14-year-old Indian girl killed, 19 Indians injured in accident in Iran

A 14-year-old Indian girl was killed and 19 Indians were injured when their bus met with an accident in Iran, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said today. Twenty Indian pilgrims were heading to the city of Qom, considered holy in Shia Islam, last night when the accident. "I have got the report from Indian Embassy in Tehran. A bus carrying 20 Indian pilgrims on way to Qom met with an accident last night. Unfortunately, we lost Ms. Kulsum Fatima aged 14 years because of head injuries," Swaraj tweeted. Another national named Mohammad Ali is in the ICU, while 18 Indians were discharged after first aid, she said. "Our mission staff is in the hospital to provide any assistance," Swaraj said. Qom is the site of the shrine of sister of Imam Ali ibn Musa Rida, the eighth Shi'ite Imam. The city is a significant destination of pilgrimage.

Mughal Road closed after snowfall in JK

The Mughal Road, connecting the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region with South Kashmir's Shopian district, was closed for vehicular traffic today after snowfall in the high altitude areas including Pir Ki Gali, a traffic police official said. The Mughal Road was opened for one-way traffic on March 31 after remaining closed for over four months during the winter but inclement weather last week again forced its brief closure and saw a rescue operation jointly carried out by the police and the Army during which 300 stranded passengers were evacuated to safety. The road was closed for vehicular traffic as a precautionary measure due to snowfall in Pir Ki Gali and heavy rains in other sectors, the official said. He said commuters had been directed to avoid avalanche-prone areas along the road to avoid any untoward incident. Fire incident reported at Narela factory

A fire broke out at a rubber factory in Narela area in northwest Delhi today, a Delhi Fire Service official said. No one was reported injured in the fire. The Delhi Fire Service received a call about the fire at 4.25pm and 11 fire-tenders were rushed to the site. Fire-fighting operations are underway, the official said.

Seven killed in Indonesia building collapse

A group of teenagers practising for a dance and music show were among seven Indonesians killed Monday when the building they were in collapsed, police said. The accident happened in Cirebon, about 220 kilometres east of Jakarta. The wall of warehouse next door fell over and crushed the local art centre where the junior high school students were preparing for a show. Seven were killed as the building caved in, including six boys between 13 and 15 years-old and the centre's 48-year-old manager, police said. Two 13-year-old girls were also injured, with one in a critical condition, they added. Police are investigating the cause of the collapse, but they said initial suspicion has fallen on the age of the art centre which had been operating since around the 1940s. Major accident averted as fire breaks out in hospital

A major accident was averted due to timely action when a fire broke out inside a store-room of a hospital in the Lal Kothi area here, an official said today. As many as 100 people, including patients, were evacuated after the fire broke out at the store-room on the second floor of the Jaipur Hospital late last night, Extinguisher Officer, Jaipur Municipal Corporation, Jalaj Ghasiya said, adding that eight fire tenders were rushed to douse the fire. Hospital officials said the staff, along with fire officials, took the patients to a safe location. The critically-ill among them will be shifted to another hospital, they added. Several ambulances from across the city were pressed into service, police said, adding that no loss of life was reported due to timely action and evacuation.

NCDEX halts trading after minor fire

Commodity bourse NCDEX today said it has temporarily suspended trading after a minor fire broke out in the basement of its headquarters at the Akruti Corporate Park on Kanjur Marg here. The trading on the NCDEX, the second largest commodity bourse, was halted at 12.19 hours after due intimation, it said. "There is minor fire at the building of NCDEX premises... The exchange management has decided to shutdown trading as safety measures till further intimation," NCDEX said in a statement. The fire erupted in the basement of Akruti Corporate Park, where NCDEX headquarters is located on the first floor. "An evacuation was conducted... All employees are safe," the exchange added.

UP: 3 killed after truck hits three-wheeler

Three persons were killed and five others injured when a three-wheeler carrying eight persons collided head on with a truck in Rasra police station area here, police said today. The accident took place around 2 am on the Ballia-Ghazipur road, they said. Apart from the three persons who were killed, including Moti Chauhan (45) and Gurjar Kharwar (40), five persons were injured in the accident, Inspector (Rasra) Jagdish Chandra Yadav said. The victims were residents of Kasimabad (Ghazipur), the official added. Police said the injured persons have been hospitalised, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem.

Severe rainfall strands dozens at Hawaii evacuation shelter

Dozens of people are stranded at a Red Cross shelter on Kauai after a storm dropped over 2 feet of rain, causing massive flooding and grounding rescue helicopters. Hawaii Gov David Ige issued an emergency proclamation for the island where heavy rainfall damaged or flooded dozens of homes in Hanalei, Wainiha, Haena and Anahola. About 40 people - mostly tourists - were stranded Sunday at Hanalei Elementary School, where the American Red Cross had opened an evacuation shelter. They briefly ran out of food and water. Coralie Chun Matayoshi, chief executive officer of the Red Cross in Hawaii, said the county's Department of Parks and Recreation offered to deliver food to the evacuees by personal watercraft, but a nearby business was also dealing with flooding and unable to provide the supplies to be delivered. China to launch new weather satellite

China will launch a new meteorological satellite this year to further boost its weather forecasting capabilities, authorities said today. The Fengyun-II 09 satellite, the last in the Fengyun-II series, will be able to collect meteorological, maritime, and hydrological data to help weather forecast in China and neighbouring regions, the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation said in a statement. The satellite will be launched from Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwest China's Sichuan Province. Fengyun satellites are a series of remote-sensing meteorological satellites developed by China. Fengyun-I and Fengyun-III are polar orbiting weather satellites, while Fengyun-II and Fengyun-IV operate in geostationary orbit, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Four elephants die in goods train accident in Odisha

Four elephants were run over by a goods train at the Telidihi village of Jharsugida district in the wee hours of Monday.The accident took place when Howrah-Mumbai Express hit the elephants at the double-crossing railway tracks near Telidihi village railway crossing.The four dead animals included one baby elephant too, according to officials.The incident had left the tracks inoperable for a few hours. One killed in fireworks mishap in Kerala

A 20-year-old man was killed and four others injured when fireworks stored in a shed went off after a lighted cracker fell near it amid festival celebrations at a Chapel near here, police said. The incident occurred last evening during 'perunnal' festivities at the Chapel in Mampra, they said. Firecrackers kept in the shed adjacent to the chapel for use during the festival went off after a cracker fell near it and burst, killing one Simon, police said. The injured have been hospitalised in Angamaly and Ernakulam here, they added.
