Indian family missing in US, authorities probing link to vehicle crashed into river

An Indian family of four was reported missing in the US state of California while on a road trip and authorities are fearing for the worst after an SUV matching their vehicle was believed to be swept away by a flood-swollen river, according to a media report. The Thottapilly family, from Kerala, went missing on Thursday while travelling from Portland to San Jose. The search continues for a maroon Honda Pilot that went down an embankment on Friday around 1:10 pm on Highway 101 near Dora Creek, about five miles north of Leggett, according to the Cailfornia Highway Patrol (CHP). Russian helicopter crash kills 6 in far eastern city

Six people died today when a helicopter operated by a local airline crashed in a city in far eastern Russia, investigators said. The Mi-8 helicopter belonging to Vostok airline crashed on a street in the city of Khabarovsk at 11:30 am local time (0130 GMT), the Investigative Committee, which probes serious incidents, said in a statement. The helicopter was carrying six crew members. "As a result of the crash, there are no survivors," the regional emergency services said. The helicopter crashed in a ravine in Khabarovsk, which is located more than 6,000 kilometres east of Mosco and is home to some 600,000 people. No further casualties were reported on the ground. Fire breaks out in building in busy Delhi market, fire officer injured

A fire officer was seriously injured during an operation to douse a fire that broke out today on the top floor of a four-storeyed building in Lajpat Nagar's busy Central Market here, officials said. The injured person has been taken to the Safdarjung Hospital, according to a Delhi Fire Service (DFS) official. "The call about fire in a fourth floor of a building in Lajpat Nagar-II's Central Market area was received at 8:55 AM and 10 fire tenders were rushed to the spot," he said. The DFS official said, "A fire officer got injured as a cylinder exploded while he was on duty there." "He suffered burn injuries to his face and hands from the blaze," the official said. The fire was brought under control by 9:50 am, he said, adding that further investigation is underway. Central Market has a number of shops and is one of the busiest markets in Delhi.

One killed as landslide engulfs houses in Japan

A man has been found dead and several people are missing after a landslide engulfed houses in southern Japan today, local officials said. "A man's body has been recovered" at the site of the landslide in a mountainous area of Nakatsu city, a municipal official said. Local officials said the body had not yet been identified, but Japan's NHK television said the man was among six people who had been reported missing by a local resident. The landslide hit in the early hours of Wednesday, and rescuers were searching for five women and one man reported missing after dirt engulfed three local homes. Local television footage showing rescuers and a digger clearing rocks and mud more than 10 hours after the disaster. Power down as fierce storm hits Auckland

Up to a quarter of homes in Auckland were without power today after a wild storm packing winds of more than 200kmh (125mph) lashed New Zealand's largest city. The storm hit the city of 1.5 million overnight, bringing down trees and peeling roofs from houses, with emergency services saying they were "inundated" responding to calls. Auckland international airport closed temporarily due to high winds and Air New Zealand reported "significant" knock-on disruption for passengers nationwide. Small plane crash on golf course kills 6 in Phoenix suburb

All six people aboard a small plane were killed when it crashed on a golf course in a Phoenix suburb shortly after taking off from a nearby airport, police said. Overnight landslide leaves 6 missing in southern Japan

Rescuers were searching today for six people after an overnight landslide buried a small cluster of houses at the foot of a steep slope in southern Japan. The landslide, which occurred around 3:50 a.m., damaged four homes in Oita prefecture on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said. Four people from one house have been confirmed safe, but six are missing from the three others, Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said. Aerial photographs from Japanese news media showed a denuded swath on a thickly forested mountainside. Kenya official says 17 dead after bus plunges into river

A Kenyan official says a bus has plunged into the Siyapei River, causing the deaths of 17 passengers and seriously injuring four people. Narok County Commissioner George Natembeya said today that 43 passengers survived with minor injuries after the bus ran off the Narok-Mai Mahiu road about 130 Kilometers west of Kenya's capital, Nairobi. The bus was travelling from Kendu Bay in western Kenya to Nairobi. Siyapei resident Jackson Sempele says the bus driver was trying to avoid hitting a truck that had pulled out onto the highway from a quarry. Road accidents in Kenya result in about 3,000 deaths every year.

US awards $18.5 billion in recovery grants for Puerto Rico

The US government announced today that it will award USD 18.5 billion worth of disaster recovery grants to Puerto Rico to help repair homes, businesses and its crumbling power grid as the US territory struggles to recover from Hurricane Maria. It is the largest single amount for such assistance ever awarded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, said Deputy Secretary Pamela Patenaude during a visit to the U.S. territory. "Our goal is to get people back into their homes, get people back to work and to build a stronger Puerto Rico for future generations," she said. The money will be issued through the agency's Community Development Block Grant program. Patenaude said that Puerto Rico planning officials will develop a disaster recovery plan in upcoming weeks. The announcement comes as 54,000 power customers remain in the dark more than six months after the Category 4 storm hit. Naval helicopter makes emergency landing at Mumbai airport

A Navy helicopter made an emergency landing at the Santacruz airport here tonight, officials said. "All the three crew members and the helicopter are safe," said spokesperson of the Western Naval Command. The Seaking 42B helicopter made the emergency landing at 8.50 PM in view of an emergency indication on it's engine. "The pilot followed the laid down procedure on the engine overheat indication and made a safe landing. Kangra tragedy: HP HC appoints amicus curiae to prevent such accidents

The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to State Government and schools in connection with Kangra school bus accident.The court also appointed amicus curiae (friend of the court) and asked him to suggest ways to prevent such accidents in future.At least 29 people were killed and several injured on April 9 after a bus of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial School fell into a deep cleft near Nurpur area in Kangra district.Meanwhile, the court has listed the matter for April 20.Earlier in the day, The Kangra Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kumar stated that there will be no cultural programme in the government functions for next 10 days.Many people also got injured in the incidents who were admitted to the Dr. RPGMC Tanda hospital for medical treatment.
