Expressing concern over vandalism and anarchy often witnessed in higher education institutions, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Thursday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to frame necessary rules within six months to maintain conducive atmosphere at campuses. The high court directed the state government to consider the suggestions made by the Lucknow University vice-chancellor last October in this regard to curb menace of ill elements at universities, colleges and other institutions. The court said the suggestions would be acted upon till the laws were framed by the state government by way of legislative enactment or ordinance. A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan passed the above direction on a PIL, which the court had itself registered taking suo-motu cognizance of the vandalism that had happened at Lucknow University on July 4 last year. The Delhi University Teachers' Association or DUTA Thursday decided to continue its strike till March 8 and planned a march from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar to press for their demands that include regularisation of ad-hoc teachers and promulgation of ordinance on the roster issue. The DUTA general body meeting (GBM) made these proposals. The DUTA has been on a strike from Wednesday and in the meeting it was decided that the strike, which was to continue till March 1, will now be till March 8. The DUTA also supported the call for 'Bharat Bandh' on March 5 to mark a year since the letter striking down the 200-point reservation roster taking university/ college as a unit. Madhya Pradesh Bhoj (Open) University and Doordarshan have inked an MoU to telecast pre-recorded lectures of BA and BSc courses. The lectures would be telecast every day from 8 AM to 10 AM from March 1. "We have inked an agreement with Doordarshan to telecast lectures as part of 'Aapki Shikhsa Aapke Dwar' (education at doorstep) program," the varsity's Vice Chancellor Jayant Sonwalkar told PTI Thursday. "The lectures are pre-recorded, based on the integrated syllabus followed by various universities in the state. They have been delivered by experienced faculty," he said. "At a later stage this will be made more interesting by making the lectures interactive," he added. The lectures would be aired on Bhopal Doordarshan's channel, and also made available on the DDMP mobile app.

The Jammu and Kashmir State Administrative Council (SAC) Thursday accorded sanction to the establishment of 10 new government degree colleges at far flung areas of the state between 2019-2021, an official spokesman said. The SAC, which met here under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik, also approved upgradation of 228 schools spread across various districts, the spokesman said. At least 40 school students were injured after two buses collided on the Sonauli-Gorakhpur highway in Purenderpur area here on Thursday morning, police said. The incident took place at 8.50 am, when a school bus collided with a tourist bus, they said. At least four polytechnic students drowned in a water body near Kodad in Telangana's Suryapet district on Wednesday.The Kodad Police said that around 20 students participated in a birthday party organised near the water body in the outskirts of the town.After the party, a student tried to wash his hands in the water body and slipped and fell into the water. Three others tried to save him by jumping into water, but all the four drowned.The locals tried to rescue the students but till then the four of them had drowned.The four students have been identified as -- Md. Sameer (17), Bhavani Prasad (17), Praveen (19) and Mahendra Simha (17).The bodies have been shifted to a local government hospital for postmortem. A case has been registered in the matter.
