Life in Mizoram partially affected by 12-hr commercial vehicles' strike

Normal life was partly affected in Mizoram on Wednesday as commercial vehicles, including private buses and maxi-cabs, stayed off the roads because of their 12-hour strike, demanding a reduction in fuel prices. Ten organisations of vehicle owners and drivers called the strike from 6 am to 6 pm under the banner of the Mizoram Commercial Vehicle Union (MCVU), demanding a reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel, which were hiked on September 1 in the state. Normal life was partly affected in state capital Aizawl and some other towns as people faced inconvenience with buses and maxi-cabs staying off the road. However, state-run buses operated as usual, an official said, adding that services of two-wheeler taxis were also normal. No untoward incident was reported during the strike, he said. The state government hiked VAT on petrol from 5.23 per cent to 10 per cent and on diesel from 16.36 per cent to 18 per cent with effect from September 1. Besides, the government also imposed a

1.1 mn old medium, heavy CVs offer good potential for scrappage: ICRA

Around 1.1 million medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs), older than 15 years as of March 31 this year, offer a significant potential for scrappage, ratings agency ICRA said on Tuesday. While the actual scrappage could possibly be lower given the nature of usage of such vehicles, even if a proportion of these vehicles gets scrapped, it can support vehicle sales to some extent by spurring replacement demand, it said. The Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernisation Programme or the Scrappage Policy, announced in March 2021, is being implemented in phases, with effect from April 1 last year. While the first phase of the policy proposed to mandatorily scrap government vehicles older than 15 years, the second phase, which started on June 1 this year, mandates scrapping on the basis of fitness of the vehicle rather than age, and as such, is more voluntary in nature. ICRA also projects an additional around 5.7 lakh vehicles to cross the 15-year age threshold by March 2027, along with ..

Pre-BS era vehicles, mainly CVs should be scrapped: Road transport secy

Ministry of Road Transport & Highways Secretary Anurag Jain on Thursday pitched for scrapping of pre-BS era vehicles, especially commercial heavy vehicles, citing pollution and safety issues. Bharat Stage (BS) norms were introduced in the country in 2000. "If look at pre-BS vehicles, these do so much of pollution. The vehicles which are from before 2000 do pollution 15 times (more). Do you think such vehicles should run when there is so much of problems happening in our country due to pollution," Jain said. In case of such vehicles, he said, the fuel and maintenance costs also go up adding that there has been so much change in the safety features of vehicles in the last 15 years. "There is huge sense to actually scrap your own old vehicle. We are working from a lot of days to incentivise scrapping...If you scrap an old vehicle, you will bring safety, you will save on your fuel," he stressed. "So there is a need to think about such vehicles. This I am talking about commercial heavy

Expect commercial vehicle volumes to witness 4-7% dip this fiscal: ICRA

Hit by a high base of last year and weakness in demand, the domestic commercial vehicle industry is expected to witness a dip of 4-7 per cent in wholesale volumes in the current fiscal as compared to FY23, rating agency Icra said on Friday. The medium and heavy commercial vehicle (trucks) volumes are expected to contract by 4-7 per cent year-on-year given the high base effect and the impact of the Lok Sabha polls on infrastructure activities in the first few months. Similarly, the volume of light commercial vehicles (trucks) wholesale volumes is likely to decline by 5-8 per cent in FY2025 due to factors such as a high base effect, sustained slowdown in e-commerce, and cannibalisation from electric three-wheelers, Icra said. The rating agency expects the domestic CV industry's uptrend to be arrested in FY2025, with a decline of 4-7 per cent in wholesale volumes, it stated. This follows a muted year-on-year growth of 1 per cent and 3 per cent for wholesale and retail sales, ...
