Pre-monsoon showers lash city, 3 dead due to electrocution

Three persons including two children died due to electrocution as pre-monsoon showers lashed some parts of the city this evening. A release from the municipal corporation's disaster control room identified the deceased as Anil Yadav (32), Sara Khan (9) and Omkar Phadtare (10). Yadav and Khan died after coming in contact with live electric wire while walking down a road in Khindipada area in Bhandup West arond 8.30 pm. Omkar Phadtare and his friend received electric shock in Shivkripa Nagar area near Bhandup railway station. While Omkar died in hospital, his friend was seriously injured and was being treated. Bishwombhar Singh, director in-charge, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, Mumbai said pre-monsoon showers hit the the city and other parts of Maharashtra as well. "Monsoon is yet to arrive in the state. Pre-monsoon activities are currently seen in entire Maharashtra including Mumbai and Thane," he said. Pratt & Whitney engine issue returns, Indigo flight aborts takeoff

A Port Blair-bound Indigo flight from Kolkata today aborted takeoff at the last minute due to an engine problem, the latest case of glitches related to Pratt & Whitney engines. Indigo, however, sought to downplay the incident, saying the aircraft could not takeoff due to a "minor engine fault". The airbus A320 neo aircraft has been grounded for inspection. All passengers were accommodated in an alternative flight. "An IndiGo flight - 6E 972 enroute Kolkata-Port Bair was held at Kolkata this morning. During departure, a minor engine fault was noted by the pilot. In the interest of minimising the delay and passengers inconvenience, the pilot decided the deplane the passengers, and in the interim and alternative aircraft was arranged. CM reviews rain situation in Karna, orders relief work on war

As rains pounded many parts of Karnataka leaving a trail of destruction, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy today directed Chief Secretary K Ratna Prabha and other officials to undertake the relief work on a war footing. He directed the officials to remain alert round-the-clock and give updates on the situation and development to his office on a real time basis, an official release said. Kumaraswamy also held a meeting with the chief secretary and the deputy commissioners of the district and instructed them to ensure that fund crunch did not affect relief work. The chief secretary briefed him on the measures taken so far and said sufficient funds for relief work was available with all the deputy commissioners. One dead, girl missing after flash floods in Uttarakhand

A person was killed after the branch of a tree fell on him while search was on for a girl who was swept away by flash floods triggered by severe hailstorm in parts of Uttarakhand last evening. In Champawat district, the branch of a tree fell on a vehicle injuring one person, who died while being taken to the hospital. The hailstorm coupled with heavy rains triggered a flash flood in Uttarkashi where three children were swept away as muck inundated their home, the State Emergency Operation Centre here said. Two of them were rescued but a girl is still missing, it said. The hailstorm marked by high speed gusty winds lasted around half an hour and hit different parts of the state. Fouranimals were also killed in a hailstorm in Bumuch village of Chakkisain tehsil of Pauri district when two cowsheds were washed away. In Dehradun, the hailstorm uprooted trees at places such as Buddha Chowk, Sahastradhracrossing, Dwarka store Chowk, RTO office and RISPANA bridge. Several uprooted trees fell .

Water shortage situation eases in Shimla but protests continue

The acute water shortage plaguing Shimla for the past 15 days eased marginally today after the supply to the Himachal Pradesh capital was increased from 22.5 MLD to 28 MLD but protests over inadequate supply continued in several areas. Taking a serious note of alleged negligence in the supply of water, Irrigation and Public Health Minister Mahinder Singh ordered the suspension of Shimla Municipal Corporation SDO. Singh said the government would not tolerate any laxity by officials and take strict action against those found negligent. He said city residents are demanding the resignation of the Shimla mayor, deputy mayor and municipal commissioner. Meanwhile, residents of Kasumpti, Mahli, Jiwanu, Panthaghati and a few other colonies blocked roads in protest against inadequate water supply. Navy sends ship to Socotra island in Yemen to rescue 38 stranded Indians

Around 38 Indians are stranded in and around Socotra island in Yemen after a cyclone hit the area and the Indian Navy has launched an operation to rescue them. The Navy has already deployed its ship INS Sunayna as part of the 'operation Nistar' to evacuate the Indians. A Navy spokesperson said INS Sunayna, which was deployed in Western Arabian Sea, is now heading towards Socotra for the humanitarian and disaster relief (HADR) operation. "#HADR @indiannavy launches #OpNistar 2 evacuate around 38 stranded Indian nationals in/around Socotra. INS Sunayna mission deployed in W Arabian Sea has been diverted to reach off Socotra tomorrow. Indian seafarers stranded view cyclone Mekunu which hit that area few days back," the spokesperson tweeted. The cyclone Mekunu badly hit various parts of Oman and Socotra island.

Two students, including fmr Hry MLA son, die in road accident

Two students, including the son of a former Haryana MLA died in a road accident as their two-wheeler was hit by a vehicle near Dr Ambedkar National Memorial in Delhi, police said today. The victims, Akshat Kamboj, 24, and Vikhyat Pandit, 25, had pursued BA LLB course and were preparing for judiciary examinations, a senior police officer said. A call about the accident was received at Civil Lines police station around 3 AM today. The policemen took the duo who were lying on the road to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead, he said. Kamboj hailed from Karnal and Pandit from Palwal in Haryana. "Both were BA LLB and were taking coaching classes for judiciary exam in Mukharjee Nagar," the officer said. Akshat was son of a former MLA from a constituency in Karnal district. He had completed his degree from an institution in Sonipat last year, police said. A case has been registered and efforts are being made to identify the offending vehicle and its driver.

3 members of a family killed in road mishap on way to Puri

Three members of a family were killed and two others injured in a road accident on NH 60 near Rupsa police station, about 15 km from here today, police said. The family was on its way to Puri from West Bengal when their car hit a wall on the side of a bridge, the officer-in-charge of Rupsa police station S C Mahallik said. The victims were rushed to the district headquarter hospital, where doctors declared three of them brought dead. The dead have been identified as Kasinath Sengupta (65) his wife Jayanti Sengupta (60) and their married daughter Shriya Sinha (35), the police said. The injured were Rana Sinha (40), who was driving the car and Abhinanda Sengupta (6). They are undergoing treatment.

Girl missing after flash floods in Uttarakhand

A girl was missing while two children were rescued in Uttarkashi district after they were swept away by a severe hailstorm coupled with heavy rains and flash floods in parts of Uttarakhand late last evening. The hailstorm killed four animals in Pauri district while in Dehradun, it uprooted several trees which fell on electric poles disruptingpower supply in the city for hours. Indian-origin boy killed in UK road collision

An eight-year-old Indian-origin boy has been killed in a deadly road crash on a UK highway. Dev Naran was pronounced dead at the scene of a collision between a truck and a car on the M6 motorway near Birmingham on Thursday. "He excelled at school and wanted to become a doctor. He looked after his brother Neel, who suffered brain damage at birth," his parents said in a statement. A man and a woman travelling with Naran in the car were taken to hospital with serious injuries, where they both remain in a stable condition. West Midlands Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident as the 62-year-old driver of the truck, who escaped uninjured, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Couple crushed under wheels of truck

A bike borne couple was crushed to death by a speeding truck on NH-80 in Kahalgaon police station area of Bhagalpur district, police said today. The incident occurred near Pakartalla village on NH 80 late last night when the two were going to a relative's place at Kahalgaon, Additional Superintendent of Police Dilnawaz Ahmad said. The truck hit the bike head on and dragged it a few metres before veering off to a field, the ASP said adding that the truck driver fled after the accident. The victims were identified as Pankaj Singh (43) and Sujata Singh (35), residents of Salampur village in Banka district. Local people blocked the NH-80 for two hours in protest against the accident. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.

Two cousins killed in road accident

Two cousins were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a truck near Rampura villlage, about 40 km from here, on the Hisar-Delhi National Highway, police said today. The cousins, Ravinder Sharma (32) and Deepak Sharma (28), were residents of Pur village in Bhiwani district, they said, adding that the incident took place last night. According to the police, the duo was going towards Barwala when the truck, coming from Rohtak, hit their bike. The truck driver fled the scene after the accident, police said.

17 killed in dust storm in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh was hit by another deadly dust storm that claimed 17 lives and left 11 persons injured last evening. A UP government spokesperson today said that most of the deaths were caused due to falling of trees and house collapse. Moradabad bore the maximum brunt of the storm, with as many as seven deaths reported from the district, followed by three deaths from Sambhal, the state government spokesperson said. Two deaths were reported each from Badaun, Muzaffarnagar and Meerut, while one death was reported from Amroha, he said. Five persons were injured in Amroha, three in Moradabad, two in Muzaffarnagar and one in Badaun. The state government has directed all district magistrates to distribute relief within 24 hours. Nursing staff observes 1 hr token strike, hold protests in Jammu

The nursing staff in a government medical college and its associated hospitals here today observed an hour-long token strike and staged a protest in support of their long pending demands, including removal of pay anomalies. The nursing staff went on an-hour long strike at 11 am and also assembled at the lawns of the government-run Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh hospital at Shalamar in the heart of the city and staged a peaceful protest. Small industries seek govt help to tide over loss, damage from

The Kanara small industries association has requested Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to bail out small entrepreneurs whose businesses have been 'gravely hit' by the devastation caused by heavy rains and flooding in the city on May 29. In a letter to the Chief Minister, the association president Gaurav Hegde said the heavy rains and floods had caused huge losses to the tune of Rs 10 crore to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) already reeling under the impact of demonetisation and GST. The natural calamity had turned out to be a big blow to these industries, he said and wanted the government to extend help by providing adequate compensation to recover from the losses. Thunderstorm claims 15 lives in UP
