3 more dead; overall flood situation improves in Assam

The flood situation in Assam continued to improve today, although three more persons lost their lives, taking the death toll in flood-related incidents in the state to 24, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said. Over 3.67 lakh people in five districts were still reeling under the deluge, it added. According to the ASDMA, three persons died in flood-related incidents in the last 24 hours. Of the three, two died at Sadar and Katigorah in Cachar district respectively, while the third person died at Nilambazar in Karimganj district. With this, the death toll had gone up to 24, including three persons losing their lives due to landslides, in the first wave of floods this year, the ASDMA said. It added that over 3.67 lakh people were affected in Dhemaji, Hojai, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts. 3 killed in dumper-car collision

Three persons including a minor girl were killed and two others were injured in a collision between a dumper and a car in West Singhbhum district today, police said. The accident occurred on Noamundi-Jagannathpur road under Noamundi police station area when the dumper rammed into the four-wheeler, killing a child and a woman on the spot. Three seriously injured were taken to a hospital, where one of them succumbed to his injuries, police said. All the victims were occupants of the car which was on its way to Barbil in Odisha from Seraikela. The car was badly damaged under the impact of the collision, while the dumper was overturned, police said.

Couple killed in car accident in Rajasthan

A couple was killed and six others including a minor were injured today in a collision between two cars in Hanumangarh district of Rajatshan, police said. Virendra Bihani (48) and his wife Anita Bihani (43) died when their vehicle crashed with another car, they said. Six occupants of the other vehicle, including a child were injured in the mishap, they added. The bodies of the couple were handed over to family members after postmortem, police said.

4-hour blockade disrupts train service

A group of people squatted on the tracks at Mecheda railway station in East Midnapur district for over four hours following an accident today, disrupting train services, a South Eastern Railway official said. The blockade started at around 7.40 am after a cyclist was knocked down by Santragachi-Mecheda EMU Local on the tracks on platform no. 6. The man died on the spot. Around 10 up and down mail and express trains and 19 sub-urban EMU and passenger trains had to be detained at various stations, the official said. The affected down trains include Bengaluru-Guwahati Express, Tatanagar-Howrah Steel Express, Chennai Central- Santragachi AC Express, Purulia-Howrah Express and Asansol-Haldia Express. Besides, up trains such as Howrah-Digha Tamralipta Express, Howrah-Titlagarh Ispat Express, Howrah-Secunderabad Falaknuma Express, Shalimar-Bhojudih Aranyak Express, and Howrah-CSMT Duronto Express were detained, the official said. NGO forms committee to find causes of deaths on tracks

Thane District Railway Passengers Association has formed a 'safety committee' to find the causes of deaths on the suburban railway network, and suggest remedial measures. Founder president of the association Om Prakash Sharma today said, "The number of deaths on tracks on suburban network has grown year after year. Therefore, we felt the need to study its causes and suggest remedies." The committee consists of retired government servants, including former railway employees, judges and others, he said. "The members of the committee will visit the stations where maximum of accidents are reported," he added. As per the latest figures, over 3,000 people died on the tracks on the Central Railway and Western Railway in 2017, Gupta said adding, "This figure needs to be brought down and precious lives need to be saved.

DGCA probing altercation between AirAsia staff, passengers: Sinha

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is probing an incident in which passengers of an AirAsia India flight from Kolkata to Bagdogra got into an altercation with the airline staff after delay in departure, the civil aviation minister today said. Some passengers on the AirAsia India flight had yesterday an altercation with the airline staff over deplaning them after the flight was delayed by over four hours, a passenger had claimed. "DGCA is reviewing the incident and we will take appropriate follow up action," Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha tweeted this evening. Indian Oil Corporation Executive Director (West Bengal) Dipankar Ray, who was also travelling in the same flight, had complained of very "unprofessional and rude" behaviour from the airline staff. Flood situation improves in Assam's Hailakandi

The flood situation in Assam's Hailakandi has finally started to improve. The flood killed 20 people in the state.Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan said that the flood situation improved greatly and water went below the danger mark in all three major rivers."The situation has improved greatly. Three out of four circles are out of the water. Only 60,000 out of three lakh are still affected. There are people in only 31 relief camps out of 145 have as people have started returning to their homes," said Khan.However, the situation in Algapur district of Hailakandi did not improve."We have started damage assessment. Fire breaks out at peppermint godown in Chandni Chowk

A fire broke out at a peppermint godown in Chandni Chowk area this evening, injuring a fire operator, an official said. A call was received at 5.05 pm about the blaze in the godown and nine fire tenders were rushed to the spot, the official said. After the fire was doused by 6.55 pm, there was smoke observed in the godown following which two fire tenders were again rushed to the spot. However, it was doused within a few minutes, he said. Amit Rana,a fire operator, sustained 20 per cent burn injuries during the fire fighting operation.

AirAsia India staff accused of 'rude' behaviour; govt says will take appropriate action

Some passengers on a Bagdogra-bound AirAsia India flight have complained of ill treatment by the airline staff after the flight was delayed by more than four hours on Wednesday, prompting the civil aviation ministry to assure of "appropriate follow-up action". The incident took place on the flight from Kolkata after the passengers were allegedly asked to deplane after a delay of four-and-a-half hours as the plane had some technical snag.
