Nineteen people were injured when a plane crashed today in a grassy area of the South African capital Pretoria, emergency services said, giving a preliminary toll. "Medics from ER24 and other services are at the scene of a plane crash at Wonderboom in Pretoria," Russell Meiring, spokesman for the ER24 medical service said. "We have 19 injured casualties ranging from minor to critical injuries at this stage and no confirmed fatalities.
The Uttarakhand Police will tomorrow launch a statewide drive against overcrowded public transport vehicles, days after 48 people were killed when an overloaded bus fell into a deep gorge in Pauri district. During the fortnight-long drive, penal action will be taken against public transport drivers found carrying more passengers than the capacity of their vehicles, Additional Director General (Law and order) Ashok Kumar said. It will include issuance of challans, cancellation of driving licenses and impounding vehicles, he added. On July 1, a 28-seater bus, which was carrying 58 passengers, fell into a 200 metre deep gorge killing 45 people on the spot and injuring 13. Expressing concern over the growing number of road accidents in the state, the Uttarakhand High Court had asked the state government to strictly enforce provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and take stern action against violators.

As many as 89 people on board an Air India Express flight had a narrow escape today as the aircraft overshot the runway while landing at the Mumbai airport amid heavy rains. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft arriving here from Vijaywada stopped 10 feet beyond the end of the runway on the paved stopway, an Air India Express spokesperson said. However, all passengers were safe and there was no damage to either the aircraft or the runway, the airline said. At the time of the incident, the secondary runway (14) was in use as the main runway (27) was closed for operations due to maintenance work. Last September, a SpiceJet aircraft carrying 183 passengers overshot the runway during landing and skidded off into the unpaved surface due to wet conditions caused by heavy rains. Torrential rains in many parts of Karnataka have resulted in many dams, including those across the river Cauvery, receiving copious inflows and some reaching their full level,a top official of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre said today. "If you see the status (of dams), it can be easily said that this year the level in all of them is quitesatisfactory compared to that over the last 10 years,"director of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) Dr G S Srinivasa Reddy, told PTI. Four persons were washed away since Sunday as heavy rains are lashing the district, authorities said today. Several rivers and streams in the district are in flood. The district has recorded an average 299 mm of rainfall in the current season, while 40.33 mm of rainfall was recorded since yesterday, Met department officials said. A 30-year-old man drowned in a pond at Virar near here today, a police official said. Rakesh Khot had gone for swimming in Dongarpada talao (pond) along with a friend. He, however, drowned while swimming in the pond, the official said. The fire brigade has recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem, he said.

The National Green Tribunal has granted two weeks time to the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a detailed report on the total amount of hazardous waste generated by the state's industrial units and the agencies authorised for its collection, transportation and disposal. A bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim also asked the Uttar Pradesh government and the state pollution control board to furnish information about the capacity of the waste treatment plants. On August 29, 2017, the green court had directed all the states to file a detailed response about the agencies authorised to collect, transport, dispose of the hazardous waste as per the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have launched rescue operations in rain-soaked Vasai taluka in Palghar district neighbouring Mumbai which witnessed 240 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ended this morning. Two persons were killed and six others injured when a MUV in which they were travelling rammed into a stationary truck in Bihar's Samastipur district, police said today. The incident occurred on NH 28 near Rupauli village when driver of the MUV lost control over it and rammed into a stationary truck late last night, they said. The deceased have been identified as Ramlal Choudhary (62) and Mamta Devi (35), Musrigharari police station SHO Parmanand Lal Karn said.
