The Assam government today announced to bring in a rectifying Bill to solve the impasse in the Assam Women's University where students are agitating over the demand for a permanent vice-chancellor since March 5. "We are in the process to rectify this issue. We have to repeal the current Act and bring in a fresh Act. We are bringing in a rectifying Bill," Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in the Assembly. A section of students of Delhi University (DU) today staged a demonstration on the campus, demanding expulsion of the head of the Chemistry department over complaints of alleged sexual harassment against the professor. The professor denied the allegations as "baseless". He told PTI that it was part of efforts to ruin his professional life. "I had questioned (many) teachers for their absence. My colleagues have their aspirations and they are levelling baseless allegations. How can you run a department if they do not turn up to work. They do not inform about leaves, neither do they pick up calls," the professor said. "I have all documents pertaining to my questions put to the teachers. They want to create a situation like JNU. The letter that Tendulkar wrote to DM & District Collector (Office of Mumbai Suburban District, District Planning Committee), Deependra Singh Kushwah, is in possession of PTI. Two students of a government engineering college in Jabalpur district have gone missing after slipping into the deep water of the Narmada near here, police said. Police have deployed divers to search for them (in case they have drowned), said sub-inspector O P Dholpuri of Ghansor police station. Kshitij Pratap Singh (20) and Sidhant Singhai (20) were out for a picnic with six other students from the college. While bathing, Kshitij slipped into deep water, and Sidhant, who tried to help him, also went missing, the officer said.
The Jammu government today suspended 23 teachers here for their abysmal achievements, an official said. The step was taken by Director School Education Kashmir G N Itoo during a surprise inspection of government schools here. "Itoo has suspended the entire teaching staff of Government High School Rangtaing, Middle School Aalikadal and Middle school Rehbaab Sahib for their abysmal achievements in these schools," an official statement said. Itoo interacted with the students in these schools and enquired about the teaching and learning process. The Director also sought an explanation from the Zonal Education Officer Zaldagar for non-compliance of instructions regarding academic monitoring of schools falling in her zone. "There will be no compromise in quality of education and any teacher found neglecting duties shall face action under rules," Itoo said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today asked women to raise their voice against injustice and atrocities. The chief minister was speaking at an award function here. "The state government is committed towards the security and welfare of women and all necessary steps have been taken in this regard...women should not tolerate injustice and atrocities and raise their voice against it," Adityanath said. Opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu today termed the CBSE paper leak as "another pitfall" of centralised education and said that re-exam amounted to "injustice" against students and parents. "#CBSEPaperLeak is another example of the pitfalls of centralised education. Re-examination is nothing less than injustice for 28 lakh students and parents," DMK Working President M K Stalin tweeted. The re-examination "shatters our collective faith in our national education system," Stalin, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, said. NCERT published textbooks will carry QR codes from next year, which will provide web links to films or related reading content to help students understand subjects better, Union minister Prakash Javadekar said today. Quick Response (QR) Code is a machine-readable code consisting of an array of black and white squares, which are essentially web links that can be read by smartphone cameras. Javadekar also announced that students who take education loans will not have to pay the interest for the duration of the course plus one year. He said the government has made a provision of Rs 6,600 crore for bearing the interest component on the loans. Nearly 10 lakh students would avail the benefits from 2017-18 to 2019-20, with the government bearing about Rs 2,200 crore per year towards interest costs on education loans, the minister said.
