Toll plazas run by NHAI will soon have kiosks selling drinking water, tea/coffee, and packaged food for the convenience of highways users, the government today said. "Termed as Highway Nest, these kiosks are under construction on both up-side and down-side at all 372 NHAI run toll plazas," Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement. These kiosks are being built on 10mx20m paved platforms about 200-250 metres from the toll plaza, it said, adding that toilet facilities including that for the physically challenged are also available at these sites. "Two Highway Nests have been inaugurated - one at Narayanpura toll plaza on NH-76 on Udaipur-Chittorgarh-Kota route under Regional Office, Jaipur and another at Hyderabad- Vijaywada section of NH-65, Korlapahad toll plazas at km 118.250 (TP-2) under RO Hyderabad," the statement said. Efforts are being made to have the Highway Nest in place on all the remaining toll plazas by the end of March 2018, it added.
A fire broke out in a private wagon spare manufacturing unit near Bondel Gate in the southern part of the metropolis, Fire Brigade officials said. The fire spread fast and engulfed the entire factory on Picnic Garden Road, creating panic among the local people. The blaze was spotted shortly after 4 pm and eight fire tenders brought the situation under control within an hour, the officials said. There was no casualty in the incident, police said. Cause of the fire and the extent of damages were yet to be ascertained.
A Chinese official says the explosion and sinking of an Iranian oil tanker in the East China Sea was without precedent, creating enormous difficulties for rescue and recovery efforts. A low danger avalanche warning was issued today for some avalanche-prone areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Chandigarh-based Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) issued low danger avalanche warning for the areas above 2,500 m altitude valid for the next 24 hours starting at 5 pm. A SASE advisory said low danger avalanche warning exists for avalanche-prone areas in Kupwara, Baramulla and Bandipora districts of Jammu and Kashmir. "People are advised not to venture in avalanche-prone slopes/areas during the warning period. People are advised to keep cleaning snow from roof top of houses/temporary shelters to avoid any sudden collapse," it said.

A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded around Rs 15 lakh to the parents of a 24- year-old woman who was killed in a road mishap involving a Delhi Transport Corporation bus six years ago in north Delhi. MACT presiding officer Vidya Prakash directed United India Insurance Company limited, insurer of the offending bus, to pay Rs 14,97,000 to north-west Delhi resident Tarang Sharma's parents. "It is held that the petitioners (parents) have been able to prove on the basis of preponderance of probabilities that Tarang Sharma had sustained fatal injuries in road accident which took place on October 4, 2012,... due to rash and negligent driving of the DTC bus," the tribunal said. The Central Information Commission (CIC) has directed the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) to provide information on delay in the implementation of the Train Protection Warning System (TPWS). Information Commissioner Sridhar Acharyulu also issued a show cause notice to the Central Public Information Officer of DSIR, B N Sarkar, for not responding to an RTI application seeking information about the TPWS despite a senior DSIR official asking him to do so. Odisha government would establish an institute for training people on how to rescue victims of natural disasters such as tsunamis, cyclones and floods. The State Institute of Disaster Management (SIDM), to be set up at Gothapatna here, will also conduct research activities related to disaster management, an officer of the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) said. Personnel of the fire brigade, the police, civil defence and volunteers who are engaged in rescue operations in the event of natural disasters would be given training at SIDM, said OSDMA Commissioner-cum-Secretary and Managing Director, B P Sethi. A major fire broke out at Navrang Studio inside Todi Mill Compound in south Mumbai's Lower Parel early today, leaving a fireman injured, a senior fire brigade official said. Part of the studio, which was shut years ago, was gutted in the blaze. The building, in which the studio is located is dilapidated and unoccupied, the official said. "At 1 am, our firemen received a call about the blaze in Todi Mill Compound in Lower Parel. Dozens of residents of Chicalim village in Goa, near the Dabolim International Airport, were evacuated from their homes by disaster response officials, after a tanker carrying ammonia gas met with an accident and turned turtle, causing gas leakage.
Two women were hospitalised after a tanker carrying ammonia overturned on the nearby highway connecting Vasco City to Panaji early Friday morning.According to Police sources, a tanker carrying Ammonia gas and proceeding towards Zuari Industries at Zuarinagar fell into a roadside ditch and overturned near SAG ground at around 2.45 am.There have been no serious casualties except for the hospitalisation of the two old women from a flat.
Hundreds of residents in Goa's Chicalim village were today evacuated from their homes after a tanker carrying ammonia overturned on the nearby Vasco City- Panji highway in the wee hours. "The tanker carrying ammonia overturned at around 2.45 a.m. and the gas started leaking from it. Police, Fire, and Emergency Services were directed to raise an alarm and evacuate the entire area," Deputy Collector Mahadev Arondekar told PTI. The disaster response mechanism was pressed into action and people were asked to vacate their houses as the gas had spread around the entire area of Chicalim which is located on the highway, a few kilometers away from State Airport. The highway crossing through Chicalim village was also blocked and the traffic diverted through other roads, said Arondekar. Nearly 300 houses are located in the area where the incident took place.
Chandigarh-based Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) has issued a low-danger avalanche warning for some avalanche-prone areas of Jammu and Kashmir.As per the institution, the avalanche warning has been issued for areas above 2500 metre altitude and will be valid for the next 24 hours.The warning has been issued for areas in Bandipora, Ganderbal and Kupwara districts of Jammu and Kashmir.The SASE has advised people in these regions to avoid venturing into avalanche prone slopes during the warning period.Earlier in the month, as many as 11 people were killed after the Tangdhar avalanche hit the Kupwara-Tangdhar road in the state.Meanwhile, two persons, including a child and a 46-year-old, were pulled out alive, and rushed to the Kupwara District Hospital, from where they were shifted to Srinagar for further treatment.
