Khatun, who hails from Howrah district, secured 52 per cent marks in the eligibility test, results of which were announced on October 11. Another board official said the girl's father Mohammed Ainul had moved the WBBSE to allow her to sit for the Madhyamik Examination 2019. The last such instance of an external candidate appearing in the board examination before the minimum age was in the early 90s, the official said.

HC pulls up Mumbai University for staff shortage submission

The Bombay High Court Friday rapped the Mumbai University for its submission on staff shortage to justify a new '60-40 evaluation system' for Law students. The university, which filed an affidavit through its registrar, said that it had introduced the new evaluation system, comprising a semester-end exam for 60 marks and internal assessments, class projects etc for 40 marks, to avoid delays in evaluation of examination papers and the declaration of result. In the affidavit, the university said that, in the past, exam result had been delayed because of a shortage of staff to evaluate answer sheets. It said that for the 53 Law colleges under its jurisdiction, it only had 47 permanent teachers and added that often guest lecturers and lawyers had to fill in to conduct classes in these colleges. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and MS Karnik, however, took strong exception to the university's submission on the shortage of staff. "Why don't you put a lock and close down the university?" the ...

Professor shot dead in Cameroon's restive anglophone region

Gunmen have killed a linguistics professor in francophone Cameroon's volatile English-speaking Northwest Region, hit by a bloody separatist campaign and a brutal security crackdown, a university official said Friday. Paul Kuban Mbufong was shot dead on Thursday while going to work in the University of Bamenda, the institution's rector, Emmanuel Suh Cheo, said in a statement. "He was killed by unidentified attackers who followed him to the place where he tried to hide" behind a nearby town hall, Cheo said, calling it a "macabre act". University staff said the murder of the academic, who was also in charge of administration, bore the hallmarks of the "Amba boys," or separatists fighting for an independent English-speaking state called Ambazonia. The two anglophone regions in western Cameroon are the site of an uprising by armed separatists, who have also called for a boycott of local schools. They argue the French-language education system penalises English-speaking students. Since the .

4 US colleges file lawsuit against Trump admin for changes in foreign student visa policy

Four US colleges, which depend heavily on foreign students including those from India, have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration's recent changes in the student visa policy, saying it would impact America's standing as a center of global education. The lawsuit -- filed in a District Court in North Carolina by Guilford College International Club in North Carolina, The New School from New York City, Foothill-De Anza Community College District in California and Haverford College -- alleges that the latest move would make it difficult for foreign students to come to America. It also said that the changes by the Department of Homeland Security in August to non-immigrant visas could make it easier to bar international students from the US for periods of three or 10 years if they fall out of status. "The new policy's use of a backdated unlawful-presence clock will render tens of thousands of F, J, and M visa holders subject to three- and 10-year reentry bars without any ...

College asks students to wear 'proper uniform', invites MLA's wrath

An MLA of the opposition AIUDF has charged the authorities of a premier college in Assam's Nagaon district with "saffronising" the college environment by asking the students to wear "proper uniform". There cannot be any harm if some girl students go to college in 'hijab' (veil worn by Muslim women) and 'niqab' (clothing that covers the face), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam said in a Facebook post. Principal of Anandaram Dhekial Phookan (ADP) College Dr Surajit Kumar Bhagowati on Friday said he did not ban any religious outfit and only issued a notice before the Autumn vacation asking students to wear "proper uniform". Of the 20 per cent Muslim students of the college, only the MLA's daughter comes in burqa, Bhagowati said, adding that he was feeling threatened and has lodged a police complaint over the Facebook post of the AIUDF leader. In his October 24 post, Islam said, "No such decision (banning religious outfits) was taken in the last 60 years of the ...

HC asks AAP govt, Centre to sit together and decide fate of 99-yr-old dilapidated school

The Delhi High Court on Friday asked the Centre and the AAP government to sit together and work out a solution regarding the future of a 99-year-old school, which is in a dilapidated state, and the students studying there. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao said the "endeavour at first instance" should be to provide a suitable alternative site to shift the Rajputana Rifles Heroes Memorial Senior Secondary School, currently located in Delhi Cantonment, and the second option ought to be accommodating the students in other schools. The direction by the court came after the Ministry of Defence said the land where the school is located cannot be handed over to the Delhi government for setting up a new institute. "Handing over the land in question is out of the question," the ministry told the bench. The Delhi government, on the other hand, said that while it can accommodate the students in other schools, it needs the school in question as its other educational ...
