CBSE to award 196 extra marks to Tamil NEET candidates

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) to award additional marks to students who wrote the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in the Tamil language in 2018.As per the ruling, four marks each will be awarded for each of the wrongly-translated 49 questions, following which a new ranking list will be put out in two weeks.In the meantime, the CBSE will suspend the medical counselling.49 questions were wrongly translated for students who wrote the NEET in the Tamil language in 2018, after which a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed regarding the same.Speaking on the issue, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader and MLA D Jayakumar said that the CBSE will decide the future course of action on the matter."Madurai high court has said the same thing. Kiran Shaw, KDA spar over govt proposal on english-medium

Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) engaged in a war of words after she called the latter an "insignificant group of naysayers" for opposing the Karnataka government's proposal to introduce English-medium classes in 1,000 primary schools of the state. "Media always portrays a small & insignificant group of naysayers as 'activists' - these r usually attention seeking trouble makers who don't care about education nor employment (sic)," Shaw said in a tweet on July 7, referring to the KDA's stand on the issue. High court revokes government order on fee hike

In a relief to students of Ayurvedic colleges in the state, the Uttarakhand High Court has revoked a state government order effecting a substantial hike in their fees. Denotifying the government order (GO) dated October 14, 2015 the single bench of justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said students who have already submitted feesas per the denotified GO be reimbursed within 15 days. The government order had increased the fees of Ayurvedic colleges from Rs 80,000 to Rs 2.15 lakh per year, prompting 104 students of the Himalayan Ayurvedic College to challenge the move, terming it as unconstitutional.

Ambedkar University announces first cut-off list

Ambedkar University announced its first cut-off list for undergraduate courses in the 2018-19 academic year today. The highest cut-off this year is 94.25 per cent for BA (Hons) in Psychology for students belonging to Delhi and general category whereas it is 98.25 per cent for others. The cut-off for students in the general category and belonging to Delhi for BA (Hons) in English is 92.50 per cent whereas for other students it is 97.50 per cent. In BA (Hons) Economics, the cut-off is 93.50 per cent for general category and Delhi residents. It is 96.75 per cent for others. The lowest cut-off is for BA in Sustainable Urbanism. For general category and Delhi residents, the cut-off is 75.50 per cent whereas for other students it is 89.50 per cent.

Principal, teacher of school arrested for forcing girls to

The principal and a teacher of a school here were arrested today following complaints by girl students that they were made to watch obscene videos and subjected to sexual exploitation, police said. Sub Divisional Officer (Sadar), Darbhanga, Rakesh Kumar said the principal and a teacher of a public school in Lal Bagh locality were arrested after an FIR was lodged at Town police station. The FIR was lodged on behalf of three students, whose guardians have alleged that the girls had accused the teacher of forcing them to watch obscene videos besides indulging in indecent behaviour and the principal paid no heed when the matter was raised before him. The SDO also said that the school has been sealed.

Maharashtra govt schools to get electricity at lower rates

The Maharashtra government has formulated a scheme for electrification ofschools in the state, Education Minister Vinod Tawde said today. Under the scheme, state-run schools will be provided electricity at government rates and the bill amount will be directly deposited in their accounts, he told the assembly. Tawde's statement came after Shashikant Shinde (NCP) raised the issue of lack of electricity in all digital schools through a calling attention noticein the lower house. The minister said the budgetary provision for school education includes funds for digital schools, educational material and computerisation, among others. Even though the responsibility for maintaining Zilla Parishad school buildings lies with the rural development ministry, the education department will join hands with it to conduct a structural audit of all schools in the state, he said. Microsoft signs MoU with Raj govt for digital training to 9,500 students

Microsoft today signed an MoU with the Rajasthan government to provide free digital training to 9,500 college students in one year. The initiative was taken for the enhancement of digital learning and capacity building of college students in the state, higher education minister Kiran Maheshwari said on the MoU signing. Today is time of technology and speed and those who are not updated will be outdated therefore the government has taken a new initiative to increase digital learning of college students, the minister said. Asst Prof alleges he was beaten by student

An associate professor in the department of economics at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) here today alleged he was "beaten up" by one of his students. The student, a PhD scholar, has been detained, a police official said. Assistant Professor L C Mallaiah while speaking to PTI alleged that at around 3.25 pm one of the PhD scholars hurled abuses and then beat him up. "The reason of the PhD student's anger was that an external examiner had asked him to revise the thesis for his PhD and resubmit it. He wanted to avoid the revision and resubmission process. This happened last month, when I was on leave during the summer vacations. Consider students' choice too when allotting streams in class XI: HC to Delhi govt

The Delhi High Court today asked the Delhi government to consider the interest of students too when allocating them various streams of courses in class XI in government schools here. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar asked the government to take into account the preferences or choices of the students after one of them told the court that she was given vocational stream even though she wanted to pursue Arts. The court gave the order, while hearing a plea for direction to the Directorate of Education (DoE) to forthwith grant admission to over 180 students who have been allegedly wrongly denied admissions in government schools. The DoE told the court that it was carrying out verification of the students whose names were provided to it by NGO Social Jurist, which had filed the PIL, and the process will take more time. Delhi govt school students' ability to read textbooks jumps by 15 pc

The learning ability of Delhi government school students has improved significantly over the past year, with a new report suggesting today that 63 per cent of children in classes 3-9 are now able read their textbooks. Only 48 per cent students in those classes were able to read their textbooks last year, according to the National Achievement Survey 2017 published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training. Following the NCERT survey, the AAP government in April this year launched the 'Mission Buniyaad' scheme with an aim to ensure that all children of classes 3-9 are able to read, write and solve basic mathematics problems. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia released the findings of the scheme today, which suggested that the ability of children in these classes to read their textbooks has improved. West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, who is also Chancellor of the Jadavpur University (JU), today expressed concern over the health of the students, who had been observing hunger strike over the past three days in protest against the institute's new admission procedure. In a statement issued by Raj Bhavan, the governor appealed to the students to withdraw their hunger strike and restore normalcy in the university.
