Trump signals no shutdown compromise as senators schedule weekend session

Senators are working through the weekend for the first time since the government shutdown began more than a month ago, hoping to find a bipartisan resolution that has eluded them as federal workers have gone unpaid, airlines have been forced to cancel flights and SNAP benefits have been delayed for millions of Americans. As the weekend session was set to begin Saturday, it was uncertain whether Republicans and Democrats could make any headway toward reopening the government and breaking a partisan impasse that has now lasted 39 days. President Donald Trump made clear Saturday that he is unlikely to compromise any time soon with Democrats who are demanding an extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits, posting on social media that it is the worst Healthcare anywhere in the world. He suggested Congress send money directly to people to buy insurance. Senate Republican leaders have signaled an openness to an emerging proposal from a small group of moderate Democrats to end the ...

Washington's struggling economy takes another economic hit from shutdown

With the combination of the longest government shutdown, the mass firings of government workers and a fresh cut in federal food aid, the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington is bracing for the swell of people who will need its help before the holiday season. The food bank, which serves 400 pantries and aid organisations in the District of Columbia, northern Virginia and two Maryland counties, is providing 8 million more meals than it had prepared to this budget year a nearly 20% increase. The city is being hit especially hard," said Radha Muthiah, the group's CEO and president, "because of the sequence of events that has occurred over the course of this year". The nation's capital has been battered by a series of decisions by the Trump administration, from the layoffs of federal workers to the ongoing law enforcement intervention into the district. The added blow of the shutdown, which has furloughed workers and paused money for food assistance, is only deepening the economic ...

US Supreme Court issues emergency order to block SNAP food aid payments

The Supreme Court on Friday granted the Trump administration's emergency appeal to temporarily block a court order to fully fund SNAP food aid payments amid the government shutdown. A judge had given the Republican administration until Friday to make the payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. But the administration asked the appeals court to suspend any court orders requiring it to spend more money than is available in a contingency fund, and instead allow it to continue with planned partial SNAP payments for the month. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP's earlier story follows below. Residents in some US states began to receive their full SNAP food aid Friday as an appeals court left in place, for now, an order requiring President Donald Trump's administration to fund the monthly benefits amid a U.S. government shutdown. A judge had given the Republican administration until Friday to make the payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

US to boycott G20 in South Africa over white farmers issue, says Trump

President Donald Trump said Friday that no US government officials would be attending the Group of 20 summit this year in South Africa, citing the country's treatment of white farmers. Trump had already announced he would not attend the annual summit for heads of state from the globe's leading and emerging economies. Vice President JD Vance had been scheduled to attend in Trump's place, but a person familiar with Vance's plans who was granted anonymity to talk about his schedule said Vance would no longer travel there for the summit. It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa, Trump said on his social media site. In his post, Trump cited abuses of Afrikaners, including violence and death as well as confiscation of their land and farms. The Trump administration has long accused the South African government of allowing minority white Afrikaner farmers to be persecuted and attacked. As it restricted the number of refugees admitted annually to the US to 7,500, the

Cornell to pay $60 mn in deal with Trump admin to restore federal funding

Cornell University has agreed to pay USD 60 million and accept the Trump administration's interpretation of civil rights laws in order to restore federal funding and end investigations into the Ivy League school. Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff announced the agreement on Friday, saying it upholds the university's academic freedom while restoring more than USD 250 million in research funding that the government withheld amid investigations into alleged civil rights violations. The university agreed to pay USD 30 million directly to the US government along with another USD 30 million toward research that will support US farmers. Kotlikoff said the agreement revives the campus' partnership with the federal government while affirming the university's commitment to the principles of academic freedom, independence, and institutional autonomy that, from our founding, have been integral to our excellence. The six-page agreement is similar to one signed by the University of Virginia las

Trump admin's 17th strike on alleged drug boat kills 3 in Caribbean water

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday announced another deadly US strike on a boat he said was trafficking narcotics in the Caribbean Sea. The attack Thursday killed three people aboard the vessel, Hegseth said, bringing the death toll from the Trump administration's campaign in South American waters up to at least 69 people in at least 17 strikes. Hegseth posted a 20-second video of the strike on social media and wrote, As we've said before, vessel strikes on narco-terrorists will continue until their ... poisoning of the American people stops. He claimed the vessel was operated by a Designated Terrorist Organisation. President Donald Trump has justified the strikes by saying the United States is in armed conflict with drug cartels and claiming the boats are operated by foreign terror organisations. The administration has not provided evidence or more details. Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefed a small group of congressional leaders Wednesday on the growing ..

US Commerce secy cites India while defending Trump's tariff amid SC case

US President Donald Trump used tariffs as a diplomatic tool to "buy justice" and had urged India to stop buying oil from Russia to help end the Ukraine war, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has claimed. Lutnick made the remarks in an interview with Fox News on Thursday, defending Trump's use of tariff powers as the Supreme Court heard arguments on its legality. The court is examining whether it was lawful for Trump to use emergency powers under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose sweeping reciprocal tariffs on several countries, including India. "The president is using these taxes to buy justice; he is using the tariffs to end the war in Russia and Ukraine, where he has told India 'stop buying oil,'" Lutnick said, adding that restricting these powers (IEEPA) would weaken Trump's ability to make "the world and the US a safer place." Expressing confidence, he said that the US President will win the case because "these powers protect America". Trum

Trump hosts Central Asian leaders to counter China's rare earth dominance

US President Donald Trump hosted leaders of five Central Asian countries at the White House on Thursday as he intensifies his hunt for rare earth metals needed for high-tech devices, including smartphones, electric vehicles and fighter jets. Trump and the officials from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan held bilateral meetings in the Oval Office before having a working dinner. These nations were once home to the ancient Silk Road connecting East and West, Trump said, while noting that sadly, previous American presidents neglected this region completely". He added, I understand the importance of this region but a lot of people don't know that. The White House visits followed Trump managing at least a temporary thaw with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on differences between the United States and China over the export of rare earth elements, a key point of friction in their trade negotiations. Early last month, Beijing expanded export restrictions over vital

Kazakhstan to join Abraham Accords with Israel in boost to Trump initiative

Kazakhstan is set to join the Abraham Accords between Israel and Arab and Muslim majority countries in a symbolic move aimed at boosting the initiative that was a hallmark of US President Donald Trump's first administration. The action, announced on Thursday, is largely symbolic as Kazakhstan has had diplomatic relations with Israel since 1992 and is much farther geographically from Israel than the other Abraham Accord nations -- Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan and the UAE. Those countries agreed to normalise relations with Israel as a result of joining the accords, something Kazakhstan did shortly after gaining independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The move was first confirmed to The Associated Press by three US officials who insisted on anonymity to detail plans that hadn't yet been made public. Hours later, Trump posted on his social media site that he'd had a great call between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, of Israel, and President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, of ...
