The AICTE is setting up four teacher training academies in the country which will equip candidates with the latest changes in technical education, the council's Chairman Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe said Sunday. A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in a government school in Madhya Pradesh's Korba district after she was reportedly reprimanded by her teacher for using a mobile phone during class, police said Sunday. Babli Yadav, a Class IX student, hung herself from a tree in the premises of the government high school in Nonbirra village Saturday afternoon, Dipka station house officer (SHO) Sharad Chandra said. He said that preliminary investigation has revealed that Yadav was spotted by her teacher while she was speaking on her mobile phone during class. "Yadav threw the phone from the class window but the teacher retrieved it and complained to the school principal. She also scolded Yadav," the SHO said. A boys' primary school was blown up on Sunday by the Taliban in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal region bordering Afghanistan. It was the only school in Chitral district's Arandu village, a remote area in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The attack, carried out through bombs planted around the boundary wall, has demolished two rooms and partially damaged the main building, police said. A senior police officer said that 80 to 90 students are enrolled in the school. No one was injured as the school was closed due to Sunday. The Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) has said that they will sit for talks to end a month-long agitation only after their demands, including "unconditional release" of 15 teachers and students, are met. The Madhya Pradesh government on Saturday announced the creation of a new district 'Niwari'.The new district would include three tehsils of the present Tikamgarh district - Niwari, Orchha and Prithvipur. The government's decision will come into effect from October 1.With Niwari, the total number of districts in the state now stands at 52. The Delhi University's executive council has deferred taking a decision on the signing of an MoU among the varsity, HRD Ministry and the UGC over funds even after extensive deliberations, an official said Saturday. The meeting of the executive council (EC) started Thursday and the zero hour lasted till 3 am Friday. It resumed 12 hours later, but was adjourned 3 am Saturday, an EC member said, adding that it will meet again on October 3. The contentious issue of whether the varsity should sign the MoU to continue receiving funds from the University Grants Commission (UGC), was deferred for the next meeting, another EC member said. The UGC had shared the draft with the university and a committee of the EC was formed to study and revise it. A group of students in a college of West Bengal's Murshidabad district turned violent on Saturday while submitting a deputation complaining of irregular attendance of teachers and lack of basic facilities.
The Calcutta University authorities Saturday asked affiliated colleges to ensure that students were not allowed to appear for examinations if their attendance is below 60 per cent, a university official said. Pro-Vice Chancellor (academic) Dipak Kar informed principals of several colleges at a meeting that 60 per cent attendance is a must for appearing in examinations for under-graduate and post-graduate courses. Kar also said at the meeting that there would be more Multiple Choice-type Questions (MCQ) across all streams from the next academic session. From the next academic session, Bengali, English and Environment answer sheets will be in Optical Mark Reader (OMR) format, the official said. It was also decided at the meeting that students will not be given honours if they failed to get below 40 per cent marks in a stream and will not be eligible for pass if they secured below 30 per cent marks in both theory and practical, the official said.
Students of Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) protesting against Vice Chancellor Dr Sukhpal Singh Saturday decided to go on an indefinite strike from October 1.
