Indonesia's 'child' of Krakatoa spews ash and lava

An Indonesian volcano known as the "child" of the legendary Krakatoa erupted today, spewing a plume of ash high into the sky as molten lava streamed down from its summit. Anak Krakatau -- a small volcanic island that emerged from the ocean a half century after Krakatoa's deadly 1883 eruption -- has rumbled back to life in recent weeks, spitting flaming rocks and ash from its crater. No one lives on Krakatau, which forms a small island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, but the peak is a popular tourist spot. Indonesia's geological agency has not raised the alert level for the mountain. However, there is a one kilometre no-go zone around its summit. Indian-origin landlord jailed for fire deaths in UK

An Indian-origin landlord in the UK has been jailed for 12 months over his failure to ensure proper fire safety standards which led to the death of two children in a fire at a property owned and managed by him, the first prosecution of its kind in the country since new smoke alarm regulations were introduced in October 2015. Kamal Bains, a letting agent responsible for the property in Huddersfield area of West Yorkshire, failed to fit smoke alarms to the house for tenants. The 51-year-old was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court yesterday in what is believed to be the first prosecution of its kind in the UK since new Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations were introduced in October 2015. 14 killed, 17 injured as bus falls into gorge in U'khand

Fourteen people were killed and 17 injured when the state-run bus they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge around 15 km from Chamba in Tehri district of Uttarakhand today. The accident occurred near Kirgani village on Chamba-Uttarkashihighway around 8.20 am. The Haridwar-bound Uttarakhand Roadways bus plunged into a 250-metre deep gorge, killing thirteen people on the spot and leaving eighteen injured, Tehri District Magistrate Sonika said. One of the injured persons died at the hospital during treatment, she said. Eleven seriously injured were flown in choppers to AIIMS, Rishikesh while the rest were undergoing treatment at district hospital Baurari and Masihi hospital Chamba, she said. Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat expressed deep grief at the loss of lives in the accident and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those injured. Missing fishermen: Four more bodies found

Bodies of four more of the 19 missing fishermen of West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district were found in the Bay of Bengal today by rescuers, taking the total number of bodies recovered so far to six, officials said. With the recovery of six bodies, search is on for the 13 missing fishermen, the officials said. The Coast Guard, along with the police and a fishermen's association, is conducting search and rescue operations to find fishermen who had gone missing on Monday afternoon. A Coast Guard official, who did not wish to be quoted, said Coast Guard Dornier aircraft spotted the four bodies today around 30 nautical miles off the Dalhousie island. The trawlers of the fishermen's association went to the spot and retrieved the bodies after the Coast Guard conveyed to them the location of the bodies. Five out of the six bodies have been identified and sent for postmortem, officials said. Yesterday one of the missing boats was also sighted about 30 nautical miles south off .

US authorities probe midair crash that killed Indian trainee pilot

Police and aviation authorities in Florida's Miami-Dade are scouring a swampy grassland for clues to help explain what caused the midair collision between two small aircraft in which an Indian woman trainee pilot and three others were killed. The body of the fourth victim of the midair collision between the two small aircraft of a Miami flight school over a swampy grassland was retrieved yesterday, ending the mission to look for survivors, the Miami Herald reported. 14 dead in bus mishap, magisterial inquiry ordered

Tehri Garhwal, (Uttarakhand) [India], July 19 (ANI)The Uttarakhand government has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured.Speaking to ANI, IG (SDRF) Sanjay Gunjyal informed that 14 were dead and 18 injured in the incident. 3 die as car falls in gorge in Himachal

Three people were killed and two others injured after the car in which they were travelling fell into a deep gorge in Himachal's Kinnaur district this morning, police said. The deceased were identified as Yogeshwer (29), Surya Kant (25) and Nain Chand (40), Superintendent of Police Sakshi Verma said. Rohit and Mulak Raj, aged 20, sustained serious injuries in the accident and were referred to a hospital in Rampur, the SP said, adding an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 was granted to the kin of the deceased and Rs 5,000 to the injured.

Five people were killed and two injured when the car in which they were travelling collided head-on with a bus at nearby Perumbavoor today, police said. The accident occurred in the early hours today when the car carrying seven people from Elappara in Idukki district to Cochin International Airport to see off a relative hit the bus, they said. Another body pulled out from rubble in Gr Noida; death toll 9

Rescuers today pulled out another body from the debris of the two adjacent buildings that collapsed in Grater Noida on the outskirts of Delhi, pushing the death toll to nine, a fire department official said. A six-floor under-construction building crashed on a five-storey building next to it, bringing it down as well, in Shahberi village under Bisrakh police station on Tuesday night. Chief Fire Officer Arun Kumar Singh said the body was pulled out this morning. He has been identified as Naushad. Eight bodies were found until late last night. At least 12 labourers were in the under-construction building and all of them were feared trapped, according to Singh. He said the operation to remove the debris may take another 20 hours. Greater Noida building collapse: Death toll rises to 9

The death toll in the Greater Noida building collapse rose to nine on Thursday, after the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) retrieved four more bodies from the rubble.Two under construction buildings, in Greater Noida's Shah Beri village collapsed on Tuesday night.The search and rescue operation is still underway in the village, to locate several other persons which are feared to be trapped under the debris.Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath earlier on Wednesday announced compensation of Rs. two lakh each for the next of kin of those killed in the incident.The chief minister also announced Rs 50,000 each for the injured.At least four people have been arrested till now in connection with the matter and the District Magistrate has set up a magisterial inquiry under the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) executive to probe the case.

Tanker swept away in river

A milk tanker and a driver were swept away in swirling waters of the Pangoli river on KamthaAmgaon Road in Gondiya district of east Maharashtra, police said today. The incident occurred last night when Gautam Patil (48) tried to cross the bridge on the river, which is is full spate due to heavy rains, in the tanker, police said. Despite being warned by locals not to proceed, Patil drove on resulting into the mishap. The tanker was found 2 kms away from the spot of the accident, a police official said, adding that Patil remained untraced. CM says FIR against aircraft owners if they had conducted test

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said that an FIR would be registered against the owners of the aircraft which crashed in Mumbai last month if they were found to have forced the pilot to conduct a test flight despite adverse opinion. Fadnavis was replying to a question by Congress's Vijay Wadettiwar in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. A twin-engine King Air C 90 aircraft crashed at an under-construction building in Ghatkopar in east Mumbai on June 28, killing five persons including both the pilots. The aircraft was owned by UY Aviation. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) was probing the incident, the chief minister said. "We would take action against the owner in case he is found to have forced the pilot to carry out the test despite adverse remarks (by pilots or technical experts)," he said. Railways didn't conduct safety audit of Andheri ROB: Fadnavis

The Railways didn't conduct the safety audit of the Gokhale bridge in suburban Andheri in Mumbai, part of which had collapsed earlier this month, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the Assembly today. He also assured action against the officials responsible for the July 3 incident in which one person was killed and local train services were badly affected. "The bridges within railway premises, though constructed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), should be maintained by Railways and it is supposed to conduct a safety audit as well. "Railways maintained the (Gokhale Road) bridge on regular basis but they did not conduct its safety audit," he told the House in response to questions raised by legislators. Fadnavis said the BMC has completed structural audit of 304 bridges under its jurisdiction.
