JU forms probe panel to look into Feb 19 incident

Jadavpur University Pro-VC Dr Pradip Kumar Ghosh Friday said an inquiry committee will be formed to look into the circumstances behind the incidents on Feburary 19 which led to the alleged assault of Vice-Chancellor Prof Suranjan Das by some students . Ghosh told reporters that the composition and other details of the committee will be decided next week. A scuffle broke out on February 19, between two groups of students, who wanted to approach the VC with their demands as soon as he stepped out of his office after the EC meeting. Das, who fell to the ground, was admitted to a private hospital as his blood pressure shot up but was discharged on February 21. Das, after Tuesday's incident, told reporters that he felt insulted and humiliated and was physically heckled by the students which had never happened in his life in past. Bedi sees need to include Pondy history in school curriculum

: Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi Friday stressed the need forthe Directorate of School Education here to include history of the Union Territory and also its geographical features in the school curriculum. Paying a visit to the directorate to ascertain the implementation of decisions taken during her earlier visit, the Lieutenant Governor said the school curriculum should acquaint the children with the history and also geographical features of Puducherry. Teacher gets 3 years in jail for sexually assaulting student

A court here Friday sentenced a tuition teacher to three years' imprisonment for sexually assaulting a ten-year-old student. Pradeep Singh (30) was found guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The victim, a Class 5 student, attended Singh's tuitions. In January 2015, the girl told her mother that Singh made her sit close to him and touched her inappropriately. He threatened to beat her if she told anybody about this, the girl said. Police arrested Singh after the girl's mother lodged a complaint. Apart from POCSO provisions, special judge S J Gharat also convicted Singh under IPC section 506 (criminal intimidation), said prosecutor Vinod More.

We do not have Aladdin's magic lamp: Punjab minister

Hitting out at an AAP MLA who claimed that no new degree colleges were opened in some areas in Sangrur district, Punjab Higher Education Minister Razia Sultana Friday said her department did not have Aladdin's magic lamp which, if rubbed, would set up a building in no time. The minister was replying to a supplementary question by Leader of Opposition and AAP MLA Harpal Singh Cheema who sought to know the status of degree colleges in Bhawanigarh, Dirba and some other areas in Sangrur district. Cheema claimed in the House that not even a single degree college had been opened in these areas. Moreover, the no recruitment of staff has been made in Punjab colleges, he alleged. UGC writes to varsities across country to ensure safety of Kashmiri students

In the wake of attack on Kashmiri students after the Pulwama incident, the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday wrote to vice-chancellors of varsities across the country to ensure safety of Kashmiri students on the campus and to maintain peace and harmony. The UGC was directed by the Human Resource Development Ministry to issue an advisory to all the universities to ensure that the security of Kashmiri students is not compromised. "In the context of reports being received through various media regarding the safety of students from Kashmir studying in various higher educational institutions, all universities and colleges affiliated to them are advised to ensure the safety and protection of the students on the campus. They may keep a watch on the situation and seek support of law and order machinery in case of any untoward incident," the UGC letter said. College students held on sedition charge

Two college students were arrested here on sedition charges for allegedly putting up "anti-national" posters seeking independence for Kashmir and Manipur, police said Friday. The duo-Mohammed Rinshad (20) and Mohammed Farris (19), pursuing graduation at the Government College Malappuram, were arrested following the complaint of the principal, they said. According to police, the students, under the aegis of an outfit 'Radical Students Forum', had allegedly pasted the posters on the portico of the college campus. The complaint was lodged after the students told the principal that they stood by the posters, which could be read as "azadi for Kashmir and Manipur", a police official told PTI. Both were charged under IPC section 124A (sedition), he said, adding that they were produced before the magistrate and remanded to police custody for four days.

'Return of students from outside colleges biggest challenge for Kashmiri society'

Terming the return of Kashmiri students from outside colleges as the "biggest challenge" before the society, Private Schools' Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) and Coaching Centres' Association of Kashmir (CCAK) Friday called for joint efforts to cope up with the issue. In a joint press conference here, the associations also called for keeping education apolitical. Police drop sedition charges against 14 AMU students

The police have dropped sedition charges slapped against 14 Aligarh Muslim University after the recent protests on the campus, citing lack of evidence. The students were booked for sedition after Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) district president Mukesh Lodhi alleged he was assaulted by some students who chanted pro-Pakistan slogans, police said. Senior Superintendent of Police Akash Kulhari said Friday the charges were dropped three days back as there is no evidence to support them. He said there is no videographic proof or any other evidence to support the claim that anti-India or pro-Pakistan slogans were raised by these boys during the clash between two student groups at University Circle on February 12". Guj: After GSRTC staff, over 2 lakh teachers launch stir

A day after Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) employees proceeded on mass casual leave over wage issues, hundreds of primary school teachers in the state followed suit Friday. Over two lakh teachers Friday went on mass casual leave and also tried to protest outside the Gujarat Assembly, where the last day of the session is underway. Officials said almost all primary schools in the state remained closed on Friday because of the teachers' stir. Gurugram: Case filed in alleged molestation of 3-year-old in private school

A three-year-old girl was allegedly molested inside the toilet of a private school in Gurugram and a case has been registered in this connection, police said.The case has been registered based on a complaint by the girl's father.Shamsher Singh, ACP Crime, Gurugram Police said: "A case of molestation of a three-year-old student at a private school has come to light. We have registered the case and investigation is underway."It is alleged that a non-teaching employee of the school had molested the student in the school's toilet. The child later narrated the ordeal to her parents, who filed a complaint.In 2017, a Class II student, Pradyuman Thakur, was found dead inside his Gurugram school premises. Thakur's body was found, with his throat slit, in the school's washroom.The incident invited a nationwide outrage and raised questions over the safety of children in schools.
