IAF airlifts injured ITBP soldiers

The Air Force airlifted several Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) jawans who were critically injured when their bus fell into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, officials said on Tuesday. The incident had occurred on Monday when the bus was going from Badgam to Kanpur. The Western Air Command of the IAF sent two Cheetah helicopters from its Udhampur-based unit 'Hovering Hawks' to carry out casualty evacuation. "On getting a go ahead for one helicopter at 10:50 AM, Wg Cdr V Mehta as captain with co-pilot Arunima Vidhate got airborne from Udhampur. Meanwhile after ascertaining the requirement, on the call of Wg Cdr V Mehta, second helicopter got airborne from Udhampur with Sqn Ldr SK Prasad as captain and Flt Lt Siddhant Yadav as co-pilot," an IAF statement read. 15 injured as over crowded mini bus overturns

An over crowded mini bus overturned Tuesday when its driver lost control over the vehicle on an under-construction road here, injuring 15 passengers, police said. No causality was reported in the accident that occurred at village Bhindi Saidha at Ram Tirath Road on the outskirts of the city, they said. Forty-five people were travelling on the bus which had capacity to accommodate only 25 people, the police said. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Bus packed with picnickers falls in pit; cleaner dies; 24 kids

One person was killed and 24 school students were injured when an overcrowded bus returning from a picnic in Madhya Pradesh met with an accident Tuesday morning in Gujarat's Panchmahal district, said police. The private luxury bus, hired by an Ahmedabad-based school for picnic, fell into a roadside pit after the driver lost control over the vehicle at Parvadi village near Godhra, around 130km from here, said Police Sub-Inspector M V Jotana. According to an FIR lodged at the Godhra taluka police station, the bus was hired by the Vivekanand Hindi Higher Secondary School, situated in the Narol area of Ahmedabad. The mishap took place when the bus, packed with 107 passengers, including schoolchildren and teachers, was returning to Ahmedabad from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, where they had gone for a picnic. 4 killed, 4 injured in road mishap

At least four persons, including a two-year-old child and his mother, were killed and as many others injured when a vehicle in which they were travelling collided against a stationary lorry on the national highway bypass here Tuesday, police said. The vehicle was going from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh to Chandigarh when the mishap took place at Ghansoli village under Bithiri Chainpur police station, City SP Abhinandan Singh said. He said eight persons were sitting in the vehicle when the accident took place. The four persons, as Asharfi Lal, 45, Rajrani 35, her daughter Sanjana, 12, and 2-year-old son was killed on the spot, he added. The injured, including the driver, have been hospitalised here, the SP said.

At least 27 dead after bus, truck collide in Congo

A Congolese health official says at least 27 people are dead after a bus and a truck collided west of the capital, Kinshasa. Dr Sylvain Yuma with the health ministry says the accident occurred overnight and that excessive speed was to blame. The crash occurred in Kisantu in Kongo-Central province, about 200 kilometers southwest of Kinshasa. The city is on the main highway between the capital and the country's Matadi seaport. Yuma says at least 17 people are hurt, six of them seriously. They have been taken to Kinshasa. A mother and baby are among the dead. A collision between two trucks in October in a village near Kisantu killed at least 53 people.

Three labourers killed in bricks stacks collapse

Three labourers were killed and another was injured when stacks of bricks collapsed and fell on them in West Bengal's Nadia district Tuesday, police said. The labourers were lifting burnt bricks in a brick kiln at Panighata when suddenly the stacks and bricks collapsed and fell on them, they said. Two labourers died on the spot while one succumbed to injuries at hospital, the police added.

2 building workers killed as jeep collides with bike

Two construction workers were killed Tuesday when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a speeding jeep coming in the opposition direction near here, police said. Azhagiri (53) died on the spot while Shaktivel (44) succumbed on the way to hospital, the police said. The two were proceeding to work when the accident occurred, they said. The driver of the jeep Arun has been arrested, they added.

Alert signalman averts train accident

An alert Railways signalman Tuesday averted a train accident as Bhubaneswar-Jagdalpur Hirakhand Express was halted soon after the detection of a crack on the railway track in Odishas Rayagada district, a Railways official said. The crack was spotted by signalman Baishnav Gouda near Singapur Road station rear Rayagada and he immediately informed the station master, he said. When the train was approaching, I sensed the track created more sound than usual. I inspected it and spotted a crack on the rail track. Immediately I informed the station master not to clear the line, Gouda said. The train was halted near the station for around one and half hour. It departed for Jagdalpur after repair and restoration of the damaged portion of the track, yjr Railways official said.

Coast Guard ships, aircraft pressed into service to locate 'missing' ship

AAIB seeks NTSB help in probing IndiGo mid-air engine smoke incident

Aircraft accident probe agency AAIB has sought assistance from its US counterpart NTSB in investigating the incident of an IndiGo plane's Pratt & Whitney engine emitting smoke mid-air, a senior official said Tuesday. The incident, which took place in the A320 neo aircraft operating the Jaipur-Kolkata flight on December 10, is also the first time globally that smoke was detected from a P&W engine. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which has refuted allegations that it was going slow with the probe, is already pursuing the matter with Airbus and P&W. "In this case, AAIB is sending this engine to M/s P&W facility for detailed investigation and is seeking assistance from NTSB, USA also," a senior AAIB official told PTI. Fire destroys 39 houses, displaces 285 people in Nepal

Nearly 50 houses in a village were gutted by a massive fire that broke out in western Nepal's Kalikot district, displacing as many as 285 people, including 111 children, police said. The fire broke out from a house at around 1:30am on Monday and spread to other houses in the clustered settlement. "Clothes, food grains and other valuables belonging to 87 families living in 39 houses were destroyed in the incident that started at midnight and seven persons who were trying to douse the fire got injured, said Police Inspector Devendra Malla. The fire that broke out at Khada settlement of Palata Rural Municipality-1 in Kalikot on Monday morning destroyed 39 houses and displaced as many as 285 people including 111 children. Four killed as vehicle falls into gorge in Shimla

Four tourist from Haryana were killed and two injured after their car fell into a 200-metre-deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Theog tehsil on Tuesday, a police official said. Jagpreet, Deepak, Ajay and Lokesh died on the spot. They were employees of a private company in Haryana's Ballabgarh area and had come to visit Shimla and its nearby tourist places, the official said. The accident took place when they were going to Narkanda. Their car fell into an over 200 metres deep gorge near Devi Morh on National Highway -5 around 7.30 am, he said. The injured-- Rahul and Rohtas --are undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital in Theog, the official said. He said a case has been registered under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act-endangering life) and 304 A (death by negligence) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the car's driver. Woman killed, 4 injured in wall collapse after cylinder blast

A 55-year-old woman was killed and four others were injured when a wall of a house collapsed due to a gas cylinder blast in Maharashtra's Thane city on Tuesday, an official said. The cylinder exploded around 9.30 am in a single storey house in Panchpakhadi area following which one of its walls collapsed on an adjacent house, Thane civic body's regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said. Kantibai Wankhede, who resided in the adjacent house, suffered serious injuries in the wall collapse mishap. She was rushed to the civil hospital where doctors declared her dead, he said. Besides, four occupants of the house in which the cylinder exploded, including two women and a 12-year-old boy, received burn injuries and they were undergoing treatment at the same hospital, he added.
