Badrinath National Highway closed due to heavy rains

The Badrinath National Highway was closed at two places on Friday due to minor landslides following heavy rains in parts of Uttarakhand last night.The closing of the highway has caused disruption among the pilgrims visiting the holy shrine.A team of Uttarakhand Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have reached the spot.The Highway has been closed for the second time in a month due to adverse weather condition.Pilgrimage to the holy shrines was halted earlier on May 8 due to incessant snowfall.

MACT awards Rs 40 lakh compensation to kin of accident victim

The Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has directed a man and an insurance company to collectively pay Rs 40 lakh compensation to the family members of a BMC employee, who died in a road accident in 2016. MACT member and District Judge K D Vadane in the order passed on May 24, directed Suresh Mangaldas Patil and ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd to pay the compensation along with 8 per cent interest per annum from the date of the filing of the claim. The deceased, Maruti Raghunath Thakare (45), a resident of Ghotawade in Bhiwandi, worked in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as a labourer and earned a salary of Rs 24,246, the claim filed by his wife Manisha and three children said. On May 19, 2016 evening, he was going home from Khadavali side on his motorcycle, when Patil's bike rammed him from behind near Dolare petrol pump on Mumbai-Nashik highway. Indonesia's Merapi volcano ejects towering column of ash

Indonesia's Mount Merapi has shot a towering plume of ash about 6 kilometers high in an eruption authorities said lasted 2 minutes. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said today the volcano's alert status, raised last month from the lowest level, is unchanged and a 3 kilometer no-go zone around the crater remains in force. It said the eruption at 8.20 a.m. caused no panic and nearby Adi Sucipto Yogyakarta International Airport is still open to flights. The mountain is about 30 kilometers from center of Yogyakarta city on the densely populated island of Java. About a quarter million people live within a 10 kilometer radius of the volcano. Merapi's last major eruption in 2010 killed 347 people.

Sterling K Brown joins Blake Lively's 'Rhythm Section'

"This Is Us" star Sterling K Brown is the latest actor to join the cast of Blake Lively-starrer "The Rhythm Section" as it resumes shooting. The production on the spy-thriller was halted in January after Lively, 30, suffered an injury on her hand during shooting for an action sequence in Dublin. Lively has fully recovered from the injury and production on the film is set to resume next month in Spain, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The details of the character that Brown, 42, will be playing are being kept under wraps. "The Handmaids Tale" director Reed Morano is directing the film, which also stars Jude Law. The film is an adaptation of British author Mark Burnells "Stephanie Patrick" novels and follows the story of a woman (Lively) who seeks to uncover the truth behind a plane crash that killed her family.

Centre approves construction of houses for urban poor

The Centre has approved construction of 1.5 lakh houses for urban poor under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.The Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said in a missive that latest approval entails an investment of Rs. 7,227 crore with central assistance of Rs. 2,209 crore.The approval was given in the 34th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee held here on Thursday.With the latest approval for construction of affordable houses, the cumulative figure under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has reached 47.52 lakh houses.Andhra Pradesh has sanctioned 56,512 houses, while Uttar Pradesh got 23,060, Madhya Pradesh 17,920, Jharkhand 14,526 and Maharashtra 13,506 houses.Other states for which houses were approved included Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Punjab and Assam.Under the Yojana, the ministry targets construction of 1.2 crore houses for urban poor by 2022.

CM reviews water situation in Shimla town

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur today reviewed the water supply situation here and also sought details from officials in this regard. Thakur took stock of the situation from officers through video conferencing. Officials apprised the chief minister that the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) has received 22.63 MLD water. The corporation has also received 1 MLD of water from Ghandal which was distributed to Krishna Nagar, Ram Bazar, Lower Bazar, Jakoo, Benmore, Engine Ghar, Sanjauli chowk, Dhalli and Mashobra, Bhattakufar and Shanti Vihar, Malyana and Sangti areas as per the time table, they said. Besides this, water supply through tankers has been ensured in hospitals, educational institutions and public toilets as per demand, the officials informed the chief minister. Govt approves construction of 1.5 lakh houses for urban poor

Naval chopper makes precautionary landing, crew safe

A naval helicopter today made a 'precautionary landing' near Arakkonam in the district following an engine warning alarm indication, but the two crew members were safe, defence officials said. "A Chetak helicopter of the Indian Navy had undertaken a precautionary landing at Veernaryana Puram village, about 13 km from Arakkonam after the pilot observed engine warning alarm indication," a PIB (Defence) release said. The helicopter, which took off from INS Rajali, was on a routine training sortie with two crew members onboard, it said, adding, the "crew and aircraft are safe." A technical team was sent from INS Rajali to the landing site for providing necessary assistance and the helicopter returned to the naval air station safely this evening, it said.

Isolated rain in some areas of UP, but heatwave in western part

Very light to moderate rain and thunderstorm occurred at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh but heatwave conditions continued to prevail in isolated parts of the western parts of the state. On Wednesday, day temperatures were below normal in Faizabad, Lucknow, Agra, Bareilly and Meerut divisions. Orai was the hottest place in the state, where mercury touched 46.5 degree Celsius, the MeT department said. The weather department also said that rain and thundershower are very likely at isolated places over the state on June 1 and June 2. On June 3 and June 4, weather is most likely to remain dry in western Uttar Pradesh, the meteorological department said.

5 die as car collides with truck in Haryana

Five people, including three women, were killed today when their car crashed head-on with a truck as they were travelling from Bilaspur to Karnal, police said. The crash, which reduced the car to a mangled heap of metal, took place near Samana Bahu, an official said. The dead bodies have been shifted to a hospital in Karnal for post-mortem and a case has been registered, they added.

UP: SP wrests Noorpur Assembly seat from BJP

Samajwadi Party candidate Naeemul Hasan won the Noorpur Assembly bypoll defeating nearest rival Avni Singh of the BJP by a margin of 5,662 votes. Hasan, who was supported by other opposition parties also, polled 94,875 votes while Avni Singh polled 89,213 votes, returning officer Dhruv Tripathi said. A bypoll was necessitated following the death of Avni Singh's husband BJP MLA Lokendra Singh Chauhan in a road accident in February.

Notices to 14 hospitals in Jalna for violation of rules

The health department has issued show-cause notices to 14 hospitals in the district for allegedly flouting norms, an official said today. The notices were sent after a committee headed by district civil surgeon M K Rathod conducted checks at 350 hospitals, nursing homes and sonography centres in Jalna, Bhokardan, Ambad and Partur municipal councils in the district. The operation was launched on May 1, the official said. "We paid surprise visits to 350 hospitals, including 67 sonography centres, and found that 14 of them did not follow the rules laid down under the Bombay Nursing Home Registration Act," Rathod said. "Show-cause notices have been issued to these hospitals. They will face action if they do take the necessary steps," he added. The committee checked whether the health centres conformed to the rules under Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, apart from the Bombay Nursing Home Registration Act.
