Maha draft coaching class regulatory bill ready, says Tawde

An experts' committee formed to prepare the draft Maharashtra Private Coaching Classes Regulatory Bill has submitted its report to the government and action had begun on it, state Education Minister Vinod Tawde said today. Tawde made the statement in response to concerns raised by Assembly members, from both the ruling and opposition parties, over private coaching classes allegedly cheating and looting parents of school students as well as candidates appearing for competitive examinations. The members of the House also questioned poor attendance of students in schools on whose premises integrated coaching classes were being run. Tawde said biometric attendance systems would be installed in such schools to combat absenteeism. Dharurkar takes charges as VC of Tripura Central University

Prof Vijaykumar Laxmikantrao Dharurkar today charge as the new Vice-Chancellor of the Tripura Central University. "We will do everything to increase the pride of this university and turn it into a centre of excellence for higher education. I am confident Tripura University will lead entire Northeastern India in higher education," Dharukar said after taking charge. The new vice-chancellor hoped that Tripura University will become a model university and would contribute to socio-economic and cultural development in eastern India. "There is a slogan - Look East but we have to Act East ... I have decided to conduct research on tribals problems to alleviate their lives and to fulfil their dreams, aspirations for contribution in nation building," he said. 8-yr-old girl student allegedly raped by teacher in Hisar

An eight-year-old girl student was allegedly raped by a teacher at the government girls school in Narnaund area of the district, police said today. The incident took place on Friday when the junior basic training teacher identified as Satywan allegedly took the girl inside a bathroom and sexually assaulted her, they said. The victim told about the incident to her parents when she had a stomach ache. The medical examination of the girl confirmed rape, they added. The Teacher was booked under relevant sections of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and a case was registered at Bass police chowki, they said. After the incident, the district education officer visited the school and ordered the transfer of the entire staff and appointed women teachers in the girls school.

Guardians of fasting students threaten to join 7-day-old stir

Guardians of the six fasting senior students of state-run Calcutta Medical College and Hospital expressed support to their wards' stir and threatened to join the hunger strike which entered seventh day today. The students of second, third and fourth year were on hunger strike to press for their demand for accommodation in a new hostel which is allotted only for first year students. "The old hostel building of the senior students is in poor shape. We are on the side of our children in this agitation," one of the guardians told reporters in the hospital compound today. "If their demand was not looked into by tomorrow, we will join the hunger strike," he said. The guardians said a deputation will be submitted to the college Principal Uchhal Bhadra on behalf of the guardians urging for immediate steps to solve the impasse. HC directs authorities to ensure no defacement of prop during DUSU polls

The Delhi High Court today directed the Centre, Delhi University and the city police to ensure no defacement of public property during the upcoming DUSU elections and give wide publicity to the penal consequences of such actions. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said defacement of public property did not only mean putting pictures or writing over the property, it also included pasting posters and putting hoardings. It asked the authorities to take steps forthwith. The bench also asked the authorities to give widespread publicity in all the colleges and campus of Delhi University to the penal provisions for the offence of defacing public properties. The court was informed that the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections are likely to be held in September. Ahmedabad primary civic school students to get free haircuts

Primary students of the Ahmedabad's municipal schools will get a free haircut every month as part of the local civic corporation's 'Ek Kadam Swachhate Ki Aur' programme, a senior official said today. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation inked an agreement with the International School of Aesthetics and Spa (ISAS), an NGO, to implement the programme which will see 1.25 lakh students studying in 380 civic schools getting a free haircut every month, he said. "We have entered into an agreement with an NGO under which they will cut hair of primary school students for free. The programme will begin later this month or in the first week of August," L D Desai, Administrative Officer of AMC School Board, told PTI. He said the consent of the students and their parents would be sought, adding that men will give haircuts to boys and women to girls. Medical College students' fast enters 6th day

The indefinite fast of six students of the state run Calcutta Medical College and Hospital entered sixth day today. The fast was undertaken to press for their demand for accommodation in a new hostel which is allotted only for first year students, the agitating students said. Principal Uchhal Bhadra, in a fresh appeal, today urged the students to withdraw the fast. "With the admission process to the first year going on, I urge the students not to continue the fast. We will sympathetically consider their problem. We are ready for dialogues any moment. We had previously held talks on July 13. Our doors are open all the time," he said. Delhi University's admission helpline received 120-130 calls daily

From parents filling up their details in their wards' admission forms to candidates mentioning wrong gender, Delhi University's admission helpline has had a busy time providing answers to queries from harried applicants and their parents. The helpline, which was made operational on May 7, has been handling 120-130 calls from students and parents on a daily basis, apart from helping colleges in solving various issues. A counsellor at the helpline said that many students reached out to them with the problem that their parents filled in their own details in the application forms. In a case, a young man had called the helpline saying that he had mentioned his gender while filling up his sister's form, thereby rendering her ineligible for admission to women's only colleges, said another counsellor. The helpline also get queries to which the counsellors don't have an answer to, they said. "This time, a candidate called us saying that she has filled her gender as 'others' but in six months' .

Over 40,000 school classrooms turn hi-tech in Kerala

Kerala schools are fast becoming digital with hi-tech classrooms equipped with advanced gadgets, including laptops and multi-media projectors, coming up in over 40,000 classrooms in the state. As part of the ambitious 'Hi-Tech school' project of the state government, the Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) has enabled 40,083 classrooms in selected state-run and aided schools to become hi-tech. KITE, formerly IT@School project under the state General Education Department, is a special purpose vehicle envisaged to promote IT education in state schools. K Anvar Sadath, vice chairman and executive director, KITE, said northern Malappuram district tops in the number of hi-tech classrooms (5,096), followed by neighbouring Kozhikode (4,105) and Thrissur district (3,497).
