ABVP to protest against DU vice chancellor

The ABVP will be staging a protest against the Delhi University vice-chancellor for not meeting the elected members of the varsity's students' union. The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad claimed that DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Tyagi has not been seen by any student for almost seven months. "He does not listen to problems of students and does not want to meet the elected student body (DUSU). We are paying homage to our 'Dead Vice Chancellor'," they said in a statement. Madhyamil examination curriculum being reviewed: Official

The Syllabus Reforms Committee of Madhyamik -- the Class 10 state board examination in West Bengal -- is reviewing its existing curriculum but not mulling any immediate change, a top official said on Monday. It has undertaken the process of reviewing the entire curriculum for Classes 9 and 10, the committee official said here. "The committee will suggest if there is need for any change in any part (of the syllabus), and the department and board officials will assess its report and implement the suggestions if they deem it necessary," he said. To a question, the committee official said, since no changes in Madhyamik syllabus can be effected within a period of five years, there is no immediate case for a "sudden change" in the curriculum. The 2022 Madhyamik examination is the earliest when such a change can be introduced, he said, adding, the review exercise is a periodic process. Partha assures part-time college, varsity teachers of

West Bengal government will ask the state College Service Commission to take into account the years of experience of part time college and university teachers while considering their demand for regularisation of service, Education minister Partha Chatterjee said Sunday. Chatterjee, however, stressed that the eligibility criteria would always be followed while regularising jobs of part-time teachers. Education spend rose to 4.6 pc of GDP, target 6 pc: Javadekar

Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Sunday that the government expenditure on education has gone up from 3.8 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014 to 4.6 per cent during the NDA rule. Educational infrastructure too is being expanded and reformed, the minister said at a convocation at D Y Patil University in Navi Mumbai. "It is our priority that 6 per cent of GDP should be allotted to education...While total expenditure by central and state governments on education was 3.8 per cent of GDP in 2014, it has increased to 4.6 per cent now. This indicates that we are progressing towards 6 per cent," he said. Tripura govt to give laptops to school teachers

Tripura government has decided to distribute laptops to 800 school teachers to assess the level of students development in different disciplines. State Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath told reporters that the government has sanctioned Rs 28 crore for -Notun Disha (new direction) - a new one-month project to provide training to teachers. Eight hundred teachers would be selected for the training, and selected NGOs, societies or educational institutions would provide them training. In February, the state government held a Baseline Survey to asses the educational status of students between 3rd and 8th standard in government schools. OMR sheets of 108 students missing from exam centre

OMR sheets of the Mathematics paper of 108 students who had appeared for matriculation examination were found missing from a government-run high school in Malkangiri district on Sunday. The matter came to light after the authorities of SSD High School at Padia lodged a complaint at Padia police station, police said. The complaint said the optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets of nearly 108 students, who appeared for Mathematics exam on Saturday, have gone missing from the school premises. Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Jagmohan Meena said a team led by ASP U C Nayak has been sent to the school to conduct a thorough probe into the incident. Utkal University gets rural campus at Chandikhole

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Saturday inaugurated the second campus of Utkal University at Chandikhole during his visit to Jajpur district, an official statement said. Two courses master degree in Public Health and MBA in Rural Management will start from the rural campus at Chandikhole. Classes will commence from its temporary campus at Baba Bhairabananda College near the demarcated site for the permanent campus, the statement said. The rural campus will start classes from this academic session. The courses will be offered in the second campus keeping in mind the need of industries in the mineral-rich Jajpur district, it added. Maha varsities to get Lokpal for students' grievances: Tawde

The Maharashtra government will appoint a lokpal in all universities in the state, except its agricultural universities, to resolve student grievances, state minister Vinod Tawde said Saturday. The Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education minister said the appointment of the students' ombudsman would be made in the "next two to three months". The lokpal shall be a person related to the university and someone not below the rank of retired district judge or a retired vice-chancellor, registrar, professor or principal, Tawde said. Tawde said Maharashtra would be the first state in the country to have such a lokpal for universities, adding that grievance cells would be set up in each degree college headed by the respective principals.
