4 killed, 17 injured as lightning strikes crematorium

Four persons were killed and 17 others injured as lightning struck a crematorium site in a village of Aurangabad district today, police said. All the victims had come to the crematorium site at Dumuhan village accompanying the body of the chairman of an agriculture cooperative association. "Four persons were killed and 17 others injured when lightning struck the Dumhuhan crematorium under Obra police station area. The condition of two of the injured was stated to be serious," Daudnagar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Raj Kumar Tiwary said. It started raining heavily and lightning struck the site when a group of people gathered at Dumuhan crematorium where the body of Ramesh Dubey, chariman of the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society of Kara Panchayat, had been consigned to flames, Tiwary said. Altogether 21 injured persons were taken to Aurangabad Sadar Hospital where four persons died, he said. The rain, however, could not douse the pyre, an eye witness said.

TN CM rushes accident victim in his convoy ambulance to

Chief Minister K Palaniswami today rushed a man injured in a road accident, to a hospital in an ambulance that was part of his convoy and directed authorities to render all support to him, police said. When Palaniswami, after participating in a party event at Krishnagiri, was returning to the city, he told officials to stop his car when he spotted an accident on the highway (at Vadassery near Ambur in Vellore district). It was found that the man sustained injuries in the mishap involving a two-wheeler and a mini cargo van. Palaniswami directed officials to immediately rush the injured man to a hospital in the convoy ambulance and render all help.

Prez, PM condole deaths in Uttarakhand bus accident

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today conveyed their condolences to the families of those killed in a bus accident in Uttarakhand's Pauri district. At least 48 people were killed and 10 injured when an overloaded private bus fell into a 200-metre deep gorge near Gween village in the district. The bus was on its way to Ramnagar, according to the state police. "Very sad to learn about the tragic bus accident in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Rescue efforts are on and local authorities are doing their utmost to help. My condolences to the bereaved facilities and best wishes to those injured," Kovind said on Twitter. 1 killed, 3 injured in truck-tempo collision

A teenager was killed and three others were injured after their tempo collided head-on with a truck here, police said today. The accident took place last night in Muhammadabad area of the district. The deceased was identified as Riyaz (17), the police said, adding that his body was later sent for postmortem. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

48 killed as 'overloaded' bus falls into gorge in Pauri district

A private bus fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Pauri district this morning killing at least 48 people and injuring 10 others, police said. The "overloaded" bus was carrying 58 passengers, they said. "The accident occurred near Gween village, close to Dhumakot, when the bus on way to Ramnagar fell into a 200 metre deep gorge killing 45 persons on the spot and leaving 13 injured," Pauri SP Jagat Ram Joshi told PTI on the phone. The accident took place at around 8.30 AM, he said. Three more succumbed to injuries later during the day at the PHC, Dhumakot, where the injured were rushed after rescue teams reached the spot, Joshi said. Two critically injured were referred to Ramnagar while eight were under treatment at Dhumakot, the SP said. Though the exact cause of the accident was not yet known, the bus was carrying passengers much beyond its capacity, he said. Federal Aviation Administration to conduct DGCA audit this month

The Federal Aviation Administration will be carrying out an audit of Indian regulator DGCA starting from July third week, a senior official said. The exercise by the US aviation watchdog would also come at a time when the country saw a deadly chartered plane crash that snuffed out five lives last week. The team from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is arriving here on July 15. The audit would commence from July 16 and go on till July 20, a senior DGCA official told PTI. According to the official, the audit would cover three key areas -- operations, airworthiness and pilots' licensing mechanism. The FAA audit comes months after a comprehensive safety oversight audit by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in November last year. Since 2013, this would be the third audit of the domestic aviation regulator by the FAA. Ghatkopar plane crash: UY Aviation claims it had necessary

Two days after the husband of the co-pilot of the small plane which crashed in suburban Ghatkopar questioned the air-worthiness of the ill-fated plane belonging to the UY Aviation, the company today said that all "necessary" requirements and "approvals" were in place. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today conveyed his condolences to the families of those killed in a bus accident Uttarakhand's Pauri district. Mild earthquake in Haryana's Sonepat, tremors felt in Delhi-NCR

Mild tremors were felt in the Delhi-NCR and some other parts other parts of north India after an earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter Scale hit Haryana's Sonepat district and its adjoining areas. According to the India Metrological Department, the earthquake hit Sonepat, which is around 40 KM from the national capital, at 3.37 PM today. There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property from anywhere, officials said. The tremors, which lasted for a few seconds, were felt in Sonepat and several adjoining districts of Haryana, besides the National Capital Region and New Delhi.

British mountaineers rescued by Pak Army

Two British mountaineers stuck in a snow avalanche at the more than 19,000 feet high Ultar Sar Peak near the Hunza Valley of Gilgit Baltistan have been rescued.The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Sunday that pilots of the Pakistan Army rescued British climbers Bruce Normand and Miller Timothy.ISPR Director General Major General Asif Ghafoor, however, said that a third mountaineer, an Australian identified as Christian Huber, had died.The Dawn said that the three mountaineers had begun their ascent in late May and had received permission to continue with their climb till the first week of July.The team was being managed by Higher Ground Expeditions, a tour operating company in Hunza Valley.

Cyclone barrels towards Japan's Okinawa

Okinawa residents braced for large waves and violent winds today after weather authorities warned of a fierce cyclone approaching the southern Japanese island. Typhoon Prapiroon was closing in on Okinawa's capital Naha today afternoon while packing gusts of up to 144 kilometres (90 miles) per hour, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. It was expected to draw close to the Okinawa island tonight through to the next morning before veering towards southwestern Japan and the Korean peninsula, the agency said. Large storms regularly strike Japan over summer and early autumn, often causing fatal landslides and flooding.

UK forecaster issues 1st ever thunderstorm alert

Britain's Met Office weather forecasting service has issued its first thunderstorm alert in the agency's 164-year history. The official forecasters say torrential rain, hail and lightning are possible today in parts of southwest England and Wales as a long, dry heatwave persists in much of Britain. The forecasting service introduced the thunderstorm alert system last month along with a system to warn residents about expected lightning strikes. The Met Office is also warning of potential hazardous driving conditions in regions hit by the predicted storms. High temperatures and sunny conditions have brought tens of thousands of people to Britain's coastal towns and cities. London's many riverside pubs have also been filled with revelers, some buoyed by England's strong World Cup performance so far.

BJP MLA accuses Banda SP of 'patronising' sand mafia, 'conspiring to kill him'

A BJP MLA from Tindwari assembly constituency here has accused Banda district superintendent of police of patronising local sand mafia and posing threat to his life through them. MLA Brijesh Kumar Prajapati made the allegations against the woman police officer Shalini in a Facebook post yesterday. "SP Shalini is involved in illegal sand mining in the district. One killed, five injured in motorcycle-car collision in Muzaffarnagar

One person was killed and five people injured in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a car on the Budhana-Baraut Road in Muzaffarnagar district, police said today. The accident took place last evening when the motorcycle and the car, which were coming from opposite directions, rammed into each other, the police said. The motorcycle driver, identified as Pradeep (32), was killed in the accident, while his wife, Minu (29), and three children were injured, they added. The car driver, Ashok, was also injured in the accident, the police said.

Fire breaks out at Siri Fort Auditorium

A fire broke out on the ground and first floors of the Siri Fort Auditorium today, a senior officer from the Delhi Fire Service said. A call about the blaze was received at 11:38 am and 15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, he said. The fire was doused at 12:35 pm, the officer said. No casualties were reported.
