66 killed, over 50,000 evacuated as major earthquake hits China's Sichuan

The death toll from a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck southwestern China rose to 66 as rescuers searched for victims and survivors, local authorities said on Tuesday. The powerful quake hit Luding County in Sichuan province on Monday. Sixty-six people were killed and over 50,000 people evacuated after the quake, authorities said. So far, 38 people have been killed in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, and the other 28 died in the city of Ya'an, the rescue headquarters told a press briefing. Four counties and one county-level city in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and two counties in Ya'an reported quake-related damages. Luding County in Ganzi and Shimian County in Ya'an were the hardest-hit areas. Fifteen people were missing and 253 were injured, with five persons in critical condition and 70 in serious condition, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Authorities in southwestern China's Chengdu have maintained strict COVID-19 lockdown measures on the city's population of 21 million despite a major earthquake that killed at least 65 people in outlying areas. Footage circulating online Tuesday showed workers wearing top-to-bottom protective gear preventing residents of apartment buildings from exiting through locked lobby doors following Monday's 6.8 magnitude quake centered in the surrounding province of Sichuan. Buildings in Chengdu and other parts of western China were shaken by the quake. No damage was reported in the city. The powerful earthquake that set off landslides and shook buildings in southwestern China killed at least 65 people and injured hundreds, state media said Tuesday. At least 16 other people are missing a day after the 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck a mountainous area in Luding county in Sichuan province, which sits on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau where tectonic plates meet and is hit regularly by quakes. China steps up relief after Sichuan earthquake; 50,000 people relocated

Over 50,000 people have been relocated to safer locations after damages were caused to buildings due a powerful earthquake of 6.8-magnitude that jolted Luding County in China's southwest Sichuan province which claimed the lives of 46 people so far. As of Monday night, 16 people were missing and over 50 injured, Wang Feng, deputy director of the Sichuan provincial emergency management department told a media briefing in Chengdu. Among the dead, 29 were from Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Luding County, and the other 17 were from Ya'an City. Over 50,000 people in Ganzi and Ya'an have been evacuated to safety, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Sunday inaugurate the 'Smriti Van' memorial and launch projects worth Rs 4,400 crore at Bhuj in Gujarat's Kutch district during the second day of his visit to the state where the Assembly elections are due later this year. Two more earthquakes jolt Jammu-Kashmir; total 13 tremors in five days

Two mild earthquakes struck Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, officials said. The tremors of magnitude 2.9 and 3.4 were reported within a span of over four-and-a-half hours in the morning, they said. With this, a total of 13 earthquakes having mild intensity had hit Doda, Kishtwar, Katra (Reasi) and Udhampur districts of the Jammu province since Tuesday. There was no report of any loss of life or damage to property, the officials said. They said the epicentre of the first earthquake, which occurred at 4.32 am, was 26 kilometres south west of Bhaderwah town at latitude of 32.87 degrees north and longitude of 75.46 degrees east at a depth of 10 kms. It was followed by another tremor at 9.06 am, five kms southeast of Doda town. The quake hit at a latitude of 33.10 degrees north and a longitude of 75.57 degrees east at a depth of five km, the officials said.

2 more earthquakes hit J&K in 1 hour; no loss of life or property reported

Two earthquakes, of magnitudes 4.1 and 3.2, hit Jammu and Kashmir late on Wednesday night but no loss of live or damage to property was reported, officials said. The epicentre of the quakes was 62 kilometers northeast of Katra area in Jammu region at a depth of 5 kilometers, they said. On Tuesday, six earthquakes jolted Jammu and Kashmir but there was no report of loss of life or damage to any property. 4 earthquakes jolt J&K in less than 8 hours, no loss of life or property

Four earthquakes jolted Jammu and Kashmir in less than eight hours on Tuesday. No loss of life or damage to property was reported, officials said. The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 2.20 am, was 61 km east of Katra area in Jammu region, they said. The officials said the quake hit at latitude 33.07 degrees north and longitude 75.58 degrees east at a depth of 10 km. An undersea earthquake shook part of eastern Indonesia on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 5.7-magnitude quake struck about 158 kilometers (98 miles) off Laikit village in North Sulawesi province.
