9 dead in road mishap in AP, CM expresses condolence

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday expressed condolence to the family of the people who lost their lives in a road accident in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool.Naidu also discussed the issue with the Kurnool district collector and Superintendent of Police and asked them to necessary action at the earliest.The APSRTC chairman Carla Ramaiah and Managing Director Surendra Babu also expressed condolence on the accident.Nine people died in the incident which took place earlier in Somayajulapalle village of Kurnool district when an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus hit an auto which was coming from the wrong side.There were 13 passengers travelling in the auto, who were going to a hospital for medical treatment when the incident took place.Seven people died on the spot, while two lost their lives in hospital.All the deceased are old people suffering from ailments and were going to visit a local doctor in Mahanandi, said the police.Apart from ...

7 out of 9 Indians swept in flash flood rescued by Nepali Army

The Nepali Army rescued seven out of nine Indians swept in the flash floods in Chitlang- Thankot route of Kathmandu.The Nepali Army took to their Facebook handle on Sunday to inform about the same."On 9th Asar, 2075 (23rd June 2018) the sudden rainfall triggering flash flood, in which 9 Indian en route back from the Chandragiri Hills through Chitlang-Thankot walkways, were swept away. Out of 9, 7 have been rescued unharmed by the team deployed from Bridging Division of the Nepali Army," read the post.The incident took place when the Indians were returning back from the Chandragiri Hills, esteemed Tourism and Religious site in the outskirts of Kathmandu."After the rescue operation the people were handed over to the Metropolitan Police Office, Thankot after providing them primary treatment," the post added.The post did not mention the whereabouts of the remaining three people. Also, the Nepali Army did not state the name and the residence of the victims.

IB official killed in road accident in Sukma district

An Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer was killed and three others injured when their SUV collided with a truck in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Sukma district today, police said. The incident took place this evening near Ramaram village on National Highway 30 when the victims were heading to Sukma town from Kerlapal village, a local police official told PTI. As per the preliminary report, three IB officials, alongwith another person, were visiting Kerlapal for official work. On the way back, their SUV collided with a truck, leaving one of the officials dead on the spot and three others injured, the police official said. He identified the deceased as Assistant Central Intelligence Officer Umakant Singh who hailed from Uttar Pradesh. Fire in building in south Mumbai's Charni Road, one dead

A fire broke out in the evening today in a building in south Mumbai's Charni Road area and eight fire engines were rushed for firefighting operations, an official said. He said that the fire, which broke out around 6pm, was confined to the second and third floor of the ground plus three storey Kothari House situated close to Central Plaza cinema. A senior Fire Brigade official said that a person, appearing to be in his mid-thirties, was found unconscious on the third floor of the building and was rushed to a hospital nearby where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The deceased has not been identified as yet, he added. He said that the building had shops on the ground floor and a pre-school operating from the floors above. Five killed in wall collapse in Arunachal Pradesh

At least five people, all of them labourers, were buried alive when a retaining wall of an under-construction building collapsed and fell over them at Donyi Colony here today, officials said. The retaining wall of the under-construction building collapsed at around 6 am due to incessant rainfall in the last two days, the Disaster Management Secretary, Bidol Tayeng, said. All the labourers were residents of Biswanath Chariali in Assam's Biswanath district, an official said. State police personnel along with a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel undertook rescue operation since 7.30 am, and after hours, retrieved the bodies in the evening, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Itanagar Capital Complex, Prince Dhawan, said. The disaster management secretary said that the state government would give ex-gratia to the families of the deceased.

Assam CM announces Rs 100-cr package for flood-hit Barak Valley

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today announced a Rs 100-crore package for relief and rehabilitation of the flood-hit people of three districts of the Barak Valley, where the situation remained grim. A report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) today said nearly two lakh people are still reeling under the deluge in six districts -- Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi. Twenty-four people have died in the floods in the state, including three in landslides. The ASDMA said Karimganj is the worst-affected district with more than 1.25 lakh people hit by the deluge, followed by Cachar where over 27,000 people have been hit. At present, 394 villages are under water and 3,100 hectares of crop areas have been damaged, it said. The authorities are running 133 relief camps and distribution centres in four districts, where 27,954 people have taken shelter, the report said. Lightning kills 3 in Bihar's Katihar district

Three farm labourers were killed while another person received burn injuries when lightning struck them in Bihar's Katihar district today. Falka police station SHO Ravindra Kumar said that the deceased have been identified as Ravindra Rishi (38), Arjun Rishi (35) and Chandra Deo Rishi (36) while tractor driver Mohammad Badrul (41) received burn injuries when lightning struck them this evening during heavy rain in the village. The deceased were residents of Goabari village under Magheli panchayat while the tractor driver is the resident of Dayalpur village of the district, SHO said adding that the injured has been taken to Purnea for treatment. The incident occurred when the three labourers went to an agricultural field and it suddenly started raining heavily following which they took shelter under a tractor trolley when lightning struck. Katihar Sub-Division Officer (SDO) Niraj Kumar announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the victims' families.

Lightning kills 5 in West Bengal

Five persons were killed and seven others injured in incidents of lightning strikes in Nadia and Bankura districts of West Bengal today, police said. While three farmers were killed and five others injured at Gajna in Nadia district, two persons were killed and two others injured in the state's Bankura district, the police said. In Nadia district, the three farmers died when they were working in a field during rain and thunderstorm. When they were taken to the Krishnaganj rural hospital, the three were declared brought dead, a police officer said. The five injured were admitted to the Shaktinagar hospital, a police officer said. In Bankura district a 65-year-old woman, a resident of Birsing village, was killed in a lightning strike when she was working in a field, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bankura, Sukhendu Hira, said. Fire breaks out in building in south Mumbai's Charni Road

A fire broke out in the evening today in a building in south Mumbai's Charni Road area and eight fire engines were rushed for firefighting operations, an official said. He said that the fire, which broke out around 6pm, was confined to the second and third floor of the ground plus four storey Kothari House situated close to Central Plaza cinema. There are no reports of any casualty as yet and firefighting and search operations continue, the official added. Naxals torch bus near CRPF camp in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur

Naxalstodaytorcheda bus about a kilometre away from a CRPF camp in Timapur in Chhattisgarhs Bijapur district after asking its passengers to alight, police said. The incident occurred at around 6 pm and the private buswas on its way to Basaguda from Jagdalpur, an official told PTI. Three dead as car hits road divider near Wani

Three persons including two women were killed near Wani in the district this afternoon when their car rammed into a road divider, police said. The driver of the car lost control while trying to avoid head-on collision with a speeding truck, and hit the divider, police said. The deceased were identified as Shashikala Pandharinath Kubde (50), Pramila Aswale (45) and driver Prashant Deorao Khade (27), all residents of Jain Layout in Wani town. Five others were injured and were shifted to Chandrapur Government Medical College Hospital, said head constable Anant Irfate of Wani police station. The passengers in the car were going to attend a wedding in Wani, he said. "We have arrested truck driver Rajendra Nakshane under section 304 (A) of IPC (causing death by negligence)," he added.

Entire rural area of Punjab declared open defecation free: Pb minister

Entire rural area of Punjab has been declared open defecation free (ODF), Water Supply and Sanitation Minister Razia Sultana said here today. She said that under 'Swachh and Swasth Punjab Mission' her department has been able to get all the rural areas of the state --13,726 villages in 147 blocks of 22 districts -- declared open defecation free. "Cross verification of ODF status in these villages is under progress," she said, according to an official release. Sultana said under the flagship Tandarust Punjab mission, the department of Water Supply and sanitation has been entrusted to supply safe water, reduce open defecation and regularly monitor water quality in the rural areas of the state. She explained that while working on these targets, the department has launched a behavioural change campaign to sensitise people about ill effects of the open defecation and create demand for safe sanitation. Flood situation improves in Assam; CM visits Cachar district

The flood situation in Assam improved today even as nearly two lakh people are still reeling under the deluge in six districts, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said. The six districts are -- Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi. So far, 24 people have died in the floods in the state, including three in landslides. As per the report issued by the ASDMA, Karimganj is the worst affected district with more than 1.25 lakh people hit by the deluge, followed by Cachar with over 27,000 people. Currently, 394 villages are under water and 3,100 hectares of crop areas have been damaged, the ASDMA said. 1 killed, 4 injured in accident in Rajasthan

A man was killed and four others were injured today when a car overturned in Jaipur rural area, police said. The speeding car overturned while attempting to save collision with an unidentified vehicle moving ahead of it in the Kaladera area, they said. The man, identified as Nanuram Yadav (25), who was travelling in the car, was killed and four others were injured, Station House Officer Kaladera police station Roop Narayan said. He said that the body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem and the injured were discharged after primary treatment. A case was registered against the car driver, the SHO said.

Train hits buffer at Ranaghat station, motorman suspended

An EMU local today hit the buffer at Ranaghat station after overshooting the platform, but there was no injury to anyone as the train was at a very slow speed, an Eastern Railway spokesman said. The motorman (driver) of the Sealdah-Ranaghat train has been put under suspension, pending completion of inquiry into the accident, Divisional Railway Manager, Sealdah, P Dansana said.
