Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said the Chennai-Bengaluru greenfield expressway was likely to be completed by December this year. Responding to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha, Gadkari urged the governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to help the National Highway Authority of India in making available construction material such as aggregates and fly ash for the projects in the respective states. "I am giving confidence to the House ... that we are trying our level best to complete the highway before December. The distance between Chennai and Bengaluru can be covered within two hours," the minister said. Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) an initiative by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), has launched ticketing services for passengers traveling on the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd in the city. Chennai Metro Rail has become the first metro service to be available on the ONDC Network. Following the launch of the service in Chennai, ONDC in a statement here said, the Kochi Metro, Kanpur Metro, Pune Metro, and other metro rail services are poised to join the network. Passengers travelling on the Chennai Metro Rail can purchase 'single' or 'return' journey tickets through the applications -- 'Rapido', 'Namma Yatri', 'redBus' which are currently available on the ONDC network. Digital payment brand Paytm, owned by One97 Communications, has launched FASTag payments for customers opting to park their vehicles at the Chennai International Airport. Over seven years after an IAF AN-32 aircraft went missing in 2016, scientists at the Chennai-based National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) stumbled upon its debris when they were testing the instruments of their newly-acquired autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for seabed mapping in December. It was during such a testing expedition undertaken by Research Vessel Sagar Nidhi on December 9-10 last year, about 310 km off the Chennai coast, the instruments on the AUV picked up some strong SONAR reflections from the seabed at a depth of 3,400 m. The strong signals intrigued the scientists who then decided to dive deeper for a closer look. Chennai has achieved an all-time high demand for office space in 2023 calendar year at 10 million square feet on better demand from corporates, according to CBRE. Real estate consultant CBRE on Thursday said that the leasing of office space in Chennai grew 61 per cent to 10 million square feet in 2023 as against 6.2 million square feet in the previous year. Overall, the office market across nine major cities witnessed a gross absorption of 61.6 million square feet during 2023, registering a growth of 7 per cent from 57.8 million square feet in the previous year. This marked a 4-year high leasing activity after it touched the peak in 2019 with 65 million square feet.
