Jewar airport construction to start by year-end, says UP govt

The construction work for the proposed airport at Jewar, the second one in the national capital region, will start by year-end, Uttar Pradesh government said today. The state government has received in-principle approval from the Centre for the project and expects the airport to have a capacity to handle 60 lakh passengers annually by 2022-23. "After the green signal from the central government, the construction work for the much awaited second International airport in Delhi NCR region will commence by the end of 2018," Uttar Pradesh Civil Aviation Department said in a release. The airport at Jewar would help in easing the traffic at the Delhi international aerodrome. "Many sectors will benefit with the development of this airport and it will be really beneficial for the people of western Uttar Pradesh who have to travel more than 250 km for Delhi or Lucknow airports," Uttar Pradesh Civil Aviation Minister Nand Gopal Gupta said in the release. Ker wants higher financial assistance to address sea erosion

Kerala government today asked the Centre to increase the financial assistance to states for taking up relief measures and rehabilitation of people affected by sea erosion in coastal regions. ""The amount now extended is very minimal and the Centre should reimburse the amount spent by the states for rehabilitation of affected people," Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters after a cabinet meeting. He also said it was decided to give Rs.four lakhs each to those who lost their houses in the recent tidal wave attack in the state. Besides, an amount of Rs.50,000 and Rs.15,000 would be given for carrying out repairs of major and minor damage to houses respectively. " With a view to finding a permanent solution to the problems faced by coastal residents, he said the government planned to relocate people living in sea erosion prone areas. Ensure pipe water supply to each family in all towns : CM

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today directed the housing and urban development department to ensure supply of pipe water to each family in all towns and cities of the state by March 2019, officials said. The chief minister also directed the department to ensure increase per capita usage of drinking water to 70 litres in urban areas by March 2019. Patnaik, who gave the direction while presiding over a high level review meeting on status of urban pipe water supply programme, said the housing and urban development department would conduct house-to-house survey in all urban localities in the state and identify the families that have no pipe water facilities. Official sources said a total of 760 projects are being implemented in the state at a cost of Rs 3,596 crore to supply drinking water in urban local bodies of Odisha. Minor fire on Guj HC complex; none hurt

A minor fire broke out today in the premises of the Gujarat High Court here, a Fire officer said. Nobody was injured in the incident and the functioning of the high court was not affected, he said. The blaze was triggered by a short circuit in an electric panel outside the office of the bar association on the campus of the HC, said Additional Chief Fire Officer Rajesh Bhatt. "A short circuit caused a fire today in the corridor leading to the office of the bar association," said Bhatt. He said the blaze engulfed the electric panel, but was contained shortly before it could spread any further. Plumes of smoke could be seen emanating from a part of the high court complex. The fire caused panic among people visiting the premises.

India signs USD 210-mn loan pact with World Bank for MP roads

India has signed a USD 210 million loan agreement with the World Bank to improve rural connectivity in Madhya Pradesh, the finance ministry said today. The project will cover 10,510 km stretch of rural roads in Madhya Pradesh that fall under the Chief Minister's Gram Sadak Yojana (CMGSY) programme. Of this 10,000 km will be upgraded from existing gravel to bituminous surface roads, while 510 km of new roads will be built to the same bituminous surface standard. "The Government of India, the Government of Madhya Pradesh and the World Bank today signed a USD 210 million loan agreement for the Madhya Pradesh Rural Connectivity Project," the finance ministry said in a statement. Man, daughter killed by speeding motorcycle in UP

A man and his daughter standing by the roadside were killed after being hit by a speeding motorcycle in Balia district of Uttar Pradesh today, police said. Kuldev (55) and his daughter Asha (35) were waiting for a public transport at Ferozpur village under Rasra police station when the accident took place, they said. Dozens injured after earthquake in southeast Turkey

Turkish officials say dozens were slightly injured after an earthquake in southeastern Turkey, The earthquake struck Samsat village in the s province of Adiyaman early Tuesday at 3.34 a.m. local time (0034 GMT). The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.2 at 10 kilometers deep. Turkey's health minister said of those injured, 35 were still receiving treatment, according to official Anadolu news agency. The regional governor said the injuries were caused as people fled their homes in panic. Anadolu quoted victim Zeynep Berk whose house collapsed on her and four others. Bangladesh protesters demand justice five years after factory disaster

Hundreds of people staged tearful tributes today at Rana Plaza, scene of one of the world's worst industrial disasters in 2013 when the complex of clothing factories collapsed and killed at least 1,130 people. Death toll in Toronto truck collision rises to 10

Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes off Nicaragua's coast

The US Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 has struck in the Pacific off the coast of Nicaragua. The temblor was centered about 165 kilometers west-northwest of the capital of Managua and 64 kilometers west of the town of Chinandega.
