An Indian soccer fan, who was in Russia for the World Cup, has been killed in a car crash near the tournament host city Sochi, an Indian official said today, the first reported death of a FIFA visitor in the country. The accident took place yesterday when Portugal was trounced by Uruguay in one of the first games of the knockout stages of the tournament. An Indian citizen was killed in the accident in the Kuban region, an Indian Embassy official told PTI over phone. The official said that the Embassy is in touch with the victim's family. The Maharashtra government's flagship water conservation scheme claims to have rejuvenated water bodies and created an additional storage potential, in a state where some parts perennially face a drought-like situation. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the credit for the scheme's "success" goes to the huge public participation, and expressed hope that drought would soon become a thing of the past for the state. The micro-irrigation project, called 'Jalyukt Shivar', involves deepening and widening of streams, construction of cement and earthen stop dams, and digging of farm ponds, to make the state free of drought by next year. Two persons were killed and three injured when a speeding car collided with a container in suburban Bhandup early this morning, police said. The accident took place on the Bhandup flyover on the Eastern Express Highway when a group of five friends was heading for Thane in a car, a police official said. Driver of the car lost control on the flyover. The car dashed the road divider, jumped over it and collided with a container coming from the opposite direction, he said. Three persons were killed when a huge boulder, loosened by monsoon rains, rolled down a mountain and hit an SUV in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Siang district today, police said. The Punjab government today said it has instructed all the district authorities to ensure mandatory display of food safety boards by eateries and food business operators. Disclosing this, an official spokesperson said under the existing provisions of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, it is mandatory to display the true copy of the licence at a prominent place at all times within the premises where the Food Business Operator carries on the food business. He said it has been noticed that usually, the FSSAI licence number is not visible to the consumers. Thus, to change the overall consumer perceptibility and to strengthen food safety, the Punjab government has directed the district authorities to ensure that Food Safety Display Boards (FSDBs) are being displayed by various food businesses operators in their jurisdiction, spokesman said.

Panic gripped passengers of the Amritsar- Lalkuan express today when some of them saw smoke inside one of the compartments of the train at Ambala Cantt railway station. As the locomotive reached the station at around 11:30 am, the passengers noticed smoke emanating from near the toilet of the compartment. They immediately raised an alarm, officials said. Upon inspection, the source of origin of the smoke was found to be a dustbin near one of the lavatories. The railway officials suspected that someone might have thrown a cigarette in the dustbin without putting it out. The train, scheduled to leave for Yamunanagar was delayed by half an hour, officials added.
A Pakistani official says one member of a three-man expedition has died in an avalanche on a more than 7,000-meter high mountain in northern Pakistan. Karrar Haidri, secretary of Alpine Club of Pakistan, said today that Austrian mountaineer Christian Huber was killed when an avalanche hit the climbers' tent Friday night during a strong storm at a height of 5,900 meters (6,455 yards) on Ultar Sar Peak in the Hunza Valley.
