate to 12 per cent on appliances like large-screen televisions, air-conditioners and refrigerators, in their Budget wish list to the government. The consumer durables industry is of the view that these items are now household necessities and do not come under the luxury goods category anymore. Companies such as Sony India and Panasonic feel that there is a need to boost demand in the consumer appliances sector and lower taxes can help manufacturers pass on the benefits to buyers. Besides, these firms are seeking exemption of basic customs duty on imported TV panels that are assembled here in India to give a necessary push to the market. "I am really hoping that the government does something. It is in our wish list," Sony India Managing Director Sunil Nayyar told PTI when asked if the company was hopeful of reduced GST rates on big-screen television sets. He further said that lower GST rates will ultimately help the ...

Bogus IGST refund claims: Govt to verify exporters' claims before sanctioning

With the government detecting fraudulent refund claims by exporters, the CBIC has asked customs and GST officers to closely verify the IGST refund claims before sanctioning them. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has also asked director-general (systems) to identify a list of "risky exporters" and share it with customs and GST officers, so that an alert can be generated for 100 per cent examination of their export consignments. Currently, Integrated GST (IGST) refunds are issued to exporters automatically based on shipping bills filed with customs and goods and services tax returns filed with central tax authorities. The refunds are issued within a fortnight days of filing of returns without any manual intervention. Tax experts said the move to verify the refund claims would delay the process of refund issuances to exporters. In a letter to field offices, the CBIC said it has observed instances of availment of IGST refund using fraudulent input tax credit (ITC) ...
