The counting for Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections was suspended midway Thursday due to "faulty EVMs and the students' uproar over it", an university official said. The counting was initially stopped for an hour when there were allegations of faulty EVMs, however, following objections by students the election officials decided to suspend the counting. "We had proposed rectification of the faulty EVMs and resumption of the counting but the students were not ready for it. It was decided to suspend counting. A fresh date for the counting will be announced soon," an election officer for DUSU polls said. In the initial trends, Congress-backed NSUI was leading for the president post, while BJP-affiliated ABVP was leading for the vice president's post. At least ten Banaras Hindu University students were detained for allegedly creating a ruckus inside the campus over the eating of mess food on Tuesday morning, police said. A group of students of Birla hostel took some outsiders along with them to the mess of Aiyyar hostel, to which the students of the Aiyyar hostel protested, police said. The group returned with hockey sticks, iron rods and vandalised the Aiyyar hostel and also started beating up the students. They threw away all the belongings, broke laptops and mobile phones, and damaged over half-a-dozen bikes parked outside the hostel, they said. The agitating students of the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) in Nadia district blocked a road Wednesday alleging that they were attacked by outsiders inside the campus, police said. The students blocked the Haringhata-Kanchrapara road in front of the university demanding action against outsiders who entered the campus and allegedly attacked them, the police said. The Jammu and Kashmir administration said on Wednesday that it would bear the school expenses of the children of policemen killed in militancy-related violence in the state. The state administrative council (SAC), which met here under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik, approved the proposal of bearing the education expenses of up to two children of such personnel till Class XII. It would be borne by the education department, an official spokesperson said. It also sanctioned the enhancement of the ex-gratia to the families of such personnel. It will enhance the existing cumulative ex-gratia relief from Rs 48 lakh to Rs 70 lakh for police personnel and from Rs 14.5 lakh to Rs 30 lakh for special police officers.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court Wednesday directed the state principal secretary (education) to be present in the court and inform it about the steps taken by the state government for filling up the vacant posts in the Education Department. The high court also directed him to file a personal affidavit responding to the issues raised by an amicus curiae. The amicus curiae has raised the issues regarding failure of the state government in filling up vacancies in schools, implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act and compliance of the orders passed by the Supreme Court and the high court. Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta has featured as the number two B-School in the country and number three in Asia as per the result of the 2018 edition of a prominent global ranking of masters in management, an IIM-C statement said Wednesday. The statement said as per the the 2018 Financial Times (FT) ranking of masters in management (MIM) globally, IIM Calcutta is ranked at 23 by improving its rank from 28 last year. The 2018 Financial Times ranking put IIM-C as the number two B-school in the country and number three in Asia. A total of 104 B-schools took part globally in this year's edition of the FT MIM survey. The Odisha government Wednesday appealed to the agitating block grant teachers to withdraw their agitation and return to schools and colleges. The teachers are on indefinite agitation since August 16 demanding fulfilment of their demands including revision in the newly implemented grant-in-aid system which the state government introduced after abolishing the block grant system in October last year. The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down a Kerala Ordinance that had nullified its 2017 order freezing illegal admissions to two medical colleges in the state. A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and Indira Banerjee declared as 'ultra vires' and set aside the Kerala Professional Colleges (Regularisation of Admission in Medical Colleges) Ordinance 2017, against which the Medical Council of India (MCI) had approached the apex court last April. The top court had on April 6 rapped the Kerala government for promulgating the ordinance nullifying its 2017 order freezing illegal admissions to two medical colleges in the state and had stayed its operation. The MCI had moved the apex court against regularisation of these admissions made in self-financing in Kannur and Karuna medical colleges in 2016-17.
