A multi-institutional study on dengue led by researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) shows how the virus causing the disease has evolved dramatically over the last few decades in the Indian subcontinent. Cases of dengue a mosquito-borne viral disease have steadily increased in the last 50 years, predominantly in the South-East Asian countries, Bengaluru-based IISc said in a statement. And yet, there are no approved vaccines against dengue in India, although some vaccines have been developed in other countries. Contracts of 3,112 dengue breeding checking staff renewed: Delhi mayor

Contracts of 3,112 dengue breeding checking (DBC) staff of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi have been renewed for a year without any contractual service break, Mayor Shelly Oberoi said on Friday. The DBC staff are considered the backbone of the civic body's system in combating vector-borne diseases in the city. "Contracts of our DBC workers have been renewed for a year with effect from April 1, 2023. Their service contract has been renewed without any break. We will resolve issues of other employees too," she told reporters. A senior official said the previous contract ended on March 31 and according to an order issued on April 27, those were to be renewed retrospectively from April 3, 2023, till March 31, 2024. More than 3,300 dengue cases in Delhi, nearly 1,150 reported in Nov

Over 1,100 dengue cases have been reported in the national capital in the first three-and-a-half weeks of November, taking the infection tally of the vector-borne disease to more than 3,300 so far this year, according to a civic report issued on Monday. In October, 1,238 cases were logged. The dengue infection tally stood at 3,044 till November 18, and 279 more cases have been recorded since then till November 25. The city has also recorded 230 cases of malaria and 44 cases of chikungunya this year, according to the report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Of the total of 3,323 reported cases, 693 were logged in September. In 2017, the city logged 4,645 cases in the January 1-November 25 period, the report stated. Nearly 600 dengue cases have been reported in the national capital in the first two weeks of November, taking the infection tally of the vector-borne disease to more than 2,700 so far this year, according to a civic report issued on Monday. In October, 1,238 cases were logged. The dengue infection tally stood at 2,470 till November 4, and 291 more cases have been recorded since then till November 11. The city has also recorded 212 cases of malaria and 43 cases of chikungunya this year, according to the report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Assam reports 70 new dengue cases, tally 796; Karbi Anglong worst-hit

Seventy new dengue cases were detected in Assam, taking the tally to 796, according to data issued on Saturday. Karbi Anglong continued to be the worst- hit as the district reported 55 new cases, said the National Health Mission, Assam. Eight new cases were reported in Kamrup Metropolitan, while Bongaigaon and Jorhat accounted for two each. Cachar, Dima Hasao and Tinsukia reported one case each. Schools, colleges in Assam's Diphu shut for a week due to dengue outbreak

All schools and colleges in Diphu in Assam's Karbi Anglong district were asked to remain shut next week due to dengue outbreak in the city, an order said on Sunday. In the last five days, 270 cases of dengue were detected in the Karbi Anglong district, it said. Preventive measures have been initiated against the "impending epidemic", the order said, announcing the closure of all educational institutions in Diphu Municipal Board and Greater Diphu Town areas from Monday to Saturday. A National Health Mission (NHM) statement said that of the 285 dengue cases detected in the state between November 1 and 5, 271 were from the Karbi Anglong district. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to increase surveillance to control the spread of dengue cases. Adityanath held a meeting on dengue prevention at his residence, a government spokesperson said in a statement. The chief minister directed officials to take steps to effectively control the spread of dengue. He also ordered nodal officers to make field visits to review the steps taken for dengue prevention. He also directed municipal corporations and local bodies to undertake special fogging campaigns. Over 1,200 cases of dengue have been reported in the national capital in October, taking the infection tally of the vector-borne disease beyond the 2,000-mark so far this year, according to a civic report issued on Monday. 86% of Kolkata dengue cases last week reported from southern part: Report

The southern part of Kolkata has contributed 86 per cent of the total number of dengue cases reported from the metropolis in the last one week, as per official data. Data released by the West Bengal Health Department showed that out of the 596 dengue cases reported from the entire metropolitan area in the past seven days, south Kolkata accounted for 512. A Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) official said two boroughs covering the areas of Kasba, Jadavpur and Tollygunge in the south have logged the most number of dengue infections this year. Dengue patient in UP transfused fruit juice instead of platelets, dies

A private hospital here has been sealed for allegedly transfusing fruit juice instead of blood platelets to a dengue patient who later died, police said. After a video of the alleged incident went viral on social media, the district administration swung into action and the hospital was sealed on Thursday on the direction of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak. The patient, Pradeep Pandey, was shifted to another hospital, where he died after his condition deteriorated, officials said. However, no FIR has been registered at the local police station.
