China imposes retaliatory tariffs on import of Canadian farm, food products

China on Saturday announced retaliatory tariffs on some Canadian farm and food imports, after Canada imposed duties in October on Chinese-made electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products. The new duties become effective March 20, according to a statement by the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council. Additional 100% tariffs will be imposed on Canadian rapeseed oil, oil cakes and peas, and additional 25% tariffs will apply to pork and aquatic products. The tariffs add to global trade tensions already high, with rounds of tariff announcements by the United States, China, Canada and Mexico. The duties come in retaliation for Ottawa imposing tariffs against Chinese imports in October, including a 100% surtax on all Chinese-made EVs and 25% on steel and aluminum imports. Despite China's repeated opposition and dissuasion, Canada has taken unilateral restrictive measures on electric vehicles, steel, aluminum and other products imported from China without investigation, ...

China's exports, imports weaken in Jan-Feb as demand slides amid trade war

China's exports rose a less-than-expected 2.3% in January and February from a year earlier while imports fell more than 8% in a slow start to a year dogged by uncertainty over US tariffs and other policies. Economists had forecast that exports would rise 5% year-on-year and that imports would edge higher. China's overall trade surplus grew to $170.52 billion in the first two months of the year. China's customs agency typically publishes combined trade data for January and February to avoid any distortion from slowdowns during the week-long Lunar New Year holidays. Export growth cooled over the first two months of 2025, with tariff front-running providing less of a boost to demand than we had anticipated, said Julian Evans-Pritchard of Capital Economics. This slowdown comes before any substantial hit from tariffs, which will almost certainly lead to sharp falls in shipments to the US before long, he said. Evans-Pritchard said that the slowdown in imports suggests that the pick up i

China keeps growth target at around 5% for 2025 amid US trade war risks

China is keeping its economic growth target at around 5% for 2025 despite a looming trade war with the United States and other headwinds. The target for GDP growth was announced Wednesday in a report being presented by Premier Li Qiang at the opening session of the National People's Congress, the annual meeting of China's legislature. It gives an indication of how ambitious the government is about boosting growth in challenging economic times. The IMF has projected China's economy will grow 4.6% this year, down from 5% in 2024, according to Chinese government statistics. A target of around 5% is well aligned with our mid- and long-term development goals and underscores our resolve to meet difficulties head-on and strive hard to deliver, the government report said. Across-the-board tariffs imposed on Chinese products by U.S. President Donald Trump pose the latest threat to an economy already weighed down by a prolonged real estate slump and sluggish consumer spending and private ...

Trump's trade war draws swift retaliation from Mexico, Canada, and China

President Donald Trump launched a trade war Tuesday against America's three biggest trading partners, drawing immediate retaliation from Mexico, Canada and China and sending financial markets into a tailspin as the U.S. faced the threat of rekindled inflation and paralyzing uncertainty for business. Just after midnight, Trump imposed 25% taxes, or tariffs, on Mexican and Canadian imports, though he limited the levy to 10% on Canadian energy. Trump also doubled the tariff he slapped last month on Chinese products to 20%. Beijing retaliated with tariffs of up to 15% on a wide array of U.S. farm exports. It also expanded the number of U.S. companies subject to export controls and other restrictions by about two dozen. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country would plaster tariffs on more than $100 billion of American goods over the course of 21 days. Today the United States launched a trade war against Canada, their closest partner and ally, their closest friend. At the

Tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada may boost Indian exports to US: Experts

Imposition of high tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada by the US is expected to help Indian exporters in increasing their shipments to the American market, experts say. They added that sectors which can be benefited include agriculture, engineering, machine tools, garments, textiles, chemicals, and leather. India was the fourth-largest gainer when the US imposed higher duties on Chinese goods during US President Donald Trump's first tenure. The Trump administration is imposing 25 per cent tariffs on Mexico and Canada and it will take effect on Tuesday. The US has also doubled the tariff on all Chinese imports to 20 per cent. "This can help Indian exporters in sectors such as agriculture, engineering, machine tools, garments, textiles, chemicals, and leather," President-designate of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) S C Ralhan said. The tariffs would affect exports from China, Mexico and Canada to the US as they would push prices of their goods in the American marke

Mexico to impose tariffs on US, joining China and Canada in trade war

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that Mexico will respond to 25% tariffs imposed by the United States with its own retaliatory tariffs on US goods. Sheinbaum said she will announce the products Mexico will target on Sunday in a public event in Mexico City's central plaza, perhaps indicating Mexico still hopes to de-escalate the trade war set off by US President Donald Trump. Unlike China and Canada, Mexico decided to wait until Sunday, though the country has said since January that it had a plan ready for precisely this scenario. Canada said it would slap tariffs on more than $100 billion of American goods over the course of 21 days. Sheinbaum said Tuesday that there is no reason for penalties on some of the largest trading partners for the US. There is no motive or reason, nor justification that supports this decision that will affect our people and our nations, she said. The tariffs that had been threatened by President Donald Trump's against Canada and Mexico we
