Kejriwal,Dalai Lama launch 'Happiness Curriculum' for Delhi govt schools
The Delhi government today launched 'Happiness Curriculum' for its school students, with the Dalai Lama gracing the occasion and saying that India can lead the world by uniting the modern and ancient knowledge and help it overcome "negative emotions" of the mankind. Launching the curriculum for students of nursery up to class 8, Delhi chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed the occasion "historical". Congratulating Delhi government for its initiative to include 'Happiness curriculum' in its schools, the Dalai Lama said "only India has the ability to combine modern education with ancient knowledge which is necessary for fulfilment of human emotions." He said such a combination will pave way for physical and mental well being, solving troubles caused due to negative and destructive emotions like anger, hatred and jealousy. Mamata pays surprise visit to Ashutosh College
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today paid a surprise visit to Ashutosh College in south Kolkata and warned of stern action against those who indulging in irregularities during the admission process of colleges. Asutosh College in Hazra area is barely a few meters away from Banerjee's residence. She also interacted with the students and leaders of students' union of the college. "I was into student politics. We used to help students in getting admissions. If some people are demanding money in lieu of admission then this is absolutely wrong. The government will take strong action against them and will not spare them," Banerjee said. SFI leader stabbed to death on college campus in Kerala
A SFI leader was stabbed to death and two others were injured in an attack allegedly by members of a pro-Islamic outfit at a college here, police said today. They were attacked allegedly by workers of the Campus Front and its parent outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) inside the Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, campus last night, they said. The condition of one of the injured students is said to be serious. Three workers of the PFI and the Campus Front have been taken into custody in connection with the incident, police said. The Students' Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M), has called for a state-wide protest today against the killing of Abhimanyu (20). The SFI leader, a second-year degree student at the college, was a resident of Vattavada in Idukki district and also a member of the organisation's Idukki district committee. 5 school children injured in bus accident in UP
At least five school children were injured after their bus overturned today on the Thanabhawan road here, police said. The children were students of the Nalanda Public School. The vehicle's driver was also hurt in the incident, they said. The injured have been admitted to a hospital here. Burari deaths: Saw them playing cricket last night, says friend of 2 minors
A friend of the two minor boys, who were among the 11 people found dead in north Delhi's Burari today, said he had seen them playing cricket last night. The 15-year-old boys were Class 9 students of Virendra Public School, their friend, Jatin, said. He said, "I saw them playing last night. Bhavnesh uncle was happy seeing them. It is hard to believe they are not here with us." Devesh Malik, one of the neighbours of the family, said their children were finding it hard to come to terms with what had happened. "Our children are scared. They are not able to gauge what has happened," he added. Ten of those dead were found hanging from an iron-mesh in the ceiling for ventilation, while the body of a 77-year-old woman was lying on the floor in another room of the house, the police said. US, Australian students enjoy heritage, museum walks
The 81st Ekamra Walks Old Town Circuit the fourth Museum Walk today attracted students from Australia and the USA as they participated in the two events besides the local people. Govt school head mistress booked for beating up students
A case has been registered against the headmistress of a government school in Bantwal near here for allegedly beating up class four children for not doing homework, police said today. The accused, Sharada beat up all children in the class on June 29 for not completing their homework. After one of the students came forward to lodge a complaint with the police, a case was registered at the Ullal police station yesterday, they said. Childline sources said the incident took place on June 29 when the teacher found that the children had not completed their homework and started beating them with a cane. The child who filed the complaint, was so shattered by the incident that he did not enter his home after returning from school, they added. According to a 'Sunday Times' analysis of the uniform policies of schools in England, at least 40 secondary schools have stopped girls from wearing skirts, while others are consulting on a ban. Academicians give thumbs down to Centre's move to scrap UGC
The Centre's decision to scrap the University Grants Commission (UGC) and bring in a new regulatory body in the higher education sector has not gone down well with academicians, who have questioned the move saying politicians should not be involved in academic matters. The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry had last week announced its decision to replace the UGC with the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) by repealing the UGC Act, 1951. According to a draft, which has been placed in the public domain by the ministry to seek feedback from the stakeholders, the new commission will solely focus on academic matters and monetary grants would be under the purview of the ministry. Discourage parents from using private vans to ferry children: Delhi govt tells schools
The Delhi government has directed all schools here to discourage parents from hiring private vans to ferry their wards, claiming that most of these vehicles operate illegally and pose a threat to safety of children. The government's directive to schools to sensitise parents on the issue comes after incidents in which the life of students was put in danger by private vehicles due to non-adherence of motor vehicles laws. "It is observed that for transportation of school children in Delhi primarily three modes of transport are being used-- vehicles owned by the educational institutions, vehicles hired by the educational institutions and vehicles hired by parents or guardians themselves," the Directorate of Education (DoE) said in a letter to schools. Police: Teacher, 70, offered 16-year-old girl iPhone for sex
Police say a 70-year-old Long Island math teacher gave two 16-year old students cash for nude or revealing photos and offered one of them a top-of-the-line iPhone if she'd have sex with him. Jairo Inswasty was charged Thursday with endangering the welfare of a child. He was immediately suspended from his teaching position at Central Islip High School. Suffolk County police said Inswasty paid one student $5 for a bikini photo and the other student USD 150 to pose for nude photos. Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart says Inswasty later offered the second student an iPhone X to have sex. She declined. No phone number was listed for Inswasty. Court records did not list a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. Inswasty's union did not immediately respond to a message.

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra today said that education can better the world and called upon students to acquire knowledge uprightly. "Nelson Mandela once said about education that it is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," Misra said at the foundation stone laying ceremony of National Law Institute in Jabalpur. 'Exemplary action against those meddling in college admission'
The West Bengal government will take "exemplary" action against anyone found to be involved in irregularities in admission to under-graduate courses, Higher Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said today. Chatterjee said that the education department would call college principals to a meeting next week to discuss a host of issues, including admission-related matters. Asked about media reports regarding some leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress' student wing being allegedly involved in malpractices in college admission, he said, "If such an allegation against any leader is found to be true, exemplary action will be taken against that person." The minister also asked students and guardians to directly lodge a complaint with the police, if they were approached by anyone offering help in the admission process in exchange for money.
