The opposition Congress today alleged the Assam government was not serious about updating the National Register of Citizens, a day after the NRC state coordinator said the deadline for the publication of the final draft "may be delayed" due to the flood situation. As per a Supreme Court order, the second draft of the NRC has to be released by June 30. "What we have understood is that the state coordinator of the NRC did not take the process seriously. The Assam government is also not taking it seriously despite it is done under direct supervision of the Supreme Court," Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora said. State-run SAIL today said it has supplied 60,000 tonnes steel for 111 km long Jiribam-Imphal broad gauge railway project in Manipur. The project is being constructed by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and once completed, it will be the tallest girder rail bridge in the world, Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) said in a statement. NFR is one of the 17 railway zones of Indian Railways. "SAIL has supplied around 60,000 tonnes of steel material for the 111-km-long Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal new broad gauge railway project," it said. The PSU has supplied mainly TMT rebars and structurals, hot-rolled (HR) plates and sheets, plate mill plates etc for the project from Durgapur, IISCO, Rourkela and Bokaro plants, SAIL said. "The first section involves the construction of 84 km railway line connecting Jiribam to Tupul which is on the verge of completion. The second section of 27 kms connecting Tupul to Imphal is expected to be completed by 2019," it added.

Three people, including a pregnant woman, were killed when an ambulance in which they were travelling overturned after being hit by a bus here in the wee hours today, a police official said. The 'Janani Express' ambulance (a government service to ferry pregnant women) was carrying the woman to a government hospital in Kailaras town near here around 3 am when the bus hit it, sub-divisional officer of police Sudhir Kushwaha said. As a result, the ambulance overturned killing the woman and two other people, he said. The deceased were identified as Suraksha Dhakad (22), her mother-in-law Gyaso Bai (55) and the ambulance driver, Bunty Dhakad (32), Kushwaha said. The pregnant woman's husband and another relative were injured in the accident. They were admitted to a hospital where they were undergoing treatment, he said. A fire broke out at two hotels in Charbagh near the Lucknow Junction railway station this morning, killing at least five people and critically injuring four, police said. As many as 55 people, including the hotel staff, were rescued, a senior police official said. The fire broke out at the adjacent hotels in Charbagh's Doodh Mandi area at 6 am, he said, adding there were around 60 people in the hotels at the time of the incident.
