Four workers die after tower crane lift collapses

The lift of a tower crane collapsed Monday from a height of about 35 feet at a DDA flats construction site in Narela area, killing four workers, police said. The incident occurred at around 4.30 pm when a service engineer and three labourers were working on the lift of the tower crane, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said. He said Pramod (30), Sonu (25), Sonu (27) and Raj Kumar (25) were injured in the incident. They were rushed to a hospital where they were declared brought dead, he said. A case was registered, he said, adding further investigation is underway. The lift collapsed from a height of about 35 feet from the ground due to some unknown reason, he said, adding the four men were in the lift which was open from all four sides.

Speeding sports car crashes into pole in Delhi, no casualties

A speeding modified sports car lost control and rammed into a pole here, police said Monday. No casualties were reported in the accident that occurred on Sunday night in south Delhi's Lodhi Road area near the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, they said. The car was being driven by a woman, accompanied by a man, at the time of the accident, they added. She was trying to take a turn but lost control and rammed into the pole. Due to the impact, one of the wheels of the car came off, a police officer said. Fearing arrest, both the occupants of the car fled away from the spot, the officer added.

Earthquake measuring 5.3 strikes J-K

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Jammu and Kashmir on Monday but there were no reports of any damage, an official said. The quake occurred tonight at 8:13 PM, an official of the Disaster Management Department said here. He said the epicentre of the quake was at the depth of 10 km at a latitude of 34.3 degrees north and longitude of 78.3 degrees east. There were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property so far, the official said.

Karna seeks immediate aid of Rs 2434 cr for affected farmers

In the face of severe drought and crop loss due to floods in large parts of the state, the Karnataka government Monday sought immediate release of Rs 2,434 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund for affected farmers. A month after chief minister H D Kumaraswamy approached the centre seeking financial aid, Karnataka revenue minister R V Deshpande wrote to the Union Home minister Rajnath Singh and Union Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh. Highlighting the grim situation, Deshpande said about 80 per cent of the state, comprising 145 taluk, were either affected by drought or flood. These natural disaster have badly impacted the states economy with a cumulative loss of more than Rs.20,000 crore, Deshpande said. "I request you to kindly consider and expeditiously release the requested financial assistance of Rs.2434 crore from National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to provide timely relief for aggrieved farmers," the minister said. C'garh: 7 BMP jawans on poll duty injured after bus overturns

Seven Bihar Military Police (BMP) personnel on poll duty were Monday injured in a road accident in Chhattisgarhs Dhamtari district, police said. A bus carrying 15 BMP personnel, heading from Raipur to Naxal-affected Kondagaon, overturned on National Highway 30 under Kurud police station limits, a local official said. The driver lost control of the vehicle due to a mechanical glitch and it overturned, injuring seven who were shifted to a nearby hospital. Of these, six were discharged after preliminary treatment while one trooper who was injured in the head was shifted to Raipur, he added. A case has been registered in this connection, the official said. The state goes to polls in two phases on November 12 and November 20.

Hailakandi boat capsize: Three youths still untraced

Search operation to trace the three persons who went missing in a country boat capsize in Hailakandi district on Sunday continued on Monday by SDRF personnel but did not bear any fruit, official sources said. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel resumed their search operation in the morning but strong undercurrent thwarted their efforts, the sources said. In-charge of Fire Service, Hailakandi, Albert L Khobung said that the divers could not dive deep but different techniques were being applied to trace the missing persons. The operation was, however, called off in the evening due to low visibility, Khobung said, adding, deep divers from Silchar have joined the SDRF on Monday. Indian pilot dead in Indonesian plane crash, PM Modi expresses grief

Indian pilot Bhavye Suneja died on Monday after the Indonesian plane he captained with 189 passengers and crew on board the budget carrier crashed in the Java Sea, Indian Embassy here confirmed. Suneja, 31, was flying the Lion Air flight JT610 which lost contact with the ground officials 13 minutes after taking off from Jakarta Soekarno Hatta International Airport. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft en-route to Pangkal Pinang city crashed near Kerawang, 32 miles east of Jakarta. "Our deepest condolences on the tragic loss of lives in the Lion Air Plane crash, off the coast of Jakarta today. Most unfortunate that Indian Pilot Bhavye Suneja who was flying JT610 also lost his life," Indian Embassy in Indonesia said in a tweet. Three people mowed down by train near Nangloi railway station

Three people sitting on tracks were run over by a train near the Nangloi Railway Station here on Monday, the Railways said. The three, who are believed to be drunk, were sitting on the tracks at 7.15 am when the Bikaner-Delhi Express mowed them down. The train driver sounded the siren but the trio did not vacate the tracks, local police said. The three men have been identified as Mukesh Verma (50), a tailor, and auto-rickshaw drivers Sushil Kumar (25) and Dishant (26), all residents of Mangolpuri, they said. Preliminary probe indicated that the three were gambling and drinking on the tracks and did not see the oncoming train or hear its siren, officials said. "The bodies have been shifted to the Sabzi Mandi mortuary. This is a clear case of accident by a running train," DCP (Railways) Dinesh Gupta said. The Road Transport and Highways Ministry is exploring the possibility of roping in Russian navigation system Glonass for more accurate spotting of accident sites and quick response, an official source said Monday. Glonass is Russia's version of GPS. Glonass Union is a non-commercial partnership for the promotion of navigation technologies development and application. "A presentation from Glonass was made before Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari as these days many positioning chips are using both GPS and Glonass for greater accuracy and backup. For the road ministry this would be useful in emergency response - greater accuracy in pin pointing accident spot and in GPS based tolling," a source said after the presentation. Aviation regulator DGCA on Monday said no technical issue has been experienced by Boeing 737 MAX planes operating in the country, after an aircraft crashed in Indonesia, with with 188 people on board. Earlier in the day, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft operated by Indonesia's Lion Air crashed into the sea shortly after taking-off from the Jakarta. Jet Airways and SpiceJet are the Indian carriers that fly Boeing 737 MAX. A total of six such planes are in operation in the country.
