Coastal Safety Patrol for tourists proposed in Maharashtra

The Collector of Raigad district, adjoining Mumbai, has proposed formation of a Coastal Safety Patrol, on the lines of the Road Safety Patrol, to ensure safety of tourists in the area. "The concept of Coastal Safety Patrol, which is the coastal version of the Road Safety Patrol, will be implemented on the beaches of Alibaug and other tourist beaches in the district," Raigad Collector Dr Vijay Suryawanshi told PTI. The concept, which will have participation of volunteers, was discussed at a recent meeting of the District Disaster Management Board, the IAS officer said. "On beaches, there is always a danger of tourists being dragged into deep waters. CSP volunteers present there for patrolling will monitor such a situation and render assistance in case of emergencies," Suryawanshi said. These volunteers will coordinate with police, he said. Volunteers from various colleges and organisations, like the National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps and Scouts will join hands .

Ockhi: Oppn slams govt for failing to come out with exact

The opposition UDF today slammed the Kerala government for its "failure" in coming out with the exact number of persons killed and missing in the cyclone Ockhi, even nearly two months after the disaster. The Congress-led UDF members, who showed a banner in the assembly showing the pictures of the missing fishermen,trooped to the well of the House and staged a walk out alleging the government had "failed" to come out with the exact number of persons killed and missing in the cyclone Ockhi even about two months after the disaster. Lack of coordination among various government agencies had hit the rescue operations post cyclone, they charged. It was the first session of the state assembly after the cyclone Ockhi hit the state shores on November 29 and 30 last year, in which over 70 people were killed and more than 100 missing. Gas tanker overturns, disrupts vehicular movement in Thane

A gas tanker overturned on the busy Ghodbunder Road here today, disrupting vehicular movement on the route, an official said. No injury or casualty was reported in the mishap. The speeding tanker overturned near the Chena creek around noon, causing leakage of the gas from it, Thane's regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said. Fire men and rescue teams rushed to the spot. The mishap affected the movement of other vehicles on the city's arterial road. Further details were awaited.

Mumbai fire officers threaten to stop safety checks from Feb

Seeking better working conditions, the Mumbai Fire Brigade Officers Association (FBOA) has threatened to stop carrying out fire safety inspections of commercial establishments in the city from the next month. Upset over the arrest of a fire officer in the Kamala Mills fire tragedy, the 140-member association has written a letter to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ajoy Mehta over their various demands. In the letter, the FBOA said that since the fire officers remain busy in the firefighting work, the task of fire safety compliance checks was causing "additional stress". "In the letter, we submitted a list of demands to the civic administration. We are already finding it difficult to carry out our daily work and a spate of fire incidents lately have aggravated the problems," advocate Prakash Devidas, General Secretary of the FBOA told PTI. Major fire in Mundka, no casualty

A major fire broke out in a godown in Mundka on Thursday. No casualty has been reported.A waste godown caught fire at Mundka Swaran Park on Thursday morning. Thirty fire tenders were at the spot to douse the fire. Further details in this regard are awaited.On January 20, 17 people were killed in a fire at a firecracker storage unit in Bawana area in New Delhi.Of the 17 killed, 10 were women. A man and woman were also injured.A Delhi court on Wednesday sent the owner of the firecracker storage to five-day police custody.

Train derailment kills 2 in Italy

At least two people died and more than 100 others were injured after a passenger train derailed between Treviglio and Pioltello on the outskirts of the Italian city on Thursday.According to the local media reports, the accident occurred in Pioltello, around 40km from central Milan.At least five of the injured are said to be in a serious condition.Reportedly, some passengers are still trapped in the wreckage.The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical assistance.It is not yet clear what caused the derailment.

Two firemen injured in blaze

Two firemen were injured in a fire that engulfed three factories in outer Delhi's Mundka today. A call was received about a blaze at 9.25 am.Thirty fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the firefighting operations are still underway, said an official from the Delhi Fire Services. The fire engulfed a scrap dealer's shop, a shoe godown and another factory. The two firemen were identified as Manish and Ranbir. Last week, a fire broke out at "cold firecrackers" unit in Bawana that killed 17 people, including 10 women.

Kabul hotel attack killed 40 people: official

At least 40 people were killed in the attack on Kabul's luxury Intercontinental Hotel at the weekend, official figures showed today -- almost double the earlier toll released by Afghan authorities. "The final death toll (among Afghans) from Intercontinental Hotel attack stands at 25," health ministry spokesman Wahid Majrooh told AFP. With 15 foreigners already confirmed dead in the attack, that takes the total death toll to 40.

JK govt orders probe after Jhelum embankment caves in

The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a probe after a large chunk of an embankment on river Jhelum in Srinagar caved in triggering panic among city residents, a government official said today. Minister for Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, Javaid Mustafa Mir, has asked Kashmir's Divisional Commissioner Baseer Ahmed Khan to probe the reasons behind the collapse of the part of the embankment at Lasjan yesterday, the official spokesman said. Mir assured if anyone is found guilty or negligent in the inquiry report, the person would be brought to book. He asked the secretary, irrigation and flood control, to ensure the work to restore the embankment is immediately started.

US calls for South Sudan arms embargo after failed truce

The United States today called for an international arms embargo to be imposed on South Sudan following the failure of the latest ceasefire aimed at ending the four-year war. US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the Security Council that President Salva Kiir's government was "increasingly proving itself to be an unfit partner" in efforts to restore peace and urged African leaders to hold it accountable. "The time has come to acknowledge the hard reality - that the leaders of South Sudan are not just failing their people, they are betraying them," Haley told a council meeting on South Sudan. Godown gutted in fire near Panvel

A scrap material godown in Rohinjan village near Panvel city was gutted in a major blaze today, a fire brigade official said. Nobody was injured in the incident as the godown was located in an isolated area. Panvel in Raigad district is located around 48 kms away from Mumbai. "Our control room got information at 4.22 P.M about the blaze in the private godown, following which four fire engines with water tankers were rushed to the spot, which is located 15 kms away from Panvel," a Kalamboli fire brigade official said. The godown where plastic scrap material was stored was completely gutted in the incident, he added. He said the fire was brought under control and cooling operations were going on. The local police are investigating the cause of the blaze, he added.
