In swipe at Congress and DMK, Shah dubs them '2G,3G, 4G' parties

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday took a swipe at the Congress and DMK over dynasty politics and alleged corruption, calling them "2G, 3G, 4G" parties and said the time has come in Tamil Nadu to throw away these and give the power to a "son of the soil". Addressing a public meeting here to highlight the nine years of the BJP-led NDA government's achievements, he also lashed out at the two opposition parties at the Centre for opposing the abrogation of Article 370 and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "uniting Kashmir" with India by a stroke of the pen. "Congress and DMK are 2G, 3G, 4G parties. I am not talking about the 2G (spectrum allocation scam). 2G means two generations, 3G means three generations and 4G means four generations," he said. "The Maran family (of the DMK) is doing corruption for two generations. The Karunanidhi family is doing corruption for three generations. The Gandhi family is 4G. Rahul Gandhi is fourth generation and for four generations they are .

AIADMK urges TN govt to take precautionary measures during temple festivals

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday urged the Tamil Nadu government to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of devotees when they congregate in large numbers to take part in events such as the Chithirai Festival in Madurai. The leader of the opposition in the Assembly was critical of the DMK regime, stating that because it did not take adequate measures, there had been fatal incidents in the past two years in various places, including the chariot accidents in Dharmapuri and Thanjavur and the five youths drowning during a temple ritual in Madipakkam in the city last month. Observing that over 10 lakh people gather to witness Lord Kallazhagar enter the Vaigai river in Madurai district during the Chithirai festival every year, Palaniswami claimed that during the AIADMK rule precautionary measures were taken with the support of the police force so that even minor incidents would not take place. However, during the Chithirai Festival held on May 5, 2023,

CBI to probe corruption in Metro project during previous DMK regime: BJP

Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Sunday said he had lodged a complaint with the CBI on a project implemented during the previous DMK regime (2006-11), over which he had recently levelled corruption allegations. Speaking to reporters, the BJP leader said his party was committed to fighting against corruption and it would reflect in its proposed statewide yatra titled 'En Mann En Makkal' (my soil, my people), ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. "You have started seeing it in Tamil Nadu also," he said, apparently referring to the recent release of the 'DMK Files' by him, in which he had listed the assets (and their valuation) allegedly belonging to leaders of the ruling party in the state. Responding to a question, Annamalai said he had lodged a complaint with the CBI about the Chennai Metro Rail Phase I project vis-a-vis kickbacks, and submitted proof as well. "I was told that six others too have filed complaints. A firm which had taken part in the biding process has filed a ...

BJP TN president Annamalai sends legal notice to DMK leader Bharathi

BJP Tamil Nadu unit president K Annamalai on Saturday sent a legal notice to DMK leader R S Bharathi seeking "Rs 500 crore and one" towards damages for defaming him by alleging that he received crores of rupees from a scam. Referring to Bharathi's recent press conference, the notice sent by advocate R C Paul Kanagaraj said an allegation was made by the DMK leader that Annamalai received money as part of the "Aarudhra scam." The scam in which depositors were duped in Tamil Nadu is under police probe. Immediately after Annamalai released 'DMK Files' on April 14, Bharathi had on the same day alleged it was a diversionary attempt as the BJP leader faced allegations of receiving crores from the scam. The notice to Bharathi said: "Initially you say he received several crores and then you say he and his associates received Rs 84 crore directly. You don't reveal any further details, such as who paid the money to my client or who these associates are. You say you have come to know this becau

Annamalai hits back at DMK's Rs 500 crore damages demand, calls it baseless

Hitting back at the DMK over its legal notice seeking apology and Rs 500 crore in damages for his graft allegations against party president and Chief Minister M K Stalin, Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai on Monday sought a similar amount from the ruling party for making certain "baseless" allegations against him. In a statement titled "I am ready for legal action," uploaded on his Twitter page, the state BJP president also claimed there was 'proof' for alleged corruption in the Metro rail project in the earlier DMK regime and said "we are going to submit them to the CBI." Taking a swipe at DMK Organisation Secretary R S Bharathi who had issued the legal notice, Annamalai asked him to "remain patient till (CBI) summons are issued to your party president and others involved" in the issue. In its legal notice dated April 15, issued after Annamalai levelled corruption charges against Stalin and other party leaders titled "DMK files", Bharathi had insisted the allegations were "false, .

Besides demanding an unconditional, public apology from Annamalai on behalf of Stalin, Bharathi wanted "offending" videos containing the allegations removed from the social media and a website. The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) said that ever since Ravi assumed office in 2021, his speeches and activities have been controversial and mysterious. On April 5, Ravi had stoked fresh controversy by remarking that foreign funds had fuelled the protests against Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi and Kudankulam nuclear power plant. While addressing civil service aspirants in Raj Bhavan, Ravi said such protests were aimed at hindering progress Forgetting that he was a Governor, Ravi has been "desperate to project himself as a representative of the BJP and RSS", a joint statement of SPA parties said. Stalin urges DMK workers to strive to win all LS seats in TN, Puducherry

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin on Saturday exhorted the party workers to strive to win all the 39 Lok Sabha seats in the state and the lone constituency in neighbouring in Puducherry in the Parliamentary elections scheduled next year. Addressing a mammoth gathering here, where more than 4,000 people from various political parties including the AIADMK and DMDK joined the ruling DMK, Stalin reminded that the Secular Democratic Alliance (SDA), led by his party had lost one seat to the opposition in the previous Lok Sabha elections in 2019. He urged the partymen to work hard to win all the 40 seats (39 in TN and 1 in Puducherry) in the coming elections, since the people had given a clear mandate for the SDA by giving a thumping victory to the alliance partner-Congress' candidate- in the recent Erode East Assembly bypoll. Stalin said the win in Erode East was a reflection of the good governance and schemes given to the people of Tamil Nadu, like free bus travel fo

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan will join the Erode East bypoll campaign on Sunday, canvassing for ruling DMK-headed Secular Progressive Alliance candidate EVKS Elangovan. This will be the first time Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) is backing another party in an electoral contest since it has faced all polls, including the 2021 Assembly elections by itself since its founding in 2018. Congress leader Elangovan is pitted against the AIADMK's K S Thennarasu while Seeman's Naam Tamizhar Katchi and actor Vijayakanth's DMDK candidates are also in the fray. According to the itinerary released by MNM here, Haasan will hold campaign meetings in five locations later on Sunday. A Raja slams govt for not refuting Opposition's allegations on Adani

DMK leader A Raja claimed on Thursday that the opposition's allegations about businessman Gautam Adani stand true as the government has not "refuted" them. Participating in a discussion on the Union Budget for 2023-24, Raja said the claim of the government that it was the representative of 140 crore people of the country was also not true as the opposition has more than 200 MPs in Lok Sabha. "The allegations made by the opposition were not refuted at all by the government. Since it was not refuted, it stands true," he said. The opposition, including the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has stalled the proceedings of both Houses of Parliament for three days of the Budget Session, demanding a joint parliamentary committee probe into the fraud-allegation-triggered rout in Adani Group company stocks, before participating in the debate on the motion of thanks on the President's address. DMK minister S M Nasar lands in row over 'stone' hurling incident

A controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu over a DMK minister angrily hurling something, apparently at a party worker, with the BJP state unit alleging he threw "stones at people in frustration." There was no immediate response from the minister concerned, SM Nasar who holds the Milk and Dairy Development portfolio, or the ruling DMK over the issue. A video of the minister picking up something from the ground angrily and hurling it at someone has gone viral. Nasar had reportedly gone to a venue here to oversee arrangements for a party event and was apparently miffed at something. It was not clear whether he threw a stone or a lump of earth. However, BJP TN unit president K Annamalai alleged the minister threw stones at people. "In India's history, has anybody seen a govt minister throwing stones at people?" he asked in a tweet. Annamalai uploaded the viral video on his micro-blogging page. "Throwing stones at people in frustration. No decency, No decorum & treating people like ...
