Philippines storm death toll climbs to 182
The death toll from a tropical storm in the southern Philippines rose to 182 early today, with 153 people still missing, police said, after rescuers pulled dozens of bodies from a swollen river. Tropical Storm Tembin has lashed the nation's second- largest island of Mindanao since Friday, triggering flash floods and mudslides. The Philippines is pummelled by 20 major storms each year on average, many of them deadly. But Mindanao, home to 20 million people, is rarely hit. Police, soldiers and volunteers used shovels to dig through mud and debris as they searched for bodies in the village of Dalama today. "The river rose and most of the homes were swept away. Rajasthan bus accident: Rahul expresses grief

Tourists rescued from sea off Arambol beach in Goa
A group of tourists were yesterday rescued from the sea by lifeguards at Arambol in North Goa. The rescued included a ten-year-old boy, the agency providing the lifeguard service at Arambol beach said. Drishti Marines, a private company which provides lifeguard services in Goa, said that the incident happened around 1:30pm. "A 10-year-old boy who had ventured into the water along with his family was caught in a rip current and started drifting seawards and a group of five male tourists who were swimming in the same zone rushed to rescue the boy," an agency official said. "Simultaneously, three family members of the boy spotted him in trouble and rushed to his aid," the agency press note added. Subsequently all nine got caught in the current, said the official. Aardvark missing after fire at London Zoo
A fire broke out at London Zoo early this morning, engulfing a cafe and shop near an animal petting area, and leaving one aardvark missing. Several staff were treated for smoke inhalation and shock following the blaze, which broke out in the Animal Adventure section shortly after 6:00 am, the zoo said. "Duty staff that live on site at the zoo were on the scene immediately, and started moving animals to safety," it said in a statement. "The London Fire Brigade were on the scene within minutes and the fire was brought under control by 9:16 am. "A number of zoo staff have been treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and shock. Our staff are now in the process of assessing the situation in difficult conditions. "At present one aardvark is currently unaccounted for." London Zoo fire leaves facility closed
The London Zoo is on a lockdown after a fire broke out at a popular cafe close to the zoo premises.Over 70 firefighters and ten fire engines are present at the spot to douse the flames.According to the Guardian, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called at 6:08 am to the Adventure Cafe and Shop near the Meerkat enclosure in north-west London.Eight have been reported injured so far and one aardvark is also reported missing.A photograph posted on Twitter by LFB shows smoke billowing from the building as firefighters work at the scene.A spokeswoman for LFB earlier tweeted: "Approximately half of Adventure Cafe and Shop, which also contains an animal petting area, is currently alight. Watchman dies after inhaling smoke; colleague critical
A watchman of a nearby private engineering college died after inhaling smoke from a small fireplace in the cabin to beat the biting cold, police said. Police said the man and his colleague lit the fire in the closed cabin and went to sleep. This morning,a policeman on patrol, who used to sign a log book in the cabin, got no response to repeated knocks and informed his higher-ups. He then broke open the door and found the two watchmen unconscious. With the help of college staff, they were shifted to the Government Hospital here, where Shanmugam (47) was declared brought dead, police said. The other man, Krishnan (56), is reportedly in a critical condition and was being treated, they said.
90 killed in Philippines landslides
Over 90 people were killed and scores missing when a severe tropical storm striked the Philippines, triggering flooding and massive landslides.The casualties were reported in Mindanao, located in the southern part of the country, Daily Star said.A local weather bureau said that the storm had gathered strength over the Sulu Sea.Wind speeds hit a speed of 80 kmph and was moving westwards at 20 kmph.The storm was heading out over the sea by Saturday afternoon and would dissipate by Monday, it said.Ryan Cabus, a local official, said: "We're still trying to confirm reports of a farming village, buried by a mudslide due to heavy rains by the typhoon."Rescue operations were hampered since all power and communication lines in the affected area had been cut.Cabus also added that emergency workers, soldiers, police and volunteers were being mobilised to search for survivors.The debris will be cleared and power and communications' lines would be restored soon.At the time of filing this report, ..

One killed in road accident in Haryana
A 27-year-old person was today killed while three others sustained serious injuries when their car rammed into road divider on NH-1 near Ambala cantt, police said. The accident took place near Shahpur village when car driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed into road divider, police said. Jatin was killed, while three other occupants of the car were referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, they said.
Egypt road accidents leave 26 dead
Two accidents on Egypt's roads have killed at least 26 people in three days, authorities said.
