Under-construction building collapses in Noida; 2 killed, many feared trapped

A six-storey under-construction building collapsed in Greater Noida, killing at least two persons and trapping several others under the debris, officials said today. At least 12 labourers were inside the building in Shah Beri village when the incident took place and all of them are feared trapped, Chief Fire Officer Arun Kumar Singh said. A National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) officer said that two bodies have been pulled out of the rubble. Fire and police officials are carrying out rescue operations. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the Gautam Budh Nagar district magistrate and the police to monitor relief and rescue activities along with the NDRF team. DGP O P Singh has informed the chief minister about the rescue operation being carried out by police and NDRF personnel.

One more body was recovered from the debris, raising the death toll to three people, in the Shah Beri village building collapse incident.A few hours ago, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) recovered two bodies while conducting the search operation.Several people are feared trapped under the debris. Police and rescue teams are present at the spot.Soon after the mishap, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident and asked the District Magistrate to follow up with the National Disaster Response Force team and Police for relief measures and to ensure immediate rescue.Meanwhile, State's Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya took note of the incident and assured the residents that the government will make all efforts to rescue the victims."There has been news of building collapse in Greater Noida. Two male dead bodies have been retrieved by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Greater Noida's Shah Beri village, where two under-construction buildings collapsed on Tuesday.NDRF Commandant, PK Srivastava said, "Two male dead bodies have been recovered. Four NDRF teams and dog squad are present on the spot, chances of any victim being alive are scant. 8 killed in car accident in Gujarat

Eight people were killed while one got injured after a car caught fire following a collision with a truck on Rajkot-Morbi Highway near Morbi district's Tankara town in Gujarat on Tuesday.Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-2, Rajkot, Karanraj Veghela said, "All deceased are from the same family, injured is currently undergoing treatment."More details are awaited.

Greater Noida buildings collapse: Rescue operations underway

Rescue operation is underway by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Greater Noida's Shah Beri village after two under-construction buildings collapsed on Tuesday.Union Minister Mahesh Sharma, who reached the spot, said that 12 ambulances have been rushed to facilitate the operation.He said, "Our priority right now is to save any life that is left. 12 ambulances are present here and all the hospitals nearby have been alerted. NDRF teams and dog squads are also present on the spot."Meanwhile, Kumar Vineet, additional district magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar, said, "As of now, we don't know what happened. Monsoon finally arrives in the country

Guj CM's chopper fails to land twice due to bad weather: Officials

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani's helicopter failed to land twice at the designated locations due to inclement weather after he set out to reach flood-affected Gir Somnath district, officials said. The chopper finally landed at Jetpur in Rajkot district, from where the chief minister travelled by road to visit the flood-hit areas in Gir Somnath district. Earlier today, the helicopter carrying Rupani and other officials, had to return to Gandhinagar as it could not land at the Keshod airstrip in Junagadh district due to bad weather, an official said. 2 planes make emergency landings at Kansas City airport in US

Authorities say two planes carrying more than 250 passengers made emergency landings at Kansas City International Airport in the US. Kansas City Aviation Department spokesman Joe McBride says the first emergency landing happened around 4:30 p.m. (local time) yesterday after crews on Delta Air Lines flight 923 reported a fuel leak. The plane was coming from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to Kansas City with 117 people aboard. McBride says about an hour later, Alaska Airlines flight 1097 was diverted to Kansas City because of pressurisation issues. The Alaska Airlines flight had been headed from Dulles Airport in suburban Washington, DC, to Los Angeles International Airport with 150 passengers. No injuries were reported.

Vistara's Ahd-Bengaluru flight aborts take off after bird hit

A Vistara flight from Ahmedabad to Bengaluru, carrying 101 passengers, had to abort its take off this morning after a bird hit, officials said. All passengers were safe and were flown by another flight, they said. The flight UK 924 was scheduled to take off at 9.40 am but it was aborted after taxing following the bird hit. "One of our aircraft, operating flight UK 924 from Ahmedabad to Bengaluru, this morning encountered a bird strike during take-off run. The pilots rejected the take-off as per the Standard Operating Procedures to ensure (that) safety is not compromised," a Vistara spokesperson said. The aircraft underwent necessary inspections following the incident, which has been reported to the relevant authorities, the spokesperson added. The aircraft, after being grounded for close to 12 hours, was made airworthy again.

Boards put up in Kalyan to warn motorists about potholes

The Kalyan civic body has put up boards at key junctions asking motorists to be careful while driving, a move that comes after five people lost their lives due to pothole-related mishaps in the town. The boards, up by the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), tell motorists that due to heavy rains the roads had been damaged, resulting in potholes, and ask them to drive their vehicles carefully. Heavy rains during the last weeks have severely damaged roads in Kalyan and left them with several potholes. Over the past few weeks, at least five peopoe have lost their lives in accidents on potholes. The last death was reported on Saturday. KDMC Public Relations Officer Prasad Thakur, in an official release today, said the work of filling up of potholes has been taken up on a war footing. Indian navy rescues 2 crew members stranded in floating dock

The Indian Navy today rescued two crew members stranded inside a floating dock, which got grounded off Thottappally beach in Alappuzha district, a Defence spokesman said here today. The floating dry dock, Al Fattan, coming from Sabang in Indonesia and headed to Abu Dhabi had got grounded off Thottappally beach two days ago. It belongs to a firm based in Abu Dhabi. There was a request for assistance with rescue of two crew members stranded inside. An Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) from Indian Naval Air Squadron 322 was launched by Southern Naval Command to evacuate the Indonesian crew members. They were brought to INS Garuda and handed over to Coast Guard and civil administration for immigration formalities, the spokesman said. Punjab govt announces compensation package for crop damage

The Punjab government today sanctioned Rs 32.82 crore as compensation to farmers for crop damage due to natural calamity. Revenue Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria said the farmers suffered heavy loss due to rain and hailstorm for which the state government has approved Rs 32.82 crore for 51788-acre crop damage from June 2017 to July 2018. The crops were damaged at various places, including Patiala, Sangrur, SBS Nagar, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Faridkot, and Bathinda. Sarkaria said the compensation would prove to be a big relief for farmers who had suffered heavy crop damage due to the inclement weather. The minister said the state government was fully committed to ensure welfare of the farmers and leaving no stone unturned to help them come out from the current agrarian crisis. The Punjab government has already launched debt waiver scheme for the small and marginal farmers, he added.

'12,264 people died in 35,853 road accidents in Maha in 2017'

Maharashtra reported 12,264 deaths in 35,853 road accidents last year, the state Assembly was told today. In a written reply, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the lower House that 20,465 people were injured in these mishaps. Fadnavis also stated that 9,243 accidents took place on state roads between January and March 2018 in which 3361 people died. Urban areas reported 27 per cent of the accidents during January-March period while remaining mishaps occurred in rural areas. The percentage of deaths in rural and urban areas was 83 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively, Fadnavis added. Referring to the National Crime Record Bureau report for 2015, the CM said the state was ranked third in the country when it came to the number of road accidents. China builds unmanned weather station in Tibet near India border

China has set up an unmanned automatic weather observation station in Tibet near Arunachal Pradesh border to provide meteorological support to its military and assist operations of aircraft and missiles in case of "regional live-fire conflicts", a media report said today. The station in Yumai township under Lhunze county of Shannan Prefecture in Tibet will eliminate a blind area of meteorological services, state-run Global Times reported.
