25 'erring' teachers suspended in J&K

As many as 25 teachers were suspended on charge of dereliction of duty in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said Thursday. During inspection of schools in Thanamandi Block of Rajouri district, officials found a number of teachers not checking home assignments of students or even teaching them as per the duty schedule, a senior authority said, adding that 25 erring teachers were suspended. The officials carried out the inspections after repeated complaints from the public, the official said. The inspection team was led by Joint Director of Education Abdul Hamid.

Teachers strike: Odisha to adopt 'No Work No Pay' policy

Odisha government has decided to adopt the 'No Work No Pay' policy with regard to the strike by the block grant teachers and lecturers, an official said Thursday. Teachers, lecturers and other employees of 4,000 block grant schools and 1500 colleges on September 24 resumed duty after a 42-days of strike. "It has been decided to adopt the principle of 'No Work No Pay' in respect of the officers/ officials those who have participated in the strike neglecting their official assignments since long," additional secretary in the School and Mass Education department, Prabhat Kumar Bhoi said in a letter to all directors of the department. Bhoi also instructed the directors to report compliance to the School and Mass Education department for kind appraisal of the department secretary. Manipur bandh partially hit normal life

A 48-hour bandh called by six students' organisations, demanding "unconditional release" of 15 arrested students and teachers of Manipur University, partially hit normal life in the state Thursday, officials said. All shops in the busy markets of the capital -- Paona and Thangal Bazaar -- were closed. Most vehicles were not plying and educational institutions remained closed, they said. The Manipur government offices were open and employees reported for duty in good numbers. Petrol and fuel stations were open as those were guarded by security personnel, the officials added. Chief Secretary J Suresh Babu has instructed department heads and deputy commissioners across the state to ensure attendance of all staff. CM requests British Council to help youths of the state

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu Thursday requested the British Council to help the youths of the state in the field of education, music, culture and sports. Khandu told the British Council Director Alan Gemmel that the state government is looking forward to the councils expertise in teaching English, which would improve soft skills of students and give them the edge for employability, an official release said. He also requested the council for support to the youths of the state in the field of education, music, culture and sports, it said. Gemmel discussed with the chief minister on modalities to improve the education scenario in the state. He informed Khandu that the council is getting into an agreement through MoU with North Eastern Council (NEC) in a week that will allow them to train teachers in English language in the Northeast.

Bihar: Students made to sleep on street, teacher suspended

A school teacher has been suspended for making students, who had gone on an excursion, sleep on the street after their bus broke down on Tuesday night.The students from a school in East Champaran district had gone on an excursion as part of the Mukhyamantri Bihar Darshan Yojna. Apparently the children were made to sleep on the road outside the Patna zoo as the bus in which they were travelling broke down.The zoo is situated near the Chief Minister's residence but no help was extended to the stranded students. However, as soon as the matter was brought to the notice of the administration, the state government suspended Anand Singh, the teacher who was accompanying the students.

Two thrashed after harassing women in separate incidents in UP

Two men allegedly harassed girl students in the district in Uttar Pradesh in separate incidents following which they were thrashed by onlookers, police said Thursday. According to SHO DK Tyagi, a man harassed a girl when she was going for her tuition near Meenakshi Chowk here. Sadik was thrashed by a crowd which handed him over to the police later. A case was registered against him and he was arrested, the SHO said. In the second incident, a girl was harassed by a man when she was on her way to college on Bhopa road. He was thrashed by people who later handed him to the police. A case was registered against Anmol Sharma and he was arrested. The victim alleged that she was being harassed from some days on her way to college.

China executes man who stabbed nine children to death

A man whose brutal knife attack left nine schoolchildren dead and injured 12 others was executed in China on Thursday. Zhao Zewei was sentenced to death in July for the massacre -- reportedly motivated by a grudge against the school in northern Shaanxi province, which he had attended as a child. The defendant "intentionally deprived others of their lives," the court that handed down the decision said in a statement on its official social media account. "Because his work and life were not going well, Zhao Zewei held a grudge in his heart and took it out on innocents," it said. The April attack on the Number Three Middle School came as children were heading home from class. At the time, Zhao told police he had been "bullied" when he attended the school as a child, "hated" his classmates and decided to use a "dagger" to exact revenge. Residential school director held for raping 5 students

At least five students, some of them minor, were allegedly raped and three others molested by the director of a residential school for tribals in Maharashtra's Sangli district, police said Wednesday. The accused, who has been arrested, sexually exploited the students after promising them good marks in exams and providing free education in the school, they said. The school is located at Kurlap in Walva tehsil of Sangli in western Maharashtra, a police official said. The director, Arvind Pawar (61), used to approach the victims through his aide Manisha Kamble (40) with the promise of free food, free education and good marks in exams, he said. Manipur CM urges students to withdraw their call for 48-hour bandh

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh appealed to several student organisations to withdraw their call for a 48-hour state-wide bandh beginning from Wednesday midnight, demanding release of the arrested teachers and students of the Manipur University. The chief minister said any issue can be resolved through dialogue and his government is ready to hold talks with the students anywhere and anytime. The bandh call was given after 89 students and six teachers of the Manipur University were arrested on September 21 following an agitation on the institute's campus the day before. Suspended Manipur VC fails to appear before probe panel

Suspended vice-chancellor of Manipur University Prof Aditya Prasad Pandey, against whom a probe has been initiated, failed to "appear in person" before the enquiry committee on Wednesday, a statement issued by the panel said here. The two-member committee had asked him to appear in person for three consecutive days starting Wednesday when all the witnesses will be examined. The Committee, headed by retired Justice Th Nandakumar of the Meghalaya High Court, was instituted by Ministry of Human Resources Development, to probe the charges of financial and administrative irregularities committed by Pandey. Bihar teacher suspended for making students sleep on roadside

A government school teacher posted in East Champaran district of Bihar was on Wednesday placed under suspension for making a group of students sleep on the roadside while they were on a tour of the state capital. Anand Kumar Singh, principal of a secondary school in East Champarans Kotwa block, was suspended by an order of the District Education Officer which took note of media reports of students having been made to sleep on the roadside earlier this week. Girls banned from wearing skirts, jeans at Govt Medical College of Amritsar

The Government Medical College (GMC) of Amritsar has banned girls from wearing skirts, t-shirts, jeans and shorts in the college premises. Boys have also been asked to wear formal trousers instead of jeans, according to a circular issued by college Principal Sujata Sharma. The head of the department has been asked to ensure that the dress code is followed by all the students, it said. The new dress code will come into effect from October 1. A group of students, led by their leader Mansimrat Singh, Wednesday met the college principal, requesting her to withdraw the circular. However, Sharma declined to withdraw it, the students said.

BHU violence: Students made to vacate 5 varsity hostels

Five hostels of Banaras Hindu University were vacated Wednesday and the security in and around the campus was heightened with the police maintaining security using drone cameras, said officials. The five hostels whose boarders were ordered to move out were Birla, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Dhanwantri, Ruiya Medical and Ruiya Annexe. The students of Birla and Lal Bahadur Shastri hostel sat on a dharna on Tuesday, demanding revocation of yesterday's hostel vacation order. The students' dharna ended late on Tuesday night (around 2 am) after District Magistrate Surendra Singh met them and promised strict action against outsiders who 'instigated' violence in the campus. The students vacated their hostel rooms by 5.00 pm on Wednesday.
