'Tyre killers' to prevent wrong-lane driving in Noida

In order to prevent wrong-lane driving, Noida will soon have "tyre killers" on city roads, a first of its kind experiment in Uttar Pradesh, according to officials. Tyre killers are metal strips installed on roads with sharp spikes on one side. They act as minor speed breakers for those in the correct lane, while the tyres of vehicles in the wrong lane get punctured instantly. Overall, five crucial junctures have been identified for installation of the tyre killers. The first one at Sector 77 -- North Eye Junction, a densely populated area with several high rise apartments -- will be operational by Thursday, a senior official of the Noida Authority said. "Tyre killers will also be installed at the Hoshiarpur U-turn, Sector 61 Sai temple U-turn, near Sector 76 metro station and near Sector 16 A flyover," Noida Authority General Manager Rajeev Tyagi said. Three killed as two mini trucks collide

Three persons were killed when two mini trucks collided near Mangli village here Monday, police said. All the three victims were coming to Ludhiana to purchase fruits and vegetables from the 'mandi', they said. Additional DCP Surinder Lamba said the victims were identified as Balbir Singh (27), Pancham (26) and Uma Sahni (45). They all belonged to village Katani Kalan. Police said it was was a head-on collision as one truck was coming from the wrong side. Police further said that visibility was poor due to fog in the area.

Over 15,000 habitations affected due to water contaminated by Uranium: Drinking Water ministry

Over 15,000 habitations have been affected due to water contaminated by Arsenic and 400 by Uranium, the Rajya Sabha was informed Monday. Minister of State for drinking water and sanitation Ramesh Chandappa Jigajinagi said out of 15,804 habitations affected due to water contaminated by Arsenic, as many as 9,250 habitations were found in West Bengal and 4,320 in Assam. Over 400 habitations have been affected with water contaminated with Uranium, he said. Calling rural drinking water supply a state subject, Jigajinagi said the state governments have to plan, design, approve, execute, operate and maintain the schemes for providing safe drinking water to rural population. "The funds provided to states under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) can be utilised for providing safe drinking water to water quality affected population of the country," he said. Russia: 4 die in building collapse; searchers race weather

At least four people died Monday when part of a 10-story apartment building collapsed in Russia's Ural Mountains region, and hundreds of rescuers searched for survivors under the rubble in the frigid weather. The nation's top investigative agency, the Investigative Committee, said an explosion triggered by a gas leak apparently caused the collapse in the industrial city of Magnitogorsk. Mumbai Fire Brigade acts against 31 establishment owners for

The Mumbai Fire Brigade has acted against owners of 31 establishments, including malls, eateries and multiplexes, in the past four days for violation of norms, a senior official said Monday. Chief Fire Officer PS Rahangdale said the drive was carried out between December 27-30 and involved checking of fire-fighting equipment etc. "A total of 377 establishments like malls, eateries and multiplexes were checked and action was taken against owners of 31 places. Action included demolition, encroachment removal, LPG cylinders seizure, inspection report submission and notice issuance," he informed. The city has been rocked by fire incidents in the past few days, prime among them being one at the ESIC Hospital in Andheri on December 17 which killed 11 people and another in a high-rise in Tilaknagar area on December 27 that took five lives.

Meghalaya Miners Rescue: NDRF, Indian Navy begin joint operation

Indian Navy and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Monday morning launched a joint operation to rescue the miners trapped in an illegal mine at Lumthari village under the East Jaintia Hills.The Indian Navy divers have entered the main shaft to survey the bottom of the sheet using UnderWater Remotely Operated Vehicle (UWROV).As per an official statement, the Indian Navy has requested the district administration to assist in dewatering so that it comes down to 30 meters or within the safe diving limit, and then they will again commence diving. These safety measures are being undertaken to rule out decompression sickness.The statement says: "NDRF present on the site with two teams will provide all support and assistance to other agencies including Indian Navy. Three killed, 12 injured in road accident in UP

A pickup van carrying 15 passengers overturned here, killing three people and injuring 12 others, police said Monday. The passengers were returning to Mirzapur on Sunday after attending a programme when the accident occurred at Jagannathpur village in Bhadohi district, they said. While trying to save a motorcycle rider, the van driver lost control over the vehicle and it overturned, police said. The deceased were identified as Tillu, Rajkumar and Vinod, they said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, police said.

Want to see cows in shelters, not on streets, says MP CM

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath Monday said he wanted to see cows in shelters and not on the state's streets. He told officials during a review meeting here Monday that he wished to see cow shelters being built in each district of the state. "I do not want to see gau matas (cows) on the roads, Instead, I want to see them in cow sheds (shelters)," he said during a review meeting of officials here. Nath is a nine-time Lok Sabha MP from Chhindwara and was sworn in as CM on December 17. One dead, 6 hurt as car bound for Kodaikanal falls into gorge

: One person was killed and six others were injured Monday when theircar fell into a gorge after the driver lost control over the vehicle on the Kodaikanal-Palani Road, police said. The seven people, including the driver, were all friends from Thrissur in Kerala and were on the way to Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu to celebrate the new year there, the police said. Three of the six injured were rescued from the wreckage and hospitalised in Palani, while efforts were on to remove the rest from the accident site, they said. Centre approves Rs 1,146.12 cr cyclone 'Gaja' assistance for TN

The High-Level Committee (HLC) chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday approved additional assistance of Rs 1,146.12 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to Tamil Nadu, which was affected by cyclone 'Gaja' recently.Earlier on December 3, the Central government had released assistance of Rs 353.70 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) as an interim relief to the state.Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Union Minister for Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh and Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog Dr Rajiv Kumar are the members of the HLC.At least 46 people were killed after the cyclone Gaja hit 12 districts of Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh in November 2018. The storm also caused widespread damage to property and livestock.

4 dead, dozens missing after gas explosion hits Russia high-rise

Four people were killed and nearly 70 unaccounted for after a gas explosion tore through a residential building in Russia on Monday, leaving hundreds without a home in freezing temperatures on New Year's Eve. A large section of the building collapsed after a gas explosion around 6 am local time at the high-rise in the industrial city of Magnitogorsk, nearly 1,700 kilometres east of Moscow in the Ural mountains. Four people were confirmed dead and another four, including two children, were hospitalised, officials said, citing the latest information. Sixteen people including seven children have been evacuated. The whereabouts of 28 people have been established but the fate of nearly 70 was unclear. National television said some 50 people could be trapped under the rubble. National television broadcast footage of rescue workers combing through mangled heaps of concrete and metal in temperatures of minus 18 Celsius. Temperatures in Magnitogorsk were expected to plunge to minus 23 Celsius .

Bihar: 3 dead in Muzaffarpur fire

At least three people died in a massive fire that broke out in a factory in the Chaknooran area on Monday afternoon, police said."There is difficulty in finding bodies as the entire factory has burnt down. The number of deceased in the incident cannot be ascertained. The operation is underway," informed an official.Preliminary reports suggest, at least seven people could still be trapped in the fire. Firefighting operations are underway. Police along with other officials are present at the spot.More details awaited.
