A prominent Canadian MP of Indian origin has voiced concern over attacks on journalists who report on Khalistani extremism in Canada and asked the authorities to deal with the situation with an iron hand "before it is too late". "I am very concerned by attacks on journalists who report on Khalistani extremism in Canada," Chandra Arya, a Member of Parliament from Nepean in the House of Commons, said while addressing the parliament on Friday. Citing attacks on Rishi Nagar of Red FM Calgary a few days, he said that there are many more attacks in Greater Toronto Area and across Canada by Khalistani extremists. "I call on law enforcement agencies to take notice of Khalistani extremism with all seriousness it deserves. It has to be dealt with an iron hand before it is too late," he said. He recalled that in March 2023, Sameer Kaushal of Radio AM600 was assaulted for covering a Khalistan protest. In February 2022, Brampton radio host Deepak Punj was attacked in his studio for criticising
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Justine Trudeau met on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Laos, almost a year after his Canadian counterpart accused India of involvement in the death of a Canadian Khalistani separatist. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC News) said Trudeau described the meeting as a brief exchange when the two leaders met during the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Vientiane, Laos held on Thursday. "I emphasised that there is work that we need to do," the CBC News quoted Trudeau as saying. "I won't go into details about what we talked about but what I've said many times is that the safety of Canadians and upholding the rule of law is one of the fundamental responsibilities of any Canadian government and that's what I'll stay focused on, Trudeau told a press conference at Vientiane. The ties between India and Canada were strained last year after Trudeau's allegations in September of a potential involvement of Indian agents in Hard

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday he's focused on the work ahead after the ruling Liberals lost in another by-election, raising more questions about his ability to lead the party into the next federal election. For the second time in recent months the Liberals lost in a former stronghold when the Bloc Quebecois won the vote in the electoral district of LaSalle-Emard-Verdun Monday in Montreal in a tight three-way race with the New Democratic Party. Obviously it would have been nicer to be able to win . . . but there's more work to do, Trudeau said in Ottawa. The big thing is to make sure that Canadians understand the choice they get to make in the next election," Trudeau said. "That's the work we're going to continue to do. Election Canada results show the Bloc candidate Louis-Philippe Sauve finished with 28% of the vote. Liberals' candidate Laura Palestini collected 27.2% and finished just 248 votes behind the winner. The NDP collected 26.1% and was about 600 vote

Canada's largest airline and business leaders on Thursday urged the federal government to intervene in labour talks with its pilots in hopes of avoiding a shutdown, but the labour minister said the two sides should negotiate a deal. Air Canada spokesman Christophe Hennebelle said that the airline is committed to negotiations, but it faces wage demands from the Air Line Pilots Association it can't meet. The issue is that we are faced with unreasonable wage demands that ALPA refuses to moderate, he said. The union representing 5,200 pilots says Air Canada continues to post record profits while expecting pilots to accept below-market compensation. The airline and its pilots have been in contract talks for more than a year. The pilots want to be paid wages competitive with their U.S. counterparts. The two sides will be in a position starting Sunday to issue a 72-hour notice of a strike or lockout. The airline has said the notice would trigger its three-day wind down plan and start the

Canadian Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said Wednesday his party plans to put forward a no-confidence motion at the earliest possible opportunity in hopes of bringing down Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government. Poilievre called on New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh to support the motion and trigger an election. Will Jagmeet Singh sell out Canadians again? Poilievre said at a news conference in Ottawa. It's put up or shut up time for the NDP. Singh refused to say if his party would support the Conservatives. I've said on any vote we will look at the vote and we'll make our decision, Singh said during a party caucus meeting in Montreal. We'll make a determination of what is in the best interests of Canadians. Unlike Pierre Poilievre who wants to play games, we actually want to get things done for Canadians. Singh shrugged off Poilievre's demand for an answer before two byelections Monday. I say directly to Pierre Poilievre I'm not going to listen to you, s
