Winter vacations in schools in Multhan sub tehsil of Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district have been further extended by five days due to damaged roads after heavy snowfall last week, an official said Wednesday. The schools which were to reopen on Wednesday will now start from February 18, he said. In his order, Kangra District Magistrate Sandeep Kumar said the schools in Multhan sub tehsil would now remain closed till February 17. The decision to again extend the school holidays was taken in the interest of safety of the students and staff as several roads had been damaged after heavy snowfall last week, Kumar added. In his earlier order issued on February 10, he extended the winter vacation of Multhan schools by two days. Similarly, Kullu District Magistrate Yunus had extended schools' winter vacations by four days on Tuesday, following prediction of heavy rain and snowfall.

Fourteen Aligarh Muslim University students, including their union chief, were booked under sedition charges after protests on the campus following reports of a planned visit by AIMIM lawmaker Asaduddin Owaisi, officials said Wednesday. On Tuesday, some AMU students allegedly had an altercation with a TV channel crew which had come to film the visit that ultimately did not take place, they said. The explosion took place inside the school in Narbal village of Kakapora area in the south Kashmir district this afternoon, a police official said. He said at least 12 students of class 10 were injured in the blast that rocked the school when they were taking winter tuition. The injured students have been rushed to a hospital for treatment and there condition is stated to be stable, the official said. He said police officers have reached the spot and are ascertaining the nature and circumstances of the blast. A case has been registered and investigation taken up.

In a major relief to students, the Meghalaya government has put a cap on the weight of schoolbags for all classes and set restrictions on homework for classes 1 and 2. According to the state education department, the official order issued to the school authorities is in tune with the directives of the Union Human Resources Development Ministry. "We have issued instructions via a notification, setting limits on the weight of school bags. This is in line with the guidelines of the Union Human Resources Development Ministry, keeping in mind that the weights the children carry affect their health," Education Principal Secretary D P Wahlang told PTI. The department has also asked the heads of institutions to ensure that timetables are designed in a way that students do not have to carry too many books or notebooks to school.
