Technical glitches force Indian Navy chopper to make precautionary landing

An Indian Navy helicopter, during a routine sortie on Saturday, had to make a precautionary landing near Alleyppey after experiencing technical problems.The helicopter, Indian Navy 'Chetak 413', manufactured by now defunct French aerospace manufacture Aerospatiale, had flown from Kochin and after close to two hours of flying, it experienced low engine oil pressure with the guage indicating zero.Consequently, the crew had to take precautionary measures and carry out an emergency landing.The aircraft and all members of the crew were reported to be safe.

7 dead as small plane slams into house in Philippines T

Philippine police say a small passenger plane carrying five people crashed into a house shortly after takeoff north of Manila and killed all those onboard and two people on the ground. Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines spokesman Eric Apolonio and police say the Piper-23 Apache plane took off from the airport in Plaridel town in Bulacan province then crash landed Today for a still-unknown reason and smashed into a house. Plaridel police chief Supt. Julio Lizardo says all five Filipinos on board the six-seat plane were killed and the crash killed two other people on the ground and ignited a fire in a house that was hit by the aircraft. Rescuers are checking if there were other casualties in the burning house.

3 Kerala pilgrims killed in road mishap near Velankanni

Three pilgrims from Kerala were killed and four others injured when the car they were travelling in collided with a van near here today, police said. The incident occurred when five members of a family from Palakkad in the neighbouring state were proceeding to Velankanni in the district, in their car this morning, they said. When the car approached Velankanni, the driver suddenly noticed a bullock cart in front and swerved to avoid hitting it but collided with a van that came in the opposite direction. In the impact, three occupants of the car were killed on the spot while two others sustained injuries and were admitted to Nagapattinam government hospital, police said. The driver of the other vehicle also suffered injuries and has been admitted to the hospital. A case has been registered investigation is on, they said.

Hyderabad to Bangaluru SpiceJet flight veered off

A SpiceJet aircraft SG 1238, arriving from Hyderabad, veered off the runway at Bengaluru Airport on Friday.The incident happened late in the evening, damaging four runway lights.During the course of the runway's closure, at least 10 flights were diverted from the airport."During landing roll, the aircraft veered off to the left and was aligned to the central line by the pilot. It taxied normally to the bay.However, four runway lights got damaged. The runway is operational," SpiceJet spokesperson said.All the passengers and baggage were deplaned in a normal manner.There was no damage to the aircraft, the spokesperson added.As per reports, during the closure of the runway, eight flights were diverted to Chennai and one each to Trichy and Coimbatore.

UP: Wanted criminal injured in encounter

A wanted criminal, carrying a bounty of Rs 25,000 on him, sustained bullet injuries during an exchange of fire with the police force in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura.The criminal, who has been identified as Radha Charan, was wanted for killing a relative of Uttar Pradesh Minister Lakshmi Narayan.A motorcycle and a pistol were also recovered from his possession.During the encounter, a policeman also sustained injuries. He was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

15 killed in Kenya floods, scores of families displaced

Kenyan officials said today that at least 15 people have drowned and scores of families have been displaced across the East African nation during two days of heavy rainfall that caused flooding in urban and rural areas. The deaths happened as flood and river waters swept through Kenyan towns that had experienced drought months earlier, officials said. Kenya declared the drought a national disaster that put thousands of people at risk of starvation last year. Four of those killed were in a truck carrying charcoal in Kitui County that was swept away by the flooded River Enziu. Mwingi East Police Chief Paul Munene said four of the truck's eight occupants were rescued before the truck was engulfed with water. SpiceJet plane damages runway edge lights at Bengaluru airport

A SpiceJet aircraft today damaged runway edge lights after landing, forcing airport authorities to suspend operations for more than half-an-hour. The incident, involving the SpiceJet flight from Hyderabad, happened late in the evening. An airport official said the plane while taxiing after landing damaged a few runway lights. As the runway was closed from 2247 hours to 2328 hours, at least ten flights were diverted. The flight SG 1238 was operated with a Q400 aircraft "During landing roll , the aircraft veered off to the left and was aligned to the central line by the pilot. It taxied normally to the bay...However, four runway lights got damaged," a SpiceJet spokesperson said in a statement. All the passengers and baggage were deplaned in a normal manner. There was no damage to the aircraft, the spokesperson said. During the closure of the runway, 8 flights were diverted to Chennai and one each to Trichy and Coimbatore, according to the airport official.

Eight injured in Georgia ski chair lift crush

At least eight tourists, including a pregnant woman from Sweden, were injured on Friday when a chair lift ran out of control in the Georgian ski resort of Gudauri, officials said. Video of the accident showed skiers being flung out of their chairs as they turned a bend as other resort visitors screamed in terror. An emergency stop led to the chairs sliding back at high speed, Economy Minister Dimitry Kumsishvili told journalists, adding that the incident was "allegedly caused by an electricity outage". "The interior ministry has launched a criminal probe into alleged violation of safety norms," he added. Health Minister David Sergeenko said the tourists -- who were Georgiain, Russian, Swedish and Ukrainian -- did not suffer serious injuries. "Two of them - including a pregnant woman from Sweden -- were airlifted to a hospital in (the Georgian capital) Tbilisi," he added.

Three dead after car runs into stationary trailer-truck

Three persons died after the car in which they were travelling rammed into a stationary trailer-truck on Mumbai-Agra National Highway this morning, Kasara police said. Three others in the car were injured, one of them critically. The victims were heading from Nalasopara to Nashik. The accident took place at Umbarmali village in Kasara Ghat, police said. The deceased were identified as Manoj Mahendra Chowdhary (who was driving), Hemant Purushottam Chowdhary and Ramesh Khandu Naik. The injured were admitted to a hospital in Thane city.

One killed, six injured in fire incident in Shahdara

A 43-year-old man was killed and six others including two women and two children were injured after a fire broke out in a beauty parlour cum mobile recharge shop in northeast Delhi's Maujpur area this morning, the police said. The deceased was identified as Harish Kumar, the owner of the shop in Shahdara's Maujpur area. The injured persons were from his family and were identified as Amrita Devi (80), Sunil Kumar (47), Ghanshyam (30), Neha (28), Abhinav (12) and Anant (6), they added. They are undergoing treatment at different hospitals. A call was received at 5.45 am about the fire and three fire tenders were rushed to the spot, said an officer from the Delhi Fire Services. The fire was doused by 6.50 am. The fire started on the ground floor that housed the shop and soon spread to the other floors where Kumar stayed with his family, police said. The cause of the blaze has not been ascertained yet, though it was suspected that a short-circuit triggered the fire.

Emirates flight lands in Hyd for medical emergency, passenger

A Dubai-Bangkok flight of Emirates made an unscheduled landing at the airport here today due to a medical emergency involving a passenger, who, however, was declared dead on arrival,airport sources and the airline said. The flight landed at the international airport here around 4.30 PM after the passenger was understood to have collapsed on board, airport sources said. A spokesperson for Emirates said the passenger was confirmed to have passed away on arrival and the flight resumed its journey to Bangkok about one hour and forty-five minutes later. "Emirates confirms that flight EK372 Dubai to Bangkok on 16 March was diverted to Hyderabad due to a medical emergency. Sadly on arrival the passenger was confirmed to have passed away. Emirates offers sincere condolences to the family," a statement said without giving any further details.

Govt says no abnormal hike in airfares post grounding of 14 planes

The government today said there has been "no abnormal increase" in airfares following the grounding of 14 aircraft on engine issues and that only 1-2 per cent of the total capacity has been impacted by the decision. IndiGo and GoAir, whose 14 A320 neo planes on the ground, have decided to cancel more than 600 flights this month resulting in tough times for passengers who already have booked tickets. Against this backdrop, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said the civil aviation ministry has been monitoring prices on the impacted route and that "there has not been a significant or abnormal increase in airfares". "With 17 engines (14 aircraft) grounded due to safety considerations, imp to note that it is around 2 per cent of capacity.
