An error during assembly stage of a Pratt & Whitney engine led to in-flight engine shut down of an A320 neo plane, operated by GoAir, in February last year, says a probe report. According to the report, the misinterpretation of the MEL (Minimum Equipment List) by the operator regarding flight hours for the release of aircraft with chip warning caused the engine to fail in-flight is a contributory factor. The plane, flying from the national capital to Bengaluru, had 193 people on board, including six crew members. In recent times, there have been various instances of A320 neo aircraft, powered by P&W engines, facing glitches. IndiGo and GoAir had grounded some of their A320 neo planes due to the engine issues. Currency notes worth lakhs of rupees were soaked as flood water entered banks and ATM counters at Aska town in Odisha's Ganjam district, officials said on Wednesday. The town remained inundated for three days due to floods in the aftermath of the cyclone 'Titli'. "We have at least four ATMs and two deposit machines. At the time of floods, over Rs 60 lakh were in the machines. The currency notes got soaked after waters of river Rushikulya entered the ATMs and branches. The exact loss amount would be known later," said SBI's ATM Channel Manager Debadutta Satapathy. "All the soaked and damaged currencies will be exchanged with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)," he said. Another state-run lender, Andhra Bank, also reported about soggy currency notes in the sugar town. The family of an Uttar Pradesh native killed in an attack by wild animals would now be given a compensation of Rs five lakh within 24 hours of the incident, an official said Wednesday. The death toll in Cyclone Titli and subsequent floods has mounted to 57, including 10 children, while loss suffered due to the calamity has been pegged at over Rs 2,200 crore, the Odisha government said Wednesday. The government, earlier in the day, had confirmed 52 deaths due to the calamity that ravaged many parts of the state, mainly the southern region, last week. Ten people were missing following landslides in Gajapati district and a clearer picture would emerge once information about them is obtained, Chief Secretary A P Padhi said here, after a review meeting with officials. The state government has information of about 57 deaths from various affected areas so far, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) B P Sethi said. At least two persons, including a child, were killed and five others sustained injuries when a tanker hit a van in central Nepal on Wednesday. The accident occurred in the Chitawan district when the van was heading towards Dhading from Pokhara and the tanker was also coming in the same direction, a police official said. An unidentified child and a 25-year-old died on the spot in the accident, according to the police. The injured passengers are undergoing treatment at the Chitawan District Hospital in Bharatpur and Chitwan College of Medical Science. One among the injured is said to be in critical condition. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Wednesday announced a hike in the ex-gratia amount from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed during cyclone Titli and resultant floods in Odisha. Patnaik made the announcement while undertaking an on-the-spot visit to Champapur village under the jurisdiction of Gangabada gram panchayat of Raigada block in the worst-hit Gajapati district. Earlier, the state government had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the victims. Now, under the changed circumstances, while Rs 4 lakh would be given from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), the remaining amount of Rs 6 lakh would be given from the chief minister's relief fund, an official said. Four members of a family, including two children, on their way to a temple Wednesday were mowed down by a truck on Satna-Simaria road near here, the police said. Two others were injured in the accident. The incident occurred at around 4 AM when a group of six persons, including two children, was walking towards the Durga temple, located 5 kms away from the city, an officer said. "The victims are identified as Chunni Pyasi (65), Renu (30), Lalla (6) and Shubhi (8)," Kolgawa police station in-charge RP Singh said, adding that they were residents of Ghugchhiyai village. The injured persons are undergoing treatment in Satna, he said. Police were alerted about the incident around an hour later by some passers-by, the officer said. A case has been registered against the truck driver who fled the spot after the accident, Singh said, adding that further investigation is underway.
