Purvanchal University Vice-Chacellor Raja Ram Yadav stoked up controversy on Sunday as he promoted violence while addressing students of the varsity and encouraged students to commit murders.Addressing a college function, Yadav said, "A student of the Purvanchal University is one who fulfills whatever aspiration he holds in life. Daribhit incident: DI's suspension withdrawn

The West Bengal government has withdrawn the suspension of District Inspector of Schools (DI) of North Dinajpur and posted him at the headquarters of the School Education Department, an official said Sunday. The DI was suspended following the death of two youths in a clash between the police and a mob in front of Daribhit High School in North Dinajpur on September 20. A department official said on Sunday, The suspension was withdrawn on Thursday and Mondal was given posting at Bikash Bhavan, the headquarters of the School Education Department here. Mondal had been suspended after the deaths of Tapas Barman and Rajesh Sarkar, two former students of the high school, during the clash over appointment of two teachers of Urdu and Sanskrit, which was resented by students of the school as they wanted English teachers. IIEST alumni to take part in 'nostalia' run for charity

A group of former Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) students will come together for a 'nostalgic' run along a 10-km stretch from the city as part of charity. The 2018 edition of 'Route 55' -- a tribute to the lone bus route between the campus in Howrah district and central Kolkata's Esplanade area till 1999 -- will see participation of alumni from 15 cities in India and abroad on December 30. First started in 2013 by 10 former students of IIEST, earlier known as Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), the initiative strives to give back to society as well as advocate personal fitness, the organisers said. Naqvi calls for educational empowerment of weaker sections

Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Saturday called for "educational and social empowerment" of the weaker sections of the society to stop their "political exploitation". He also said that "development without discrimination" is the priority of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government. Naqvi Saturday laid the foundation stone for a school building, library, laboratory facilities etc. at Dr MIJ Girls High School and Junior College in suburban Bandra which is run by Anjuman-e-Islam. The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has issued a circular, asking principals, teachers and students of its schools to use the Kaizala application for effective communication. In July last year, tech giant Microsoft had launched Kaizala -- a productivity application designed for the Indian market to enable large-group communication and work management. Thousands of youth to hold march in Delhi on Feb 7

Thousands of youngsters from across the country will hold a march in the national capital on February 7 to demand education and jobs, a youth organisation said Friday. Over 5,500 tribal students got higher-education fellowships in last 3 years: Govt

The Centre has awarded fellowships to over 5,500 Scheduled Tribe students under a scheme in the last three years, the Parliament has been informed. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has decided to implement the 'National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST students' -- under which 750 fellowships and scholarships are awarded to meritorious tribal students every year -- on its own from 2017-18. Earlier, the University Grants Commission was responsible for its implementation. The government spent Rs 31.38 crore on the scheme in 2015-16 and awarded fellowships to 1,408 tribal students, according to the data provided by Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Jasvantsinh Bhabor in the Rajya Sabha. It spent Rs 73.12 crore in 2016-17 and awarded fellowships to 2,197 beneficiaries. In 2017-18, as many as 2,078 Scheduled Tribe students were given fellowships and Rs 70.22 crore was spent on the scheme. Tripura cabinet clears way to replace Left-era school syllabus

The Tripura government has paved way for replacing the state school syllabus prevalent under the pervious Left Front regime with NCERT curriculum in all state-run and aided schools from the next academic session, beginning April 2019. A meeting of the state cabinet late Thursday evening gave its nod to the proposal to change the curriculum. The BJP-Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) government shortly after coming to power in March after ending the 25 year-rule of the Left Front had set up an expert committee for reviewing the school syllabus. Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath told reporters that the change would enable the students of the state to be as "competitive" as students of the other states. He said the change in curriculum will also take the state's education system to the national level. 4,305 journals removed from UGC-approved list: Minister

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has removed 4,305 journals from its list of approved journals based on "careful scrutiny and analysis", Minister of State for HRD Satya Pal Singh informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday. The UGC currently recognises three categories of journals -- journals indexed in "Web of Science or Scopus", those recommended by the Standing Committee and the Language Committee, and journals recommended by the universities, Singh said in response to a question. The UGC's Standing Committee on notification of journals has decided that the recommendation portal will now be opened once every year and the universities will be asked to recommend journals, he said. Further, from this year onwards, every recommendation submitted by the universities will be re-verified under the supervision of the Standing Committee on notification of journals, to ascertain that only good quality journals are included in the UGC-approved list with correct publication details.
