Landslides lead to closure of Jammu-Srinagar NH

Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was suspended for the second consecutive day today due to landslides triggered by heavy rains in Ramban district. However, the Mughal road is opened for two-way traffic. The nearly 270-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was blocked by fresh landslides at Digdol in Ramban district, they said. They said no damage or casualty was reported in the landslides and it caused a massive traffic jam on the road leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. Over 400 vehicles are stranded at various places en route, they said. The men and machines of BRO are working to clear the highway of landslides and make it trafficable, they said, adding two major landslides at Seri in Ramban and Kheri in Udhampur were cleared by the BRO and the highway made motorable for a brief time but fresh landslides blocked it. Traffic personnel said the Mughal Road, connecting the twin districts of Poonch .

Death toll rises to 19 in Himachal rains

A five-year-old boy drowned in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district this morning, taking the death toll in rain-related incidents in the state to 19 in the last two days, an official said. The body of Mohit Pathania, who drowned at Nurpur area, has been recovered and an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 provided to his father, a district official said. At least 18 people have died in various parts of the state during the incessant rains since Sunday evening. The highest casualty have been in Solan district (eight), followed by Mandi district (four), three in Kangra district, two in Hamirpur district and one each in Bilaspur and Una districts. Interim relief was distributed by the district administrations to the affected families, a state official had said.

Heavy rains in Himachal unlikely in next 5 days: Met dept

In what may provide relief to the residents of Himachal Pradesh, the meteorological department said today that there was no possibility of heavy rainfall in the state in the next five days. Light-to-moderate rainfall are likely to occur at a few places over middle and low hills and at isolated places over higher reaches in the next three days, said Manmohan Singh, director, Meteorological Centre, Shimla. As per the latest weather forecast, there is no possibility of heavy rains in the next five days. Light rain and thundershowers are expected today in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Una and Bilaspur, the director said. Heavy rains have wrecked havoc in the most parts of state since Sunday evening, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 people.

Quake measuring magnitude 5.1 hits Japan

An earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude on the Richter Scale struck Chiba Prefecture in Japan on Tuesday morning.It was centred 13 kilometres away from Isumi, a city in Chiba Prefecture at 9:05 a.m (local time).No injury or casualty has been reported till now.Further details are currently awaited.On August 7, an earthquake measuring magnitude 5.6 struck off the east coast of Japan. Woman among 3 dead after passenger vehicle falls into gorge in JK

Three persons, including a woman, were today killed and seven others injured when a passenger vehicle skidded off a road and fell into a deep gorge in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The incident occurred near Gursai Parnav when the driver of a car, on his way to Surankote from Mandhar, lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a curve on the hilly road, a police officer said. He said a rescue operation was launched immediately soon after the vehicle rolled down into the 250 feet gorge. The rescuers found one person dead on the spot and the rest of the passengers were seriously injured, the official said, adding that the injured were evacuated to a hospital, where two more persons, including a woman, succumbed to their injuries.

Centre releases Rs 320 cr to Kerala as disaster relief fund in 2018-19

Over Rs 320 crore has been released by the Centre to the Kerala government as calamity relief fund during 2018-19, the Home Ministry said tonight. The allocation of the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) for 2018-19 was Rs 214 crore, of which the central government's share was Rs 160.50 crore and the state government's share was Rs 53.50 crore. The balance available in the SDRF account as on April 1 this year as reported by the state accountant general Rs 348.45 crore, a home ministry statement said. The first instalment of the central share of the SDRF for 2018-19, released on July 20 this year was Rs 80.25 crore, while the corresponding state share was Rs 26.75 crore. The second instalment of the central share of SDRF for 2018-19, released on August 10, 2018 was Rs 80.25 crore and the corresponding state share was Rs 26.75 crore. Amidst rains, Himachal schools to remain closed tomorrow

One killed in rain-related incident in U'khand; MeT warns of heavy rain

A girl was killed and a woman injured in separate rain-related incidents in Uttarakhand today even as the weather department issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in at least eight districts in the state in the next 24 hours. In view of the MeT warning, the authorities were asked to stay alert to deal with any untoward situation. 3 WWII bombs removed from Baltic Sea resort in Poland

More than 2,000 people were evacuated today while Polish navy experts removed three World War II bombs from the Baltic Sea bed at the vacation resort of Kolobrzeg. The spokesman for the local navy unit, Jacek Kwiatkowski, said the bombs were hoisted out of the sea and onto a special truck and were taken to a test range for a controlled detonation. Each bomb weighed about 300 kilograms (660 pounds) and their impact radius was estimated at 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). Two other metal objects found at the site turned out to be parts of an old anchor and some scrap metal. Dariusz Trzeciak, a Kolobrzeg city official, said about 2,000 residents and 200 vacationers were evacuated in their own cars or in buses. They were later allowed to return. 'Six NHs among 923 roads closed after landslides in Himachal'

Six national highways were among 923 roads closed due to landslides during heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh since yesterday, a state government official said today. The state government has released Rs 96.50 crore for relief and rescue operations following loss of human life and the property, he added. Siblings run over by auto-rickshaw in Bihar

Two siblings died today after a speeding auto-rickshaw ran over them in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, a senior police officer said. The incident happened this afternoon near Kerma village in Kudhni police station area of the district when Mohammad Sahil (10) and Atika Hasan (8) were returning home from school, DSP (West) Krishna Murari Prasad said. "The children, residents of Raghuram Sarmasta village of Muzaffarpur, were rushed to a private hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries," the officer told reporters. The driver of the auto-rickshaw, however, fled the spot, leaving his vehicle behind, he said. An irate mob blocked the Kerma-Baghi road after the accident and set the auto-rickshaw on fire, prompting police to take control of the situation, Prasad said. "The blockade was lifted only after an FIR was filed in the case," he added.

HP suffers loss of Rs 775 crore due to landslides triggered by heavy rains: Thakur

Flood alert for Bhavani river

A flood alert has been issued to people living on the banks of Bhavani River in Mettupalayam in the district as 6,000 cusecs of water was being released from the Pilloor Dam, officials said today. With heavy rains being experienced in Coimbatore and neighbouring Nilgiris and other districts, the dam, already full, was receiving 10,000 cusecs of water, they said. Besides, surplus water from Kunda Dam in nearby Nilgiris district was also being let into Bhavani river and hence there could be possibility of it overflowing, District Collector T N Hariharan said in a statement. Considering the safety of the dam, authorities were releasing 6,000 cusecs of water through two sluice gates, he said advising people living on the banks to move to safer places.
