Ahead of the onset of the monsoon, the Odisha government has asked all the 30 district officials to be prepared for the possible flood and stock adequate food grains in remote areas which are prone to flood, official sources said today. The instructions were given by Special Relief Commissioner & Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Disaster Management) B P Sethi in a review meeting on the preparedness for the possible floods during the monsoon yesterday. The Additional District Magistrates (ADMs) and District Emergency Officers (DEOs) were present in the meeting, the sources said. The district authorities have been instructed to furnish their updated District Disaster Management Plan (DDMP) by June 10 for approval by the State Disaster Management Authority. After approval, the updated plans will be uploaded in the respective districts website, Sethi said. The Indian Air Force (IAF), through its 'Bambi Bucket' operation, is helping in containing a major fire which broke out in a rubber godown in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area, an official statement said today. A dense plume of smoke billowed from a burning truck and a godown in Khirki Extension area last night, causing panic among locals. "Around midnight, a request was received at HQ Western Air Command for containing a fire at Malviya Nagar. A MLH class helicopter airborne from Sarsawa did a recce and landed at Palam. Thereafter, the helicopter got airborne with bambi bucket to contain the fire," the statement by the IAF said. The helicopter filled water from Yamuna reservoir and poured it over the site. Four members of a family were crushed to death and as many others injured when an over 100-feet high minaret of a mosque collapsed on their house in Bhudwara village following a heavy storm. The incident took place last night when heavy storm hit the district followed by heavy rains and the minaret collapsed on the adjoining house belonging to one Aziulla claiming four lives. An appeal for rescue was instantly made from the mosque following which villagers rushed to the site and started removing debris. Gola Police pressed JCB machines into service to rescue those trapped under the debris and rushed the injured to the district hospital. The deceased were identified as Aziulla Qureshi (60), Junaid (17), Nazia (15) and Ilma (3), police said. Circle Officer Atul Sonkar said the septic tank of vegetable seller Heera Singh was being cleaned up, when gas started leaking from a chamber. The victims were shifted to the emergency ward of the SN Medical College late in the night. Three persons, Heera Singh and his two sons Yashpal and Hemant died. Half a dozen are still being treated. Neighbours and family members charged that there was a delay in rescue operations. A few lives could have been saved had the ambulance van been equipped with oxygen, a family member said.
