TN govt begins distribution of laptops for students

: A total of 15.18 lakh laptops worth Rs 1,340.44 crore is to be distributed to students during this academic year. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami handed over seven laptops to students at a function held at the Secretariat to mark the launch of the scheme for 2018-19. Laptops worth Rs 5,552.39 crore benefiting 37.88 lakh students were distributed between the academic years 2011-12 and 2017-18, an official press release said. School education minister K A Sengottaiyan, Local administration minister S P Velumani and IT Minister M Manikandan were among those present on the occasion. Dubbed as one of the flagship schemes of the ruling AIADMK, the scheme was formally rolled out by the late chief minister and party supremo J Jayalalithaa in 2011.

Haryana Assembly passes 18 bills on last day of its budget session

The Haryana Assembly passed 18 bills, including the one that paves the way for regularisation of services of guest teachers, on the last of its budget session on Wednesday. Introducing the Guest Teachers' Bill 2019, Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said the BJP government in the state has fulfilled the promise made in 2014 to contractual teachers that their services will be regularised. The Assembly passed the bill unanimously. The Education Department in 2005 had authorised heads of institutions/block education officers to assess shortfall in number of teachers and engage guest faculty wherever necessary. Sharma told the House that initially, the guest teachers were engaged on a fixed remuneration on per-period-per-day basis. However, from April 4, 2009, they were engaged on yearly contract and were given a fixed remuneration. The bill was passed to provide for the validation of appointment of teachers already engaged as guest faculty and to allow them to continue to work in the ..

HRD ministry launches scheme to provide apprenticeship opportunities to fresh graduates

Union minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday launched a scheme for providing industry apprenticeship opportunities to fresh graduates. The Scheme for Higher Education Youth in Apprenticeship and Skills (SHREYAS) is a programme basket comprising the initiatives of three central ministries, including the HRD, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Javadekar said. "The education with skills is the need of the hour and the SHREYAS will be a major effort in this direction to make our degree students more skilled, capable, employable and aligned to the needs of our economy so that they contribute to country's progress and also obtain gainful employment," he said. Schools in Rajouri closed due to ceasefire violations by Pak

Schools in Rajouri in the Jammu region were on Wednesday closed indefinitely in the wake of shelling by Pakistan. IIT KGP to host Smart India Hackathon grand finale on Mar 2-3

IIT Kharagpur will be hosting the grand finale of the 'Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2019', on March 2-3 that would test the students' abilities to solve daily life problems. This year, 186 students from various colleges including six from IIT Kharagpur, will be participating in the event, an IIT KGP statement said Wednesday. The event is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resources Development. Over 1,300 teams, each having eight participants, will be competing non-stop for 36 hours across 48 different nodal centres of the country, in the grand finale on March 2-3. Yogi inaugurates super speciality block in Kanpur hospital

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday inaugurated a super speciality block at a state-run medical college here. Partha not to reconsider teachers' mobile ban at exam hall

The West Bengal government has turned down the plea of teachers to allow them carry mobile phones inside centres during the ongoing Higher Secondary Examinations, class 12 state board examination, to prevent possibilities of question paper leak. When he met representatives of teachers' associations of the state, some of them made a plea to reconsider the decision of West Bengal Higher Secondary Council (WBHSC) not to allow teachers carry mobiles inside the examination centres, Chatterjee said here. "But I posed a counter query: who will own up the responsibility for a question paper leak? Who will take the responsibility if there is any incident?" the minister told reporters on Tuesday night after the meeting. He called upon the teachers to ensure that the rule was strictly enforced. Beware of rumours on social media ahead of exams: CSBE to students, parents

The CBSE has advised students and parents to be aware of any rumours on social media ahead of board examinations and not panic. "It has been noticed in the past that certain unscrupulous elements spread rumours by posting fake videos and messages on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms, obviously with the intention of spreading confusion and panic among students, parents, schools and public," the CBSE Controller said in a public notice. "Persons involved in such activities are warned and advised to restrain themselves from such activities. In case, any such information comes to the notice of the CBSE, immediate necessary actions will be taken as per law," he added. 5 students caught with mobiles on first day of HS examination

Five students were caught while trying to enter the examination hall carrying mobile phones on the first day of the higher secondary examinations Tuesday, an official of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education said. The Council had warned students that their registration number could be cancelled if they carry mobile phones in examination halls. While four of the students are from Malda, another one is from Howrah district, the official said adding while the five will not be allowed to sit for any other papers, steps were also being taken to cancel their registration. Three of the candidates are girls all sitting from a particular school in Malda, while the fourth one was from a boy's school in the same district. The fifth candidate was from a boys' school of Howrah. BSE cancels English paper in 3 examination centers

The Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha Tuesday decided to cancel the ongoing Matriculation (class 10) examination held on Monday in three centers as the examination was held in these centers in "most unfair and disruptive manner." The three centres are located in the districts of Balangir, Dhenkanal and Cuttack, said an official. The students wrote their second language English paper on Monday. "Based on the preliminary reports submitted by the respective district education officers (DEOs) and center superintendents, the examination committee of the Board has decided to cancel the Mondays paper of all the students who are writing their examinations at these centers, informed BSE president Jahan Ara Begum. JU engineering faculty meets on domicile issue

The faculty council of engineering and technology department of the Jadavpur University Tuesday held a meeting on introducing a domicile policy for admission for BE courses to 16 departments in 2019-20, a faculty official said. If a domicile policy comes into effect in the JU, a certain percentage of the seats would be reserved for 'home students' those having passed their Plus-II exams from West Bengal. The meeting decided to forward the issue to the Executive Council (EC), the highest decision making body of the university. New web portal to provide real-time data on WB schools

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee Tuesday inaugurated a web portal, which is set to provide real-time data on state-run and aided schools. The portal, 'Banglar Shiksha' (banglarshiksha.gov.in), will be up and running in two months' time, he said. The minister also urged his department officials to update it from time to time with relevant information. "This is probably the first-of-its-kind online initiative in the state as well as in the country. It will be operated on a trial basis for two months to remove glitches, if any. Delhi govt allocates over Rs 15,000 crore to education, 2 new varsities on the cards

Two new universities, an MBA course in family business and funds for developing students' business plans are among the initiatives announced by the Delhi government on Tuesday in its 2019-20 budget for the education sector. The budget was presented by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the Delhi Assembly and the government has allocated over Rs 15,601 crore for the sector. Sisodia in his budget speech said the allocation to the education sector is around 26 per cent of the total budget. "In the previous years the allocation for the education (sector) was around 24-25 per cent of the total budget," he said. "The education sector has the highest share of 26 pc of the total budget allocation in 2019-20.
