Clarifying on their statements of not granting admission to students from Kashmir, two city-based colleges Tuesday said they were under pressure and no decision of such sort has been taken by their management. "We had to do it under pressure from a mob of around 400-500 which was protesting at the gates demanding expulsion of Kashmiri students from the institute and an assurance in writing that the new ones will not be granted admission following the terrorist attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama," Chairman of Alpine College of Management and Technology, Anil Saini, told PTI. "What the institute administration gave in writing to the protesting mob was to ensure the safety of the Kashmiri students," he added. School teacher quits after backlash over FB post on Pulwama attack

A teacher of a reputed school has resigned after protests erupted over one of his Facebook posts, which did not favour describing the CRPF personnel killed in the Pulwama attack as "martyrs". Chitradeep Som, a 36-year-old history teacher, said the school forced him to quit for his February 15 post, questioning the logic behind hailing the jawans as martyrs "as they were just doing their duty". His stance on social media resulted in a huge backlash with many people accusing him of insulting the security forces. Som said the netizens complained against him to the school authorities and his house was attacked on Sunday by a mob, forcing him to shift to a relative's place. "On Monday, the school authorities asked me to meet them immediately. Thereafter, I was forced to resign," he said. The teacher, however, stood his ground and argued that expressing opinion wasn't a mistake. "I don't think I committed any mistake by expressing my opinion and I never intended to malign our forces. China province defends ban on Tibetan lessons

Chinese authorities on Monday defended a ban on schoolchildren attending informal Tibetan language classes taught by Buddhist monks in western China, as religious and cultural freedoms in the country come under increasing pressure. A county in western Qinghai -- a province with a large Tibetan population that is mostly Buddhist -- in December ordered an immediate halt to informal language classes taught by monks during the winter school holidays. The lessons taught in monasteries in the province bordering Tibet have gained popularity among parents as a way for their children to learn a language that is being sidelined from the official curriculum. It follows a similar ban last summer barring Tibetan students from taking part in religious activities during their holidays. The provincial government on Monday told AFP that the lessons were "illegal" and said the monasteries were "safety hazards" as well as being "ill-equipped" to teach students. "According to Chinese law... education is .
