China 'opposes' US recognition of Arunachal as part of Indian territory

China on Thursday said it firmly opposes the US recognition of Arunachal Pradesh as part of Indian territory and affirmed that Washington has nothing to do with the India-China border dispute. It also accused the US of instigating and using other countries' disputes for selfish geopolitical interests. China's strong reaction came hours after US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel's remarks that the United States recognises Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory. Patel also said, We (the US) strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to advance territorial claims by incursions or encroachments, military or civilian, across the Line of Actual Control. China strongly deplores and firmly opposes this, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a media briefing while replying to a question posed by the official Chinese media. The delimitation of the China-India boundary has not been completed, Lin said adding, Zangnan' (the official Chinese name for Arunachal

China to launch 'intl manhunt' to target officials involved in graft in BRI

China plans to launch an "international manhunt" to target fugitive officials allegedly involved in corruption in the country's ambitious decade-old multi-billion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a media report here said Wednesday. The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the ruling Communist Party of China's anti-corruption watchdog, made the call in a meeting on Tuesday with multiple agencies involved in the cross-border corruption hunt, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported. "[We] must strengthen the integrity of building the Belt and Road Initiative and reinforce the high-pressure stance against corruption to provide strong support and a firm guarantee for winning the tough and protracted battle against corruption, the CCDI said, the Post reported quoting the party-run People's Daily. This is the second report in as many months highlighting CCDI's plan to clean up the BRI projects. Last month, the CCDI's annual report said that fighting ...

Foreign research ships allowed for replenishment after Chinese protest: SL

Sri Lanka has said it will allow foreign offshore research ships for replenishments at its ports despite a one-year ban on such vessels, a senior official has said after China protested to Colombo for allowing a German survey ship but turning down Beijing's similar request. This is the first time Sri Lanka has officially admitted that foreign research vessels will be allowed for replenishments since President Ranil Wickremesinghe's government imposed a one-year ban on offshore research vessels in December last year after strong security concerns raised by India and the US following the visit of two Chinese high-tech research vessels in 14 months. "The ban on foreign ships is for research purposes, not on replenishment," the Economy Next portal quoted Niluka Kadurugamuwa, Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, as saying. There was a German research vessel recently for replenishment and Sri Lanka allowed it, he said. Chinese Embassy in Colombo has raised strong protest against the m

Doing biz in China growing tougher, more uncertain: European business group

Uncertainty and draconian regulations have drastically raised risks for foreign businesses in China, a report by a European business group said on Wednesday. The lengthy paper by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China urges China's leaders to do more to address concerns that it says have grown exponentially in recent years. This report comes at a time when the global business environment is becoming increasingly politicised, and companies are having to make some very tough decisions about how, or in some cases if, they can continue to engage with the Chinese market, it says. The study, compiled by the chamber and the China Macro Group consultancy, echoes concerns that have been raised by European and American companies operating in China. Foreign investment fell 8 per cent last year from a year earlier as companies recalibrated their commitments in the world's second largest economy. EU Chamber officials said China's changing business environment partly reflects moves by .

China's stock watchdog fines Evergrande, slaps lifetime ban on its chairman

Troubled property developer China Evergrande Group says Beijing's stock watchdog has fined it 4.2 billion yuan ($333.4 million) for allegedly falsifying its revenue, among other violations, as it conducts a deep clean of the troubled financial sector. The company said in a release to mainland Chinese stock exchanges late Monday that its chairman, Hui Ka Yan, was fined 47 million yuan ($6.5 million) and banned from China's markets for life. Hui, also known as Xu Jiayin, was detained by authorities in September for suspected illegal crimes. The notice cited a preliminary ruling by the China Securities Regulatory Commission, which recently got a new chief, Wu Qing, an industry veteran with a reputation for being tough on market misbehavior. Evergrande is the world's most indebted property developer, with more than $300 billion in debts. It is among dozens of Chinese companies that have collapsed since 2020 under official pressure to rein in excessive borrowing that the ruling Communist

Chinese billionaire admits to election crimes, making bogus donations

A Chinese billionaire has pleaded guilty to federal election crimes, admitting that he made thousands of dollars in contributions to New York and Rhode Island political candidates in the names of others. Hui Qin, a Chinese cinema magnate, faces up to 27 years in prison on charges that include orchestrating a straw donor scheme, immigration fraud and using false identification documents. Beginning in December 2021, Qin began working "to find individuals to make more than USD 10,000 in straw donor contributions" to an unnamed candidate running for citywide election in New York City, prosecutors said. At least one individual donated USD 1,000 on Qin's behalf to the citywide candidate. The following day, Qin reached out to a co-conspirator, who told him they expected to be able to obtain up to USD 20,000 in straw donor contributions for the candidate. Prosecutors also say he engaged in similar straw donor schemes to funnel donations to a US representative in New York and a congressiona

China's EAM Wang Yi meets New Zealand counterpart to begin diplomatic tour

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his New Zealand counterpart Monday, as China's most senior diplomat began a tour of the country and Australia. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters greeted Wang in Wellington, New Zealand's capital. There have been some significant developments since we last met, not least a global pandemic that impacted both our countries," Peters said in his opening comments of their formal meeting at New Zealand's parliament house. Today is a valuable opportunity to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that are now before us. Wang is the highest-ranking Chinese politician to visit the country since his own previous visit in 2017. New Zealand has had strong economic ties with China in recent years, and was the first developed country to sign a bilateral free trade deal with Beijing in 2008. While in Wellington, Wang will also have brief meetings with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Trade Minister Todd McClay. China look
