Thirteen killed in Mexican ministers helicopter crash

Thirteen people, including three children, were killed when a cabinet ministers helicopter crash-landed on the way to the epicentre of an earthquake, state officials said today. The military helicopter that went down late Friday carried Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete and Oaxaca state Governor Alejandro Murat, who were unharmed. But five women, four men, and the three children were killed, the Oaxaca prosecutors office said. Another victim died on the way to hospital.

9 people killed in cylinder blast at wedding function in Raj

Nine people, including three children and as many women, were killed and 18 others injured when a LPG cylinder exploded during a wedding ceremony in Beawar town of Rajasthan's Ajmer district, police said today. The explosion occurred last night when the wedding function was underway at a hotel, Ajmer District Collector Gaurav Goyal said, adding the explosion severely damaged the three-storey hotel. Bodies of nine people have been recovered while 18 others were injured, he said, adding rescue operation was on to trace the nine missing people. Two cars parked outside the hotel and the adjoining buildings were also damaged in the incident, police said. The collector said nearly 150 people are involved in the rescue operation, which is being carried out manually fearing that people are stuck under debris.

Toyota organises safety awareness program at IIT Delhi

The Indian counterpart of Toyota Kirloskar Motor launched a safety awareness program at Indian Institute of Delhi on Saturday.It was aimed at improving the road safety crisis in the country by inculcating safe road behavior in children and youth.The event was conducted in association of Delhi Traffic Police and IL&FS Education and Technology Services Limited as part of the Toyota Safety Education Program.The program was attended by over 250 school kids from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.The safety awareness program was further supported by World Health Organization (WHO), National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Delhi Traffic Police, hospitals and non-government organisations.A series of events were held including Quiz rounds, skit competitions and demonstrations dedicated to the theme of road safety.Vice president of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Naveen highlighted the need of road safety programs with respect to the high rate of road accidents in India.He said, " .

Low danger avalanche warning issued for J K

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir today issued a low danger avalanche warning for high altitude areas, including Jammu-Srinagar national highway, advising people to take precautionary measures. "On the basis of information received from SASE, low danger avalanche warning has been issued for various high altitude areas," an official spokesman said. He said the avalanche warning has been issued for Baramulla, Gulmarg, Furkian-Z Gali, Kupwara-Chowkibal-Tangdhar, Kupwara and Bandipora, Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Ganderbal and Bandipora-Kanzalwan-Gurez sector in the valley. The warning was also issued for Kargil and Leh in Ladakh region, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar and Udhampur in Jammu region besides Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the spokesman said. He said the people living in these avalanche prone areas have been advised by the disaster management authority to take precautionary measures.

6 killed in separate road accidents in Rajasthan

Six people were killed and as many injured in two road accidents in Rajasthan, police said today. In Sriganganagar, four people were killed and six were injured when their jeep collided head-on with a tractor-trolley. The passengers in the jeep were on the way from Chhatargarh to their village in Maler yesterday night when they met with the accident near Bhopalpura, assistant sub-inspector of police Ashok Kumar said. The deceased were identified as Shakuntala (40), her husband Brajlal (45), Rajaram Jat (45) and Pappu Khan (30). The injured were admitted to Suratgarh town, he said. In Sikar's Ramgarh Shekhawati area, two young men were killed after they lost balance on their bike and hit a tree. The deceased are Ramlal (25) and Raju (25).

Delhi govt directs liquor vends to install CCTV cameras

The excise department of the Delhi government has made it mandatory for liquor vends to install CCTV cameras, a move aimed at keeping a tab on all activities outside the outlets. The department has asked all licensees to give a declaration in writing that they have installed CCTV cameras outside the liquor shops for renewal of their licences for the next financial year. According to the department, the CCTV cameras should have a coverage of minimum 50 metres and recordings of 30 days. "Installation of CCTV cameras system having coverage of 50 metres and archival period of 30 days is must for the renewal of licence," an official said. The official said that through CCTV cameras, activities can be monitored outside the liquor shops. In November 2016, the Delhi government had launched a drive against public drinking and said that consumption of alcohol in the open, particulary near liquor vends and in vehicles was not merely a safety hazard but a major problem for women safety in the ...

3 killed as two trucks collide in UP

Three persons were killed and six injured when a truck hit another one on the Katra-Billhaur highway under Pali police station area here, a police official said today. The sand-laden truck hit a mini-truck coming from the opposition direction near Rupanpur village last night, ASP Gyanjay Singh said. While Raman Pal (30), the driver of the mini truck died on the spot, two others Balbir (35) and an unidentified person succumbed to injuries in hospital, the police officer said. The driver and cleaner of the truck fled the scene after the accident, the ASP said, adding the injured were undergoing treatment in the district hospital.

The Siachen Pioneers undertook an evacuation of a three-month-old pregnant woman, suffering from eyesight loss and dysphagia (blockage of throat causing inability to swallow), from a remote village called Kurgiak located in a valley of Shinkun La pass beyond Padam in Ladakh on Friday.The weather in the Kurgiak Valley was deteriorating with the cloud base lowering further. The terrain was completely snow-bound and the fading light due to the clouds increased the chances of disorientation.The weather was overcast with all passes covered. Strong quake shakes Mexico, no reports of damages

A strong earthquake shook a large swathe of southern and central Mexico today, triggering the quake alarm system in Mexico City and causing buildings to sway. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake, which measured 7.2 in magnitude, according to Mexicos National Seismological Service and the US Geological Survey. 7.2 magnitude earthquake jolts Mexico

An earthquake measuring 7.2 magnitudes on the Richter scale struck south and central Mexico on Friday evening.The earthquake was first measured as a 7.5-magnitude and later lowered to having a 7.2-magnitude by the U.S. Geological Survey.The quake's epicenter was 33 miles northeast of Pinotepa, in Oaxaca State.However, it's unclear if any damage or injuries were reported.The tremor comes five months after the country was rocked by an earthquake that killed 370 people.

Iranian passenger plane skids off runway on landing

Iran's official IRNA news agency is reporting that an Iranian passenger plane has skidded off the runway after its landing gear jammed during a domestic flight. 4 small earthquakes recorded in northwestern Oklahoma

The US Geological Survey reports four small earthquakes in northwestern Oklahoma, the strongest with a preliminary magnitude of 3.8. No injuries or damage have been reported as a result of the Friday morning temblors near Waynoka. Geologists say damage is not likely in quakes below magnitude 4.0. The 3.8 magnitude quake struck at 7:21 a.m. about 285 miles (459 kilometers) northwest of Oklahoma City. A magnitude 3.4 quake struck the same area at 1:16 a.m. and magnitude 2.7 and 2.6 quakes struck minutes later. Thousands of earthquakes have been recorded in Oklahoma in recent years with many linked to the underground injection of wastewater from oil and gas production. Oklahoma regulators have directed several oil and gas producers in the state to close injection wells and reduce volumes in others.

MP schoolchildren escape unhurt after their van catches fire

Eleven school children escaped unhurt here today after their van caught fire, police said. The incident happened in the afternoon on Shivpuri Link road here under Lashkar police station limits, the official said, adding that the children, studying at the St. Joseph Convent School, were returning home. He informed that an electrical fault possibly caused the problem in the van which was fitted with a gas kit. The driver immediately stopped the van and the children evacuated it safely after which it caught fire, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Gwalior, Dinesh Shrivastava, told PTI. He added that the driver, Lakhan Singh Dhakad, fled from the spot and local residents doused the flames. No child was injured in the incident, the official informed. He said that a case was registered and further investigations were underway, the official added.
