Police: 25 injured in building explosion in Germany

German police say that 25 people have been injured, four of them severely, when an explosion destroyed a building in the western city of Wuppertal. Police say the explosion rocked the several-story building shortly before midnight Saturday with a large noise, scaring people in surrounding homes so much they ran out into the street in a panic. Fire broke out in several different parts of the house and firefighters had trouble dousing the flames because parts of the building kept collapsing. They were able to rescue four severely injured from inside the building. Another 21 people were slightly injured and treated by emergency staff at the scene. Police said Sunday they were still trying to get the fire under control. They are investigating the cause of the explosion.

Toxic fish continues to haunt Kerala; 6,000 kg seized

In a major haul, 6,000 kg of fish, preserved in toxic chemical Formalin, was seized at the border check post of Walayar in northern Palakkad district today. The state Food Safety department officials foiled the attempt to ferry the chemical-mixed fish from Andhra Pradesh during a raid carried out as part of the 'Operation Sagar Rani,' a drive launched to ensure safety and hygiene at fish handling and distribution centres. As many as 6000 kg of prawns, brought in 45 lorries, was found mixed with Formalin, officials said. Last week, 12,000 kg of toxic fish, containing Formalin, was confiscated during raids in the state. Formalin is used to preserve dead bodies and prevent its decay in mortuaries. The widespread use of the deadly chemical now-a-days in preservation of fish, fruit and other food items is posing a great threat to public health. IndiGo flight develops crack in windshield, returns to Kolkata

A Bengaluru-bound IndiGo flight returned to Kolkata today after developing a crack in the windshield, shortly after take-off, an Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said. The IndiGo flight, with 168 passengers on board, made its way back to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here, a little over 15 minutes after take-off. "On Sunday... at around 1015 hrs Indigo 6E345 Kolkata-Bengaluru with 178 passengers on board returned due to a windshield crack. It landed safely at around 1034 hrs," the AAI official said. A statement from IndiGo said the aircraft had to return to Kolkata, owing to inclement weather in the morning. Two constables killed in road accident

Two police constables were killed in a road mishap on the national highway 27 near Raiganj today, the police said. The accident occurred when the front tyre of their car burst and the vehicle hit a culvert killing the two constables. One of them was driving the car. The policemen were coming from Purulia to Jalpaiguri on transfer, they said.

Three killed in lightning in Nadia

Three farmers were killed and five others injured when lightning struck them at Gajna in Nadia district today, the police said. The incident occurred when the farmers were working in a field during rain and thunderstorm. When the victims were brought to the Krishnaganj rural hospital, three persons were declared brought dead. The five injured were admitted to the Shaktinagar hospital, the police said.

8 coaches of goods train derailed in Chhattisgarh

At least eight coaches and engine of a goods train derailed in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district today.The train coaches fell off a bridge after being derailed between Bhansi and Kamalur area.Naxals' involvement is suspected behind this accident.However, there is no report of any loss of life or injury in the incident.Police are investigating the matter.

Bodies of students who drowned in Krishna river recovered

The bodies of the four students, who drowned in the Krishna River at Pavitra Sangamam here on Saturday, have been recovered.The four individuals, namely Srinath (19), Praveen (18) and Chaitanya (18) and Rajkumar (19), were second-year engineering students of the MIC engineering college.On Saturday, Vijaya Krishnan, Joint Collector, Krishna district, informed that one student tried to get down into the river, but accidentally slipped and was washed away. Train hit a buffer at Ranaghat station

An EMU local today hit the buffer at Ranaghat station after overshooting the platform, but there was no injury to anyone as the train was at a very slow speed, an Eastern Railway spokesman said. The suburban local train from Sealdah was to terminate at Ranaghat and was travelling at 5 km per hour when it hit the buffer at the station in Eastern Railway's Sealdah Main section at 7.40 am. "There was no injury to anyone or damage to the train owing to its slow speed," ER spokesman R N Mahapatra said, adding that a man was detained for allegedly distracting the motorman (driver) of the train. Goods train wagons fall off bridge after Naxals uproot tracks

The engine and eight wagons of a goods train derailed and fell off a bridge on the Kirandul-Visakhapatnam route in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district early today after Naxals removed tracks to disrupt rail traffic, police said. No casualty was reported in the incident. "The incident occurred when Maoists uprooted tracks between Bhansi and Kamaloor, leading to derailment of its engine and eight wagons that fell off a bridge on a small rivulet," Dantewada Superintendent of Police Kamlochan Kashyap told PTI. The train, loaded with iron ore, was on its way to Visakhapatnam from Bacheli, he said, adding the incident occurred around 1 AM in the forests near Kamloor, located about 450 km from Raipur. After receiving information, a team of security personnel and railway officials rushed to the spot to restore services, the SP said. 9 killed in auto-bus collision in AP

Nine persons were killed and four others injured when an autorickshaw and a bus collided at Somayajulapalle in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh early today, police said. The autorickshaw was coming on the wrong side when the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation bus hit it on the Kurnool-Nandyal main road, police and the corporation said. There were around 13 passengers in the seven-seater autorickshaw which was going to Mahanandi. Seven of them were killed on the spot while two others succumbed to injuries in a hospital in Kurnool. The four injured, including the auto driver, had been admitted to the government hospital in Kurnool, a senior police official said. Bangladesh: Rains wreak havoc at Rohingya camps

Rains in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar have wreaked havoc at the Rohingya camps, leading to an increase in waterborne diseases and damaging infrastructure in the area.Humanitarian agencies in the region are still figuring out where to relocate these refugees who are living in the areas which are at the risk of landslides.According to the Inter-Sector Coordination Group (ISCG) weekly situation report for June 14-21, the monsoon rains brought 95mm of rainfall, Dhaka Tribune reported.In totality, 116 shelters have been damaged in the reporting period.Over 700 people were affected by the rains, of which 55 people were affected by landslides, 234 by floods, 425 by wind and storms, and 13 by water logging. Fire breaks out in Delhi factory

A fire broke out in a factory today in outer Delhi's Udyog Nagar, an officer from the Delhi Fire Service said. No one was injured in the blaze. A call was received at 4.50 pm about the fire and 10 firetenders were rushed to the spot, the officer said. Later, as the fire intensified, more vehicles were rushed and the firefighting operation is still underway, he added. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained though it is suspected that a short-circuit triggered the fire, the officer said. Earlier in the day, a fire broke out due to a short-circuit in an electric pole in southwest Delhi's Sagarpur and one firetender was rushed to the spot. The fire was doused within a few minutes.

Labourer killed, 5 others injured in wall collapse in Delhi

A 42-year-old labourer died and five others were injured after a wall of an under-construction basement collapsed today in South Delhi's Greater Kailash 2, police said. A senior officer from the Delhi Fire Service said a call was received at 12.10 pm about the collapse and three firetenders were rushed to the spot. The police said they were informed that six labourers were injured in the wall collapse and were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where Satish was declared dead, they added. The other injured men were identified as Narayan (48), Durga Majhi (38), Kapil (27), Ramswarup (50) and Ravi Mishra (35). The police said an inspection of the site revealed that the wall of the under-construction basement collapsed and debris fell on the labourers working there, they said. A case was registered and it was being probed whether the builder, along with the contractor had taken necessary permissions and whether required safety arrangements were in Delhi made.

Heart transported 323 km in 94 minutes, transplanted into girl

A live heart was transported from Aurangabad to Mumbai, a distance of 323.5 kilometres, in one hour and thirty-four minutes and was successfully transplanted into a 4-year-old girl. A statement from Fortis Hospital in suburban Mulund, where the transplant took place, said that the operation was successful and the girl, a resident of Jalna, was under observation. The hospital statement said that the live heart of a 13-year-old boy, who died in an road accident, was retrieved in Aurangabad's MGM Hospital yesterday from where it left for Aurangabad Airport at 1:50 pm. It reached the airport at 1:54pm covering the 4.8 kilometre distance in 4 minutes thanks to a green corridor set in place there, the hospital said. 25 Air India flights delayed due to software malfunction

Scores of Air India passengers were stranded at several airports across the country as a technical glitch in the airline's check-in software delayed 25 flights today, officials said. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha tendered apologies for the inconvenience caused to the passengers. Services remained affected for three hours from 12.10 PM to 3.10 PM, the airline said. While an Air India spokesperson told PTI that the departures of 23 flights were delayed by 15-30 minutes, the airline later tweeted putting the figure at 25 as passenger queues kept swelling at check-in counters. Some unconfirmed report suggested that some international services were also affected at the IGI Airport here.
