Air force stations in Raj participating in IAF's 'Gaganshakti'

Air force stations based in Rajasthan close to Indo-Pak border are participating in the ongoing Indian Air Force's combat exercises, defence officials said. The two-week long exercise named 'Gaganshakti' started from Sunday to check the force's operational preparedness with a focus on dealing with any possible security challenge from China and Pakistan, the officials said. The air force stations at Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Uttarlai, Phalodi, Nal and Suratgarh in Rajasthan are also participating in the exercise, they said. "The aim of this exercise is real time coordination, deployment and employment of air power in a short and intense battle scenario," the IAF said in a statement. It said concepts of accelerated operations, network centric operations, long range missions with concentrated weapon releases across all air to ground ranges in India and inter valley troop transfer have been planned as part of the exercise. Smoke observed in SpiceJet plane while landing in B'luru

Passengers of a SpiceJet plane flying from Coimbatore to Bengaluru had a narrow escape today as the crew observed smoke in the front cabin when the plane was landing, an official statement said. The flight Q 400, however, made a normal landing as the pilots did not seek for any emergency landing, a SpiceJet statement said, confirming about the incident. There was no report of injury to any passenger. While landing in Bengaluru, the crew observed light smoke in the front cabin. The aircraft made a normal landing and vacated the runway. Neither did the pilots seek nor was there any requirement of an emergency landing, the statement said, adding the passengers were deplaned safely in a normal manner.

EU airlines adjust after Syria missile strike warning

International airlines said today they were modifying their flight plans after a warning from Europe's air safety watchdog about potential military strikes on Syria in the coming days. The European Aviation Safety Agency alerted airlines on Tuesday of the possible launch of "air-to-ground and/or cruise missiles within the next 72 hours", urging them to take precautionary measures. "Air France has taken the EASA information into account and modified its flight plans for affected destinations, mainly Beirut and Tel Aviv," the airline said, adding that it was monitoring the situation. Lebanon's Middle East Airlines will also be changing flight paths for planes heading to Beirut, an official at the city's airport told AFP. Panchayat violence: 2 killed in TMC factional fight

Two persons were killed in a suspected factional fight in the ruling Trinamool Congress during a victory procession in North 24 Parganas district today, police said. The rally was organised by the party after it won the Falti Gram Panchayat in the Sasan area of the district uncontested. Local party leader Saifar Rahman (52) was attacked with a knife when he was walking in the rally. He was taken to a hospital in Barasat where he was declared dead on arrival. Police sources said local people beat 40-year-old Rajab Ali, a Trinamool Congress worker, to death alleging that he killed Rahman. Meanwhile, in continuing violence over panchayat poll nominations in the state, houses of two Congress candidates were torched in the Ratua area in Malda district, police said. An Algerian military plane carrying soldiers, their families and some refugees crashed soon after takeoff today into a field in northern Algeria, killing 257 people in what appeared to be the North African nation's worst-ever aviation disaster. Pilot killed in military jet crash in Serbia

Serbia's defense ministry says a military jet has crashed in the north of the country, killing one of two pilots who ejected from the plane. The crash of the Yugoslav made Galeb G-4 training jet occurred at 9:30 a.m. local some 40 kilometres northeast of Belgrade. The ministry says the injured pilot has been hospitalised. 257 dead as military plane crashes in Algeria

An Algerian military plane crashed and caught fire today killing 257 people, mostly army personnel and members of their families, officials said. An AFP photographer at the scene saw the charred wreckage of the plane in a field near the Boufarik airbase from where the plane had taken off. Hundreds of ambulances and dozens of fire trucks with their sirens wailing rushed to the scene of the crash about 25 kilometres southwest of Algiers. The defence ministry said in a statement that 247 passengers and 10 crew were killed without mentioning any survivors. Coast Guard inducts new offshore patrol vehicle

The Indian Coast Guard today commissioned its state-of-the-art offshore patrol vehicle (OPV) - 'Vikram', the first in a series of seven 98-metre OPVs. 'Vikram' was commissioned here by Union Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre. Coast Guard Director General Rajendra Singh and other senior officials were among those present. A defence press release said 'Vikram' would be based in New Mangaluru under the operational and administrative control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (West). CISCE to send safety manual to ICSE schools within a week

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations will send a safety manual to all affiliated schools by the third week of April, the CISCE has said. The school safety manual has been designed to ensure that children in schools were provided with a "safe, secure and caring environment", the CISCE said in a statement yesterday. "We are committed in providing a safe and secure environment to our children," the Chief Executive of the Council, Gerry Arathoon, said. The manual, in the form of a book, will be ready within a week. Later, it will be posted on the council's website, the statement said. The school safety manual covers a wide range of topics which the school administration needs to be aware of, it said.
